Thane marathon 2026: the races that ran, and the next one
Thane’s race calendar has two anchors at opposite ends of the weather. The Mayor’s Varsha Marathon (‘varsha’ means rain) is the Thane Municipal Corporation’s own race, run on city roads in August with the monsoon still falling. The Thane Half Marathon comes in February, in Thane’s driest weeks. On 27 October 2026, the first has already run this year and the second has opened registration for its next edition.
| Race | Usual month | Distances | 2026 edition / next edition |

Thane Varsha Marathon: the municipal corporation’s monsoon race
The Varsha Marathon is organised by the Thane Municipal Corporation with the Thane District Athletics Association. It stopped after 2019 and came back on 10 August 2025 as the 31st edition, which drew more than 25,000 participants across 12 categories. The 32nd edition, under the Mayor’s Varsha Marathon name, ran on Sunday 30 August 2026. TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao said more than 30,000 runners had registered. The races were flagged off early in the morning near the TMC headquarters, and runners finished on rain-soaked roads.
It is a different kind of race from a city marathon run by a private organiser. The headline events are a 21 km race and a 10 km run, there are age-group races for children and seniors, and the prizes are serious. The 2025 edition, as announced by the corporation, had these categories:
| Level | Category | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| State | Open group, men and women | 21 km |
| State | Over 18, men and women | 10 km |
| State | Under 18, boys and girls | 10 km |
| District | Under 15, boys and girls | 5 km |
| District | Under 12, boys and girls | 3 km |
| District | Senior citizens, men and women | 500 m |
Total prize money in 2025 was ₹10,38,900, with ₹1 lakh to the winner of each main group and prizes for the top 10. Check the 2027 categories when the corporation announces them, because they can change from year to year.
Thane marathon route map and registration
We couldn’t find an official route map for the 2026 race. The best public clue is the traffic plan: the Free Press Journal reported diversions around Nitin Company Junction, Almeida Signal and Kamgar Nagar Naka, which places the course on the main roads of central Thane West. In 2025 the race was announced on 11 July for a 10 August date, about a month ahead, so watch the Thane Municipal Corporation’s announcements and local news from June onwards.
Union Bank of India Thane Half Marathon, 7 February 2027
The Thane Half Marathon is organised by Striders, with Union Bank of India as title sponsor. Its official site lists the 13th edition on Sunday 7 February 2027, and registration has opened. There are three categories: a timed 21 km half marathon, a timed 10 km Challenge Run and a non-timed 4 km Family Run. The site describes the venue only as Thane and hasn’t published the route or cut-off times yet, so check them before race week.
- Registration: online only, by UPI, card or net banking. There is no offline or race-day entry.
- Minimum age: 18, according to the race FAQs.
- Discounts: the FAQs offer 12.5% off until 10 January and 10% off from 11 to 20 January. The FAQ page still refers to the previous edition, so confirm the dates for 2027 at checkout.
- No changes or refunds: you can’t change category, transfer or cancel your entry once registered.
- Timing: every runner gets a timing chip, and the organisers say the timing certificate can be used to qualify for major Indian marathons, subject to each race’s own criteria.
Hiranandani, Dosti and the other half marathons people search for
Searches for a half marathon in Thane often add a sponsor’s name, such as Hiranandani, Dosti or Bajaj. Sponsors of Thane races change, and an older edition may now run under a different name. We couldn’t confirm a 2026–27 edition of a separate Hiranandani or Dosti half marathon from an organiser’s own site, so treat any listing for them with care. The safest way to check a Thane race is to find the organiser’s own page and confirm the date, the distance certification and the refund rules before you pay.
Running the Tata Mumbai Marathon from Thane
Thane has no full marathon of its own on this list, so for 42.2 km Thane runners look to the Tata Mumbai Marathon, held on the third Sunday of January. The 2027 edition is on 17 January, and the marathon start waves at CSMT begin at 5 AM, with the start line closing at 5:30 AM. That is the real challenge from Thane: you need a plan to reach south Mumbai well before dawn. Marathon entries close on 5 November 2026; half marathon entries closed in August. Our guide to marathons in Mumbai covers the TMM in full.
Race weather in Thane: a wet August and a dry February
Thane’s two races sit at opposite ends of its climate. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 give August, the Varsha Marathon month, an average high of 30.4 °C, a low of 25.0 °C and about 540 mm of rain. February, the Thane Half month, has a high of 33.9 °C, a low of 20.6 °C and about 1 mm of rain. Humidity in Thane ranges from 61% to 86%.
- For the Varsha Marathon: your peak training falls in July, the wettest month at about 922 mm. Do some long runs in the rain, test shoes and socks on wet roads, and use anti-chafe balm. On race day, watch your footing on painted road markings and manhole covers.
- For the February half: the build runs through December and January, when lows of about 20 °C make early mornings comfortable. By 8 AM on race day the temperature climbs fast, so start steady and drink at every station.
A Thane training week for the February half marathon
For the 7 February 2027 race, a 12-week build starts in mid-November. This sample week is for someone eight to ten weeks out who already runs about 20 km a week. It uses Thane’s lakes for easy running, the Yeoor road for hills and two strength sessions. Our guide to running tracks in Thane covers each place, and the half marathon training plan for beginners gives the full 12 weeks.
| Day | Session | Where in Thane |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Strength 1: squats, Romanian deadlifts, calf raises, planks (45 minutes) | Home or your complex gym |
| Tuesday | Easy run, 5–6 km, plus 4 × 20-second strides | Laps of Masunda or Kachrali Lake |
| Wednesday | Hills: 6–8 × 90-second climbs, jog back down | The road from Upvan into Yeoor, in daylight |
| Thursday | Strength 2: step-ups, split squats, single-leg work, core (45 minutes) | Home or your complex gym |
| Friday | Rest or 30 minutes’ walk | Anywhere |
| Saturday | Easy run, 5 km | Upvan Lake |
| Sunday | Long run, building from 10 km to 16–18 km, finished by 8 AM | Lake laps linked by quiet roads, or Upvan to Yeoor and back |
Lake laps make long runs repetitive, so split a long Sunday run into two or three lakes joined by early-morning roads. Leave a bottle at your start lake and drink each time you pass it. If you want measured intervals, ask at Dadoji Kondadev Stadium about access to its 400 m track; otherwise run timed efforts, such as 5 × 3 minutes hard, around a lake. Our national guide to strength training for runners explains what to lift on the two strength days.
Taper, race week and Thane food
In the last ten to fourteen days, cut your running distance, keep a few short quick efforts and make the last strength session light. The half marathon training plan for beginners sets out the taper week by week. Collect your bib early, and walk or drive the start area if the organisers publish it, so race morning holds no surprises.
Thane’s home cooking is mostly Maharashtrian, which makes race-week eating simple. In the last two days, eat plenty of familiar carbohydrates: poha, upma, varan bhaat, chapati and bananas. Keep misal, vada pav and other deep-fried or very spicy snacks for after the race. On race morning, eat a breakfast you tested before your long runs, about two hours before the start. Our Maharashtrian diet plan and the protein intake calculator help you plan meals for the whole training block, and our guide to healthy food in Thane covers local dishes.
