Trekking places near Thane, sorted by railhead
Thane has a head start on Mumbai for trekking. The Central line runs north-east from here to Kalyan, then splits towards Kasara, so the Kasara-line treks start from your own station instead of a trip back into Mumbai. Yeoor Hills sits inside the city. The table orders six treks from the easiest to the hardest, with heights from Wikipedia and access details from published trek guides (checked October 2026).
| Trek | Height | Start point | How to get there from Thane |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yeoor Hills | Forest hills, no single summit | Yeoor road, inside Thane city | By road or rickshaw within Thane |
| Tandulwadi Fort | Sources give 1,524 ft or 579 m | Tandulwadi village, about 7.5 km from Saphale station | About 75 km; Western line to Saphale |
| Malanggad | About 3,200 ft | Base village near Kalyan, about 15 km from Kalyan East | Central line to Kalyan, then road |
| Gorakhgad | 649 m | Dehri village, about 24 km from Murbad | Kalyan, bus to Murbad, then bus or shared jeep |
| Mahuli | 2,815 ft | Base near Shahapur | Kasara-line local to Asangaon |
| Kalsubai | 1,646 m | Bari village | Kasara-line local to Kasara, then about 51 km by shared taxi |
Yeoor Hills: the easy trek near Thane for weekday mornings
Yeoor Hills is the part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park that lies inside Thane city. Wikipedia describes it as a popular place for morning walks, with six villages and about 3,000 residents, and access controlled by the Forest Department; no vehicles are allowed in after 8 PM. It doesn’t have a famous summit, which is the point: you can walk uphill for an hour before work without a train ticket.
Use Yeoor as your training ground for everything else on this page. A steady uphill walk there once or twice a week, building from 45 minutes to two hours, does more for a Kalsubai climb than any gym machine. In the monsoon, keep to the road and stay away from the streams: Yeoor’s waterfalls were among the places named in the Thane collector’s 2021 order restricting visitors.
Small treks near Thane: Malanggad and Gorakhgad
For a first fort, Thane’s best options are both reached through Kalyan. Malanggad stands at about 3,200 ft in the Matheran range, around 15 km from Kalyan East according to Wikipedia. Its lowest level is a plateau holding the dargah of the Sufi saint Haji Malang, with the fort’s upper levels above it.
Gorakhgad (649 m) is smaller but steeper. Wikipedia places it about 24 km from Murbad, with Dehri as the base village, a cave with square pillars, rock-cut cisterns that hold water all year and a Mahadev temple on top. TrekUp India, a trek operator, says the climb from the Shiva temple at the base takes about 1.5–2.5 hours, with steep rock sections fitted with hooks, and recommends getting to Kalyan, taking a bus to Murbad and then a bus or shared vehicle to Dehri. It also warns that only the water in one of the summit tanks is safe to drink, so carry your own.
Mahuli: the trekking fort with Thane district’s highest point
Mahuli, near Shahapur, is the highest point in Thane district at 2,815 ft, about 75 km north-east of Mumbai. Asangaon on the Kasara line is the nearest station. The forest around it falls under the Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, and its pinnacles, Vazir and Vishnu, draw rock climbers; those are roped climbs, not part of the walking route. We couldn’t find a reliable published trail length or time for the main Mahuli trek, so plan a full day and go with someone who has done it. The base of Mahuli fort was also named in the 2021 collector’s order, which tells you it is one of the places the district watches in the rains.
Kalsubai from Thane: Maharashtra’s highest peak in a day
Kalsubai, at 1,646 m, is the highest peak in Maharashtra and the big goal for most Thane trekkers. It sits in the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, with the farming village of Bari as the start. Wikipedia lists the round trip at 13.2 km with about 820 m of elevation gain and rates it a moderate one-day hike. That gain is the number to train for: it is roughly the same as climbing the stairs of a 270-storey building.
- Getting there: TrekUp India suggests a local train to Kasara and then a shared taxi to Bari, about 51 km and 1 hour 45 minutes, at roughly ₹2,600–3,000 for the vehicle split between 6–9 people. Express trains to Igatpuri are the other option. From Thane, the Kasara local saves you the trip into Dadar.
- The ladders: iron ladders and steel steps help on the steep upper section. TrekUp warns they are slippery in the monsoon and that the final climb can unsettle anyone with vertigo.
- When to go: the same operator recommends November to April, especially for sunrise night treks, and suggests avoiding July to September, when crowds of 2,000–3,000 people, poor visibility and slippery trails make the climb slow and risky.
Tandulwadi: a Western line fort for a cool morning
Tandulwadi, in Palghar district, is the odd one out: it is reached from Saphale on the Western line rather than from the Central line, so from Thane it is more of a journey (about 75 km) than its modest height suggests. Wikipedia puts the base about 7.5 km from Saphale station and describes about 30 minutes from Tandulwadi village to the main plateau, then roughly another hour to the highest point. The reward is a view over the confluence of the Surya and Vaitarna rivers, plus rock-cut cisterns on top. The Lalthane waterfall below the fort fills up in the rains, which is exactly when to keep away from it.
Best trek near Thane for your first season: a sensible order
If you are new to trekking, the six treks above make a ladder you can climb over one dry season, from October to February. Each step adds either height, rock or distance, never all three at once:
- Yeoor Hills, every week: builds the habit and the legs with no travel at all.
- Tandulwadi or Malanggad: your first fort, with a short climb and a long view.
- Gorakhgad: your first real rock steps, with fixed hooks and a 1.5–2.5 hour climb.
- Mahuli: a full day on the highest ground in Thane district.
- Kalsubai: about 820 m of climbing and iron ladders, once the others feel easy.
Monsoon treks near Thane: rain and district orders
Thane’s hills get the full force of the Konkan monsoon. The nearest long-term India Meteorological Department normals, for Mumbai’s Santacruz station (1991–2020), show about 920 mm of rain in July alone and roughly 2,390 mm from June to September. Forest trails turn to streams, ladders get slick and fog hides the edges.
The Thane district administration restricts visitors at risky spots in most rainy seasons. The 2021 order by Collector Rajesh Narvekar, reported by Treks and Trails India, named the base of Mahuli fort, the Bhatsa dam site in Shahapur taluka, the Yeoor waterfalls, all waterfalls at Kasara and the Ashok waterfall in Ambernath. Orders are now issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the lists change every year, so read the current one before booking a monsoon trek near Thane.
An 8-week plan for Kalsubai’s 820 m climb
Kalsubai is the hardest climb on this list, so train for it and everything else follows. The plan below assumes you can walk for an hour today. It uses three sessions a week: one at home or in your complex gym, one on stairs and one weekend walk, building to a full rehearsal on Gorakhgad or Malanggad. The national guide to preparing for a trek explains why each piece matters.
| Weeks | Strength (home or complex gym) | Stairs | Weekend |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Squats, step-ups and glute bridges, 3 × 12 each | 15 minutes up and down your tower’s stairs | 1-hour uphill walk at Yeoor |
| 3–4 | Add reverse lunges and single-leg calf raises, 3 × 10 | 20–25 minutes with a 4 kg backpack | 2 hours at Yeoor with the backpack |
| 5–6 | Step-ups holding dumbbells or water cans, 3 × 10 each leg | 30 minutes with 5–6 kg | Malanggad or Tandulwadi |
| 7 | Lighter sets, add balance work on one leg | 20 minutes, no load | Gorakhgad as the rehearsal |
| 8 | Two short sessions only | Rest | Kalsubai, starting at first light |
