Bhopal's public bike share: what it is and where it stands in 2026
Bhopal was early. In June 2017 it launched what WRI India describes as the country's only fully automated public bicycle sharing system with segregated bike lanes: 500 bicycles, 60 docking stations and 11 km of dedicated lanes, with plans for a network of more than 50 km. More than 25,000 people registered in the first five months, over half of them women. WRI helped the municipal corporation plan the stations around housing, offices and the BRTS bus corridor.
Eight years on, the reports are mixed. In July 2025, The Hitavada counted 72 cycle stations, 500 regular bicycles and 75 e-cycles, with fares of ₹5 for half an hour or ₹10 an hour on regular bicycles, and ₹20 for the first 15 minutes then ₹1 a minute on e-cycles. It reported plans for stands at 17–18 Bhopal Metro stations, but also rising vandalism, especially around Boat Club, Misrod, Narmadapuram Road, Baanganga, Bhadbhada Road and VIP Road. In September 2025 the same paper reported about 1,000 rides a day and over 40,000 registrations since launch, but said the operator's contract with the Smart City corporation was due to end in November 2025, with no extension agreed.
| Date | Bicycles | Stations | Other figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 2017 (launch) | 500 | 60 | 11 km of dedicated lanes; 25,000+ users in five months |
| July 2025 | 500 regular and 75 e-cycles | 72 | ₹5 per half hour or ₹10 an hour; e-cycles ₹20 for 15 minutes, then ₹1 a minute |
| September 2025 | 500 | 55 | About 1,000 rides a day; 40,000+ registrations; contract due to end November 2025 |
Bhopal's cycle tracks: the BRTS lane from RRL Tiraha to Misrod
The longest cycle track in Bhopal runs about 12 km between RRL Tiraha and Misrod, built alongside the BRTS corridor for ₹4.81 crore, with another ₹1.40 crore later spent on red paint and bollards, according to The Hitavada in September 2025. The same report described it as poorly maintained, encroached on by vendors and blocked in places by construction material and animals. Treat it as useful in parts rather than as a continuous training lane: ride it at commuting speed, watch for obstacles and expect to rejoin the road.
Cycling in Van Vihar, Bhopal
Van Vihar National Park is Bhopal's nicest place to ride slowly. Declared a national park in 1979, it covers 445.21 hectares on the banks of the Upper Lake (Bada Talab), about 6 km from Bhopal railway station, and is run as a zoological park with a road through it. Madhya Pradesh Tourism recommends mornings for walks and cycling and lists October to March as the best season. The park is closed on Fridays.
Visitor guides quote different gate fees for entry and for bringing or hiring a cycle, so check at the gate rather than trusting a figure online. Van Vihar is for easy riding: animals in enclosures, families on foot and a speed that suits a child on a first bicycle. It's a good place to start riding again, not a place for intervals.
Lake roads and the Kerwa–Kaliasot loop: beautiful, and shared with tigers
Bhopal's best road riding is around its lakes and out to the forests south of the city. The Upper Lake, with a surface area of about 36 km², gives the city its long lakeside roads, and the roads toward Kerwa and Kaliyasot dams lead quickly into forest. That forest is wild: a February 2024 report in The Hitavada described the Kaliyasot–Kerwa forest complex as home to around a dozen tigers and a similar number of crocodiles, with caution signs along the road warning that tigers may be seen.
- Ride the forest roads in full daylight, and finish well before dusk.
- Ride in a group on the Kerwa and Kaliyasot stretches, and don't stop at forest edges for long breaks.
- Never leave the road for the dam edges, where crocodiles bask.
- On lake roads, watch for parked cars opening doors and walkers stepping off the footpath.
Cycling clubs and events in Bhopal
Bhopal's cycling calendar is a mix of long-distance brevets, open-street mornings and occasional community rides. These are the ones with a public record:
| Event or group | What it is | Latest date we found | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bhopal Randonneurs | 200 km brevet ("Dodi–Hotel Palash via Bhouri"), 6 AM start from Hotel Palash Residency near New Market; ₹500 entry | 11 January 2026 | Audax India Randonneurs |
| Sundays on Cycle, SAI regional centre | Community ride from the SAI CRC Bhopal campus with over 100 riders | 5 July 2026 | The Tribune |
| Raahgiri Day | Car-free Sunday mornings on Boat Club Road by the Upper Lake; over 10,000 people on day one | Launched 21 September 2014 | Sustainable Cities Collective |
A brevet is not a race. You ride a set route through checkpoints within a time limit, self-supported, and you finish with a validated time rather than a position. If 200 km is a long way off, ride with a local group first, build up to 60–80 km on the lake and dam roads, and read the Audax India rules before you enter. For shorter rides, ask at the city's bicycle shops about weekend group rides.
When to cycle in Bhopal: the weather in numbers
Bhopal is a good cycling city for about five months. India Meteorological Department-based normals for 1991–2020 put January at 24.9 °C by day and 10.6 °C at night, and May at 41.1 °C and 26.6 °C. The monsoon is heavy: July averages 368 mm of rain over about 14 rainy days, with only 3.5 hours of sunshine a day, and August is almost as wet.
| Months | Average high / low | Rainy days a month | Riding advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov–Feb | 24.9–29.9 °C / 10.6–15.0 °C | Under 1 | Best season; arm warmers for dawn starts in Dec–Jan |
| Mar | 33.9 °C / 17.6 °C | Under 1 | Start by 6:30 AM, home by 9 |
| Apr–May | 38.7–41.1 °C / 22.4–26.6 °C | About 1 | Short dawn rides only; two bottles |
| Jun–Sep | 28.9–37.4 °C / 22.2–26.0 °C | 7–14 | Wet roads, low light; lights on in the day |
| Oct | 32.7 °C / 19.1 °C | About 2 | Season restarts; build distance |
Back on a bicycle in Bhopal: a month from Van Vihar to the dam roads
Plenty of people in Bhopal last rode a bicycle at school. The city makes the return easy, because it has a safe place to start (Van Vihar), an easy place to build (the lake roads early on a Sunday) and a goal that feels like real cycling (the ride out toward Kerwa with a group). Spread over four weeks in the cool season, it looks like this:
| Week | Where to ride | How long | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Van Vihar, on a weekday morning (not Friday) | 30–40 minutes, twice | Braking, gears and looking over your shoulder |
| 2 | Upper Lake roads at first light on Sunday, plus Van Vihar midweek | 45 minutes, then 60 | Holding a straight line in traffic; signalling |
| 3 | Lake roads, with two 5-minute faster efforts | 60–75 minutes | Drinking every 15 minutes; a steady cadence |
| 4 | Toward Kerwa with a group, in full daylight | About 2 hours | Riding in a line, pacing the climbs, being home before the heat |
Add the strength sessions below from week two. If you're using a bike-share cycle in week one, check it's still running in your area, then move to your own bicycle for the longer rides: a shared commuter bike is fine for Van Vihar but heavy for two hours on the dam roads.
Strength and mobility for Bhopal riders
Riding builds your heart and lungs but works the hips through only part of their range and puts little load through your bones. Long rides on the dam roads also tire the lower back. Two short strength sessions a week cover the gaps. Our national guide to cycling for weight loss explains how riding fits a fat-loss plan; these four movements matter most:
- 1
Romanian deadlifts, 3 × 8
Hamstrings and back that hold your riding position for hours.
- 2
Step-ups, 3 × 10 each leg
Single-leg strength for climbs out of the lake basin.
- 3
Bird dogs, 3 × 10 each side
Trains the trunk to stay steady while the legs work.
- 4
Hip flexor and chest stretches, 2 × 45 seconds
Opens up the hunched position after a long ride.
