What online fitness coaching is
Online fitness coaching means a qualified coach plans and guides your training remotely, over an app, chat or a video call, instead of standing next to you in a gym. You still train in a real place: your living room, your building's clubhouse gym or the gym you already pay for. What changes is where the coach is.
People search for it under several names: online fitness coaching, online workout coaching, online gym coaching, virtual fitness coaching or an online personal trainer. They mostly mean the same thing, but the services behind those words are very different, and the difference decides what you actually get for your money.
The four types of online fitness coaching
Almost every online coaching service in India fits one of four types. The biggest question is whether a coach watches you while you train, or only reads what you report afterwards.
| Type | What you get | Does a coach watch you train? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| App or plan-based | A written program in an app, sometimes with a diet plan and logging | No | Experienced people who only need structure |
| Check-in coaching | A personalised plan, chat support and a weekly review; you may send videos of a few lifts | Afterwards, on recorded clips | Self-motivated people who already know the main lifts |
| Live one-to-one video coaching | A coach on a video call for the whole session, cueing every set as you do it | Yes, live | Beginners, people returning after a break, anyone who wants their form checked |
| Live group classes | A coach leads a small group on video in real time | Yes, shared across the group | Motivation, routine and a lower price per session |
MakeMyFitness does the last two: live one-to-one sessions and live group classes. Nothing is pre-recorded. If you mainly want a plan to follow on your own, an app is cheaper; if you want someone to see your squat and fix it on rep three, you need live coaching.
How online fitness coaching works, step by step
Live coaching is simpler than it sounds. This is how it works at MakeMyFitness, from the first message to week four.
- 1
Tell us your goal
Fill in the short booking form: what you want (fat loss, strength, muscle, mobility, getting back after an injury), any health conditions or injuries, and where you'll train. It takes about two minutes.
- 2
We call to confirm
Someone from the team calls you to understand your goal, answer questions and confirm a slot between 6 AM and 8 PM. You get a private Google Meet link.
- 3
Your first session is an assessment
The first 45 minutes are live and gentle on purpose: your coach checks how you move, asks about your history and sets the starting level. Read what happens in your first session.
- 4
Train live, three times a week
Prop your phone where the coach can see you. They plan every session around your equipment and cue your form, tempo and breathing in real time.
- 5
Review and adjust every week
Weights, reps, how you slept and how you feel are tracked, and the plan changes when they do. Food guidance comes from a coach who is a certified Human Performance Nutritionist.
Online gym coaching vs online home workout coaching
Online gym coaching means your coach joins you on video at a gym you already use. It suits people who have a membership but no plan, or who want heavier lifting with someone checking every set. Your coach builds sessions around the machines and weights your gym has and switches exercises when a rack is taken. See Personal Gym Training.
Online home workout coaching is the same live coaching in your own space, with whatever equipment you have, even if that's just a mat. It suits beginners, busy parents and anyone who doesn't want to commute to a gym. See Personal Home Training.
| At your gym | At home | |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | Racks, machines, heavier weights | Bodyweight, bands, dumbbells, whatever you own |
| Best for | Building strength and muscle, learning the big lifts | Starting out, fat loss, consistency, mobility |
| Set-up | Phone on a bench or a stand, earphones in | Phone or laptop at hip height, a mat's worth of floor |
| Price at MakeMyFitness | ₹799 a session, ₹7,070 for 12 | ₹899 a session, ₹8,080 for 12 |
Does online fitness coaching work?
For most healthy adults, yes, and the research points to supervision as the ingredient that matters. An exploratory meta-analysis by Fisher and colleagues (2022) compared supervised with unsupervised resistance training across 12 studies and found a moderate advantage for supervision on strength. A 2024 review of 34 trials in adults over 60, in Sports Medicine, found supervised exercise improved knee strength more than unsupervised exercise, with similar attendance.
Supervision doesn't have to be in the same room. A 2025 meta-analysis in Age and Ageing pooled 28 randomised trials (2,086 adults over 65) of exercise supervised live by videoconference: attendance averaged about 80%, and it improved physical function and muscle strength, about as effectively as other ways of delivering the same exercise in the higher-quality studies. A 2023 review of 11 trials found therapeutic exercise by video gave similar function, quality of life and satisfaction to face-to-face physiotherapy. That is the case for live video coaching over an app plan: you keep the supervision and lose the commute.
How much online fitness coaching costs in India
Prices depend mostly on the type. App plans and check-in coaching are priced per month because the coach's time per client is small. Live coaching is priced per session because a coach is with you for the whole workout. In-person trainers usually cost more again, because the trainer's travel and the gym's cut are part of the fee. Our personal trainer fees guide compares published estimates.
| Program | One session | 4-week plan (12 sessions) | Per session on the plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Gym Training1:1, 45 minutes | ₹799 | ₹7,070 | about ₹589 |
| Personal Home Training1:1, 45 minutes | ₹899 | ₹8,080 | about ₹673 |
| Rehab & Recovery1:1, once a doctor or physio has cleared you | ₹1,299 | ₹12,121 | about ₹1,010 |
| Group ClassesPer person, small group | ₹499 | ₹4,040 | about ₹337 |
So online gym coaching costs ₹7,070 for four weeks at three live sessions a week, and live home coaching ₹8,080. One-to-one sessions last 45 minutes. There is no joining fee, no contract and nothing that renews by itself. See the full pricing, or work out a month for your own schedule below.
Which program?
How many sessions a week?
Rupees for your month on 4-week plans
- 12 live sessions a month, about ₹673 each on a plan.
- ₹10,788 if you pay ₹899 per session instead.
- No subscription. A plan is 12 sessions to use within 6 weeks of the first, so at two a week it simply lasts longer.

Who online fitness coaching suits, and who it doesn't
- Suits: working professionals with unpredictable days (read more), beginners who feel self-conscious in a gym (read more), people with a gym membership but no plan, parents who can't leave the house, and Indians living abroad who want a coach who understands their food (read more).
- Suits, with clearance: people coming back from a back, knee or shoulder problem once a doctor or physiotherapist has cleared them to exercise, through Rehab & Recovery.
- Doesn't suit: anyone who needs hands-on spotting for maximal lifts, anyone straight out of surgery, and anyone without a stable internet connection for 45 minutes.
Online fitness coaching for women
Many women prefer training at home with a coach on video to a crowded gym floor, and online coaching makes that easy. You choose the camera angle and what's in frame, and you can turn the camera off for a moment whenever you like. Our lead coach is male; we say so plainly because many people ask. Read our guide to online personal training for women and strength training for women over 40.
How to choose an online fitness coach
- 1
Ask whether it's live
Many services sold as personal training are an app plan with chat. If you want form correction, confirm that a coach is on video for the whole session.
- 2
Check the credentials
Ask which certification the coach holds and who issued it. Our lead coach, Kumar Abhishek, holds a Diploma in Personal Training and is a Human Performance Nutritionist, both from K11 School of Fitness Sciences.
- 3
Look for an assessment first
A good coach asks about your goal, history, injuries and health before they plan anything.
- 4
Know the real price
Divide a monthly price by the number of live sessions it includes. Ask about joining fees, lock-ins and auto-renewal.
- 5
Try one session
Judge the coaching on the real thing, not a sales call.

Online fitness coaching in your city
Coaching on video works the same everywhere, but your city changes the plan: the commute, the heat or the monsoon, the gyms nearby and the food on your plate. Find your city for local trainer and gym costs, running tracks, races, treks and food, from Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi to Lucknow, Coimbatore and Guwahati.
