Thane's food has three strands that matter for a fat-loss or muscle-gain plan. There's misal, which the city treats as its own. There's the fish, rice and coconut cooking of the Agri and Koli communities, who were here long before the towers on Ghodbunder Road. And there's commuter food: whatever is quick at the station, in the office canteen or in the tiffin from home. This guide puts numbers on all three and shows how to build a day from them.

Ingredient values come from the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (IFCT, ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition) and cooked-dish values from the open Indian Nutrient Databank (INDB) and the FatSecret India database, each with its serving size. Where a Thane dish has no published analysis, we say so rather than guess.

Mamledar misal and Thane's misal habit, plate by plate

Thane's most famous plate is misal. The Free Press Journal reported in December 2020 that the Mamledar Misal brand was launched in Thane in 1946 as a 50 sq ft canteen near the Mamledar Kacheri, which gave it the name, and that it had grown to 14 outlets across Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. It is known for heat: customers choose light, medium or the spiciest “jhanjhanit” level. Chilli adds almost no calories; the oil that floats on the tarri, the farsan and the pav do.

No lab has published an analysis of any one Thane eatery's misal, so we use FatSecret's generic misal pav and add the parts separately. That lets you see what a full hotel plate costs.

Smarter plate: misal, extra usal, taak, no extra farsansum of the aboveabout 560 kcal23.8 g
What a misal plate in Thane adds up to (FatSecret India, INDB and IFCT 2017)

The smarter plate is about the same size and more filling, with less fried food and more protein, because matki (moth bean) is a pulse: IFCT lists it at 19.8 g of protein per 100 g raw. The calorie difference between the two plates is small; the real change is that you leave fuller and with a quarter more protein.

How to order misal in Thane for fat loss or muscle gain

  1. 1

Ask for farsan on the side

At about 545 kcal per 100 g, farsan is the densest thing on the plate. Add one spoon instead of a heap.

  2. 2

Order one pav, or ask for extra usal

Each pav is about 131 kcal of white bread. A second katori of usal gives almost twice the protein for a similar cost in calories.

  3. 3

    Skim the tarri

The red oil on top is the visible fat. Spoon some off before you mix, whatever spice level you chose.

  4. 4

    Add taak or dahi

A glass of taak adds about 5.7 g of protein and cools the jhanjhanit heat.

  5. 5

For muscle gain, keep the second pav

If you're eating to build muscle, the extra pav and usal are useful calories. Just pair the plate with eggs or fish later in the day.

Agri and Koli food in Thane: fish, shellfish and rice bhakri

Thane's oldest food culture comes from its fishing and farming communities. Wikipedia describes the Agri as a community of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts mainly involved in fishing, salt making and rice farming, and lists Thane Koliwada among the Koli fishing settlements of the region. That's why an Agri-Koli thali in Thane leans on rice bhakri, fish, prawns, crab and clams rather than wheat and paneer.

For anyone trying to eat more protein, this is the best news on the page. Shellfish and small fish are among the leanest protein foods in the IFCT tables.

Surmai, seer fish (Scomberomorus commerson)22.3 g136 kcal16.4 g
Kalwa, oyster (Crassostrea sp.)9.5 g60 kcal15.8 g
Paplet, white pomfret19.0 g123 kcal15.5 g
Agri-Koli seafood: protein and calories per 100 g raw (IFCT 2017)

For comparison, IFCT lists paneer at 6.2 g of protein per 100 kcal. Crab, prawns and bangda give more than three times that. The cooking decides the rest: a prawn curry with coconut is about 313 kcal and 24.4 g of protein per bowl in INDB, while a rava-coated, shallow-fried kolambi or bombil fry absorbs a lot of oil. Tawa-roasted or in a curry, seafood is the easiest way to reach 100 g of protein a day in Thane.

The staple on the side is usually rice bhakri. Made from 40 g of rice flour, one bhakri is about 143 kcal and 3.2 g of protein by our IFCT calculation, before any ghee. Jowar bhakri from the same 40 g of flour is about 134 kcal with 4.0 g of protein and more fibre, so it's worth asking for at places that make both.

Agri mutton and chicken rassa: what the oil and coconut add

Agri food is known for its spice and heat, and many recipes build the masala on dried coconut. Mutton and chicken rassa are Sunday food in many Thane homes. We couldn't find an analysed calorie value for Agri rassa, so here is what a published recipe tells you instead. Sanjeev Kapoor's Agri mutton rassa uses 750 g of bone-in mutton, 4 tablespoons of oil and a cup of grated dried coconut for four servings. That's about a tablespoon of oil per plate, roughly 135 kcal before the meat, plus a quarter cup of dried coconut, which IFCT lists at 63 g of fat per 100 g.

The meat itself is a good protein source: IFCT puts raw goat leg at about 22 g of protein per 100 g. To keep rassa in a fat-loss week, have one bowl with one or two bhakris, skim the oil that rises, and fill the rest of the plate with a dry bhaji. As a rough guide, INDB's standard chicken curry is about 320 kcal and 29 g of protein per bowl; a coconut-heavy Agri version will be higher.

Healthy food near Thane station and on the commute

Thane sits at the edge of vada pav country: one of the earliest vada pav kiosks, Khidki Vada Pav in Kalyan, dates to the late 1960s, according to Wikipedia's history of the dish. At station counters the choice is usually between fried snacks, and their numbers are close: a vada pav is about 304 kcal with 9 g of protein, a batata vada alone about 125 kcal, one sabudana vada about 99 kcal with only 1.4 g of protein, and one onion bhaji about 80 kcal (FatSecret).

  • Best of the station options: misal with one pav, or usal with a glass of chaas, for the protein from the pulses.
  • If it has to be fried: one vada pav rather than a plate of bhajis or two sabudana vadas, which have almost no protein.
  • Carry a backup: 30 g of roasted chana is about 86 kcal and 5.6 g of protein by IFCT values for whole Bengal gram, and it survives a crowded train.
  • Coming home late: if dinner will be after 9 PM, eat the chana on the platform so you're not starving and ordering the first thing on the app.

Healthy food options in Thane's townships, offices and tiffins

Much of Thane now lives in large complexes on Ghodbunder Road, in Hiranandani Estate and around Majiwada, and works in Wagle Estate or across the creek. That makes tiffin services, office canteens and food delivery the everyday reality. You can't see the kitchen, so judge the plate instead.

  • Look for 25–30 g of protein at lunch. A bowl of moong dal is about 7.4 g in INDB, a bowl of chicken curry 29.2 g. A tiffin that is all roti, rice and potato sabzi won't get you there.
  • Ask a healthy food delivery service in Thane for numbers. If a subscription can't tell you the calories and protein per meal, it's hard to plan around.
  • Keep the bhakri, swap the extra rice. One bhakri and a small katori of rice is a fuller plate than three helpings of rice.
  • Use dahi and chaas freely. INDB's cucumber raita is about 90 kcal with 6.2 g of protein per bowl.

A 1,800-calorie Thane day, with misal and seafood

This sample day keeps a misal lunch and an Agri-Koli dinner, and comes to about 1,830 kcal and 87 g of protein. It suits many men losing weight steadily and many active women; set your own target with the calorie deficit calculator.

Sample day of healthy Thane food, about 1,800 kcal

Thalipeeth uses the IFCT-calculated value from our Maharashtrian diet plan for weight loss (about 177 kcal and 5.8 g); the other values are from the tables above, INDB and IFCT. For muscle gain, add 2 boiled eggs at breakfast (about 148 kcal, 13.4 g) and a second bowl of usal at lunch. Our protein intake calculator gives your daily target; ICMR-NIN's allowance for healthy adults is 0.83 g per kg a day, and people who strength train usually need more.

ICMR-NIN's 2024 guidelines describe losing about half a kilogram a week as safe and ask adults to do muscle-strengthening exercise at least two days a week, so the muscle you have stays while the fat goes.
