Thane is a good city to own a bicycle in and a hard one to find a cycle lane in. It has hills on its doorstep, lakes in the middle and new townships with wide internal roads, but the main roads between them carry highway traffic. Here is what a rider in Thane can actually use, from municipal and news reports checked in October 2026.

Thane’s cycle track story: 82 km planned, 850 m built

Thane has been promising cyclists space for a long time. In June 2010, Down To Earth reported that the municipality had started marking out 82 km of cycle tracks along city roads and that the project had stalled. In 2022, the Free Press Journal reported that an earlier cycle track in Wagle Estate had failed through lack of maintenance and been taken over for parking. A local NGO founder quoted in that report said there was still no separate lane for cyclists in Thane.

The first dedicated lane that did get built is in Pawar Nagar, near Upvan. According to the same 2022 report, the Thane Municipal Corporation’s work order put its cost at ₹69.76 lakh, including three years of maintenance, for an 850 m track more than 3.5 m wide, made of a synthetic polymer with a coloured coating and signs, and barricaded so it can’t be used for parking. Officials said more lanes would follow. One cyclist quoted called a track of under 1 km a waste of money; another expected riders to use it well. Both views are fair: it is too short for training, but it is safe ground for a child or a nervous adult to learn on.

Cycling track in Thane: how to use the Upvan lane

Treat the Upvan track as a skills loop rather than a workout. Ride laps to practise braking, gear changes and looking over your shoulder without wobbling, which are the habits that keep you safe on Ghodbunder Road later. Upvan Lake, one of Thane’s biggest lakes at about 0.06 sq km and surrounded by the Yeoor Hills, is next door, so families can combine a lap session with a walk. For distance, you will have to leave the track.

Yeoor Hills: Thane’s climbing road

For real training, Thane riders head uphill. Yeoor Hills is part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a quiet green area popular for morning walks, with six villages and about 3,000 residents. Access is controlled by the Forest Department, and no vehicles are allowed in after 8 PM, which keeps the road calm in the early morning and evening. It is a forest with wildlife, and the park is known for its leopards, so ride in daylight, in pairs if you can, and keep your speed down on the descent where walkers share the road.

Yeoor is the best place in Thane for hill repeats: ride a steady climb hard for 3–5 minutes, roll back down easily and repeat four to six times. A session like that once a week builds more leg strength than an hour on the flat. It’s also the base for walking training, which our guide to treks near Thane covers.

Ghodbunder Road and Thane’s road-safety numbers

Plan the route, check conditions and prepare what you need before heading out.
Plan the route, check conditions and prepare what you need before heading out.

Ghodbunder Road is the spine of new Thane: about 14 km from Kapurbawdi to Ghodbunder village, joining the Eastern Express Highway at one end and the Western Express Highway at the other. It is also a construction site, with the elevated Metro Line 4 (planned at 32.32 km from Wadala to Kasarvadavali) built along it. That makes it the most useful road in Thane and one of the least pleasant to cycle on.

The district’s crash numbers explain the caution. Thane police data reported by the Free Press Journal in August 2026 counted 659 road deaths and 1,640 people grievously injured across Thane district from 2023 to 2025, an average of 17–18 deaths a month. The roads named include Ghodbunder Road, the Thane–Belapur Road, the Mumbai–Nashik Highway and the Mumbra Bypass, and the report followed the death of a disaster-response officer whose two-wheeler hit a pothole. For a cyclist, the lessons are simple:

  • Ride Ghodbunder Road only at first light and only if you’re confident in traffic; use the service roads where they exist.
  • Watch for potholes and Metro barricades, which can push you into the traffic lane without warning, especially after rain.
  • Front and rear lights, a helmet and bright clothing, even on a 6 AM ride.
  • Take the bike out of Thane in a car or on a weekend morning for long rides, rather than threading the highways at rush hour.

Bike share in Thane: three attempts

Thane has tried shared bicycles more than once. In 2010, Down To Earth reported that a private company ran the FreMo rent-a-bicycle scheme from five stations in the city, at ₹5 an hour or ₹1,500 a year for 300 hours, and had only four members at the time. In September 2017, Signpost India and the Thane Municipal Corporation announced the ILOVEYCYCLING scheme, planned at 600 bikes and 50 stations, with the first 45 minutes of each ride free. We couldn’t confirm in October 2026 whether any public bike-share scheme is still running in Thane, so check before you count on one for a station commute.

Cycling groups, events and classes in Thane

We couldn’t verify a regular car-free street event in Thane itself. The nearest documented one was Mumbai Police’s Sunday Street program, which in March 2022 closed Tansa Pipeline Road in Mulund, just across the city limit, to vehicles from 6 AM to 10 AM for cycling, skating and running. That pipeline is also the start of the 39 km Tansa track that the state approved in 2017. Thane’s cycling groups mostly organise weekend rides through Instagram and WhatsApp; ask at a local bike shop which group rides at your pace. If by “cycling classes” you mean indoor spin, a gym or an online group workout gives you the same fitness without the traffic.

Best months for cycling in Thane

For weather, the nearest long-term reference is the India Meteorological Department’s Santacruz station in Mumbai (normals for 1991–2020). It shows the pattern every Thane rider knows: a bone-dry winter and a monsoon that dumps about 2,390 mm between June and September.

A riding week that fits a Thane commute

Most Thane riders also commute into Mumbai or run a school timetable, so rides have to finish early. A week that works from November to May, using only the places on this page:

  • Tuesday, 6 AM: Yeoor hill repeats, 45–60 minutes including the ride to the gate.
  • Wednesday: strength session in your complex gym or at home, 45 minutes.
  • Thursday, 6 AM: an easy spin, with ten minutes of braking and cornering drills on the Upvan track if you are new.
  • Saturday: strength session, then rest.
  • Sunday, first light: the long ride, building by 15 minutes a week from 90 minutes, finished before traffic builds on Ghodbunder Road.

Strength and mobility for Thane riders

Yeoor’s climbs ask for strong legs and a stable trunk, and the drive or train ride into Mumbai leaves your hips and back stiff. Two sessions a week in your complex gym or at home cover both. For how cycling fits into losing weight, see the national guide to cycling for weight loss.

  • Bulgarian split squats, 3 × 8 each leg: single-leg strength for standing climbs at Yeoor.
  • Hip thrusts or glute bridges, 3 × 12: the glutes do the heavy lifting on a hill.
  • Dead bugs and side planks, 3 rounds: a steady trunk keeps power going into the pedals.
  • Couch stretch and child’s pose, 2 minutes each: for hips and a lower back that sit all day.
