Two food cities in one: Bhopal's Nawabi Old City and its poha mornings
Bhopal eats in two styles. The Old City, around Jama Masjid, keeps the Nawabi kitchen alive: India's official tourism site lists Bhopali gosht korma and seekh kebabs at Chatori Gali, haleem at iftar in Ramadan, paya soup, mawa baati, imarti and barfi rasmalai among the city's must-try foods, along with sulaimani chai, a salted tea it credits to Begum Sikander Jahan. The rest of the city starts the day like Indore, with poha and jalebi, and Bairagarh adds the Sindhi breakfast of dal pakwan.
For anyone trying to lose fat or build muscle, that mix is better news than it sounds. Grilled kebabs and meat curries are protein-dense. The problems are elsewhere: deep-fried breads, sweets soaked in syrup, and late dinners. India's national nutrition body, ICMR-NIN, sets the limits in its 2024 dietary guidelines: oil at 25–30 g and sugar at 20–25 g for a whole day, and 10–15% of energy from protein. A single Nawabi dinner of rich korma, extra bread and dessert can spend the full day's oil and sugar.
Calories and protein in Bhopal food: kebabs to rabri
Cooked dishes below are from INDB, the open Indian Nutrient Databank described by Vijayakumar and colleagues in 2024, whose 1,014 recipes are costed mainly against ICMR-NIN's composition tables. Raw meat is from IFCT 2017. INDB cooks like a careful home kitchen; an Old City degchi with more ghee will come out higher, so read every figure as a minimum.
| Dish | Portion | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mutton seekh kebab | 1 kebab | 60 | 5.1 |
| Mutton boti kebab | 1 piece | 73 | 5.0 |

Protein per 100 calories: how Bhopal's dishes compare
The most useful number for anyone eating out in Bhopal is not calories alone but protein per 100 kcal. It tells you how much of a dish works for your muscles and how much is just energy. Worked out from the values above:
| Food | Protein per 100 kcal | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Boiled egg | 9.8 g | Excellent; the cheapest high-protein add-on |
| Chicken curry | 9.1 g | Excellent, if the gravy isn't swimming in oil |
| Mutton seekh kebab | 8.4 g | Excellent; grilled on skewers, not fried |
| Mutton boti kebab | 6.9 g | Good |
| Chicken or mutton korma | 6.1–6.6 g | Good, but rich gravies push calories up fast |
| Chana dal | 4.2 g | Fair; the best vegetarian staple here |
| Mutton biryani | 3.9 g | Mostly rice: share it, add raita |
| Rabri or kulfi | 3.3–3.4 g | A dessert, whatever the milk content |
| Vegetable poha | 2.7 g | Light, but needs a protein side |
Chatori Gali and the Old City after dark: what to order
Chatori Gali, the Old City food lane that India's tourism site names for gosht korma and seekh kebabs, is the obvious place for a Nawabi dinner, and in Ramadan the Old City comes alive at iftar, when haleem is the dish people gather for. You don't need to skip it to stay on track. You need to order like someone with a plan:
| Instead of | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A plate of fried snacks while you wait | Two or three seekh kebabs with onion and lime | About 60 kcal and 5 g of protein per kebab |
| Korma with a pile of roti | Korma with one roti, and the bowl shared | A bowl of mutton korma is about 424 kcal before bread |
| Biryani for one | One plate of biryani for two, with raita and kebabs | A plate is about 396 kcal and only 15 g of protein |
| Barfi rasmalai, then mawa baati | One sweet, shared | Rabri alone is about 226 kcal a bowl |
| A second sulaimani chai with sugar | Water, or chaas | Saves sugar; chaas is about 80 kcal with 5.7 g of protein |
Poha-jalebi and dal pakwan: Bhopal's breakfasts, rebuilt
India's tourism site describes Bhopal's poha as flattened rice with mustard seeds, curry leaves and lemon, topped with sev, and served with jalebi. INDB's bowl of vegetable poha is 177 kcal and just 4.8 g of protein: light, but you'll be hungry by eleven. Two boiled eggs on the side (137 kcal, 13.4 g) or a katori of dahi fixes that; go light on the sev, and let jalebi be a Sunday thing.
Dal pakwan, the Sindhi breakfast found mainly in Bairagarh, is half a good idea. The dal is chana dal, about 291 kcal with 12.1 g of protein in a bowl. The pakwan is a deep-fried maida puri. Have the dal with a chapati, or one pakwan rather than two, and you keep most of the protein for far less oil.
Vegetarian protein in Bhopal
Plenty of Bhopal households skip the kebabs entirely, and that works too, as long as protein is planned rather than hoped for. ICMR-NIN's model day at 2,000 kcal builds in pulses (85 g), milk or curd (300 ml) and nuts and seeds (35 g), and its guidelines favour real food over powders for muscle. Put your weight into the protein intake calculator for a personal target.
- Dal at two meals: a bowl of chana dal gives about 12 g; whole moong with tadka about 7 g.
- Paneer most weeknights: a 75 g portion adds roughly 14 g of protein (around 229 kcal, IFCT 2017).
- Dahi with lunch, chaas in the afternoon: roughly 6 g and 5.7 g of protein respectively.
- Eggs, if you eat them: at 9.8 g of protein per 100 kcal, nothing else on this page beats them.

A 1,780 kcal Bhopal day, with kebabs for dinner
Built from the INDB and IFCT figures on this page, the day below totals roughly 1,780 kcal with 89 g of protein. Add raw kachumber at lunch and dinner as you like; it barely moves the total.
| When | Plate | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | A bowl of vegetable poha with 2 boiled eggs | 314 | 18.2 |
| Mid-morning | A tall glass of chaas | 80 | 5.7 |
| Lunch | 2 chapatis, chana dal, 150 g rice, cucumber raita | 703 | 26.4 |
| Evening | Sprouted moong salad and a guava (150 g) | 125 | 6.8 |
| Dinner | 3 mutton seekh kebabs, 2 chapatis, lauki raita | 412 | 25.5 |
| Bedtime | 200 ml cow's milk | 146 | 6.5 |
Vegetarian? Replace the kebabs with 75 g of paneer tikka, about 229 kcal and 14 g of protein by IFCT values, and the eggs with a bowl of raita: the day is about 1,780 kcal and 81 g. Cutting? Get a daily number from the calorie deficit calculator, then budget the Chatori Gali evening into the week rather than adding it on. Bulking? Two extra kebabs and more dal at lunch, plus steadily heavier lifting.
Healthy restaurants and food delivery in Bhopal: questions to ask
Diet tiffins, salad counters and cloud kitchens deliver all over the city, from MP Nagar offices to Kolar Road flats. We don't rate any of them. Ask these four things of any of them, or of your canteen:
- Grams of protein per meal? You want 20 or more at both main meals; chana dal with two rotis gets you to about 16.
- Grilled or fried? Ask how the chicken, paneer or kebabs are cooked. Tandoor and grill beat fried every time.
- How much oil and cream is in the gravy? A "healthy" korma is still a korma.
- Price per gram of protein? Eggs, dal and dahi from home are the benchmark to beat; pay more only for time saved.
