How much is gym fees in Chennai? The range by type
Chennai's gym prices start at zero, because the city has a real free tier. The Greater Chennai Corporation runs gyms that charge nothing, while premium clubs in the city's malls charge several thousand rupees a month. This table sets out each type; chain prices were checked on 27 October 2026.
| Kind of gym | What you pay | Monthly equivalent | Where the figure is from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greater Chennai Corporation gym | Nothing | ₹0 | DT Next |
| EmpowHer women-only Corporation gym | Nothing (women over 18, Aadhaar copy) | ₹0 | DT Next, July 2025 |
| Local independent gym | ₹1,500–2,500 a month | ₹1,500–2,500 | magicpin estimate, 2026 |
| Typical mid-range gym | ₹2,500–4,000 a month | ₹2,500–4,000 | magicpin estimate, 2026 |
| Gold's Gym, yearly plan | ₹17,798–₹40,043 a year incl. GST | roughly ₹1,480–3,340 | Gold's Gym branch pages |
| Cult ELITE pass | ₹7,344 a month, or ₹17,250 a year | ₹1,438–7,344 | cult.fit |
| Fitness First (mall clubs) | ₹4,000–6,000 a month | ₹4,000–6,000 | magicpin estimate, 2026 |
The average gym fees in Chennai per month depend on whose average you use. magicpin's Chennai guide says most mid-range gyms charge ₹2,500–4,000 a month and basic local gyms start around ₹1,500. Published chain prices can come in lower on long plans, as the Gold's and Cult sections below show.
Free Corporation gyms in Chennai
Chennai's municipal gyms are genuinely free. In 2016, DT Next reported that the Corporation ran 96 gyms, that it charged nothing to use them, and that 22 of them had newer equipment such as multi-station machines and treadmills. There was no personal trainer at any of them, and officials said up to 100 people used each one in the mornings. We couldn't find a newer full count.
A neighbourhood example: the Corporation gym off Kamarajar Salai in R. A. Puram, opposite Darmambal Park, was renovated in 2020 with new equipment, large mirrors and outdoor pull-up bars, using about ₹5 lakh from the Mylapore MLA's constituency fund, Mylapore Times reported. It's maintained by the ward 173 unit and was open from 5 to 10 AM and 5 to 10 PM.
A free gym with no trainer works best with a plan. Personal gym training in Chennai can supply one: a coach on video sets each session around the machines available. Check with the gym's caretaker that phones on a stand are allowed before you book.
Gym fees in Chennai for ladies
Chennai's free women-only option is EmpowHer, a network of gyms launched by the Greater Chennai Corporation in 2024. According to a DT Next report from July 2025, women over 18 can join by submitting a copy of their Aadhaar card; the gyms open from 6 to 10 AM and 4 to 8 PM and have lockers, a restroom and a changing room. Reporters found around 60 women, aged 21 to 63, using three of them daily: on West Jones Road in Saidapet, at Shivan Park in KK Nagar and in Raghav Colony, Ashok Nagar.
A GCC official told DT Next the plan is a women's gym in every ward, with 39 being built in the first phase (10 complete and 29 nearing completion at the time) and certified female trainers being recruited. One member quoted in the same report said private gyms nearby charged ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 for three months.
Among private gyms, UrbanPro lists Pink Fitness, a women's gym in Saligramam, with fees from ₹3,500 to ₹28,000 depending on the plan. Most chains in Chennai, including Gold's Gym and Cult, are mixed gyms; ask about women's changing rooms, lockers and quieter hours when you visit.
Gold's Gym in Chennai: Kotturpuram vs Adyar
Gold's Gym publishes annual prices for two Chennai branches, Kotturpuram and Adyar, and the gap between them is striking: Adyar costs more than twice as much for the same 12 months. Both pages add a ₹1,000 enrolment fee and 5% GST at checkout.
| Branch | Yearly fee | Payable with enrolment and GST | Monthly equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kotturpuram | ₹15,950 | ₹17,798 | roughly ₹1,480 |
| Adyar | ₹37,136 | ₹40,043 | roughly ₹3,340 |
magicpin estimates Gold's Gym in Chennai at ₹3,000–5,000 a month. Adyar's annual plan falls inside that range; Kotturpuram's falls well below it. The branch pages don't explain the difference, so compare floor space, equipment and timings at both before deciding, and ask whether either sells a monthly plan if you don't want to commit for a year.
Cult gym fees in Chennai, and the other chains
Cult.fit's Chennai centres include Velachery, Sholinganallur, Nungambakkam, Alwarpet, Anna Nagar, Adyar, Ramapuram and T. Nagar. Its Velachery page, checked on 27 October 2026, priced the city-wide cultpass ELITE at ₹7,344 for one month and ₹17,250 for twelve (₹1,438 a month), with three- and six-month passes at ₹10,390 and ₹14,050 and a 24-month pass at ₹28,750. Passes of three months or longer include pause days and two one-to-one trainer sessions.
For other chains, Chennai's only published figures we found are magicpin's estimates (2026): Talwalkars ₹2,500–4,000 a month, with branches it names in Nungambakkam, Velachery and Porur; Snap Fitness ₹2,200–3,800, in Anna Nagar and T. Nagar; Anytime Fitness ₹3,000–4,500, in Adyar and Velachery; and Fitness First ₹4,000–6,000 at Express Avenue and Phoenix Marketcity. These are a deals platform's estimates, not the chains' own prices.
Slam gym fees in Chennai are a frequent search, but we couldn't find prices published by Slam Lifestyle and Fitness for any Chennai branch. If you're comparing gym fees in Anna Nagar, the chains above with a branch there include Cult (city-wide pass prices) and, per magicpin, Snap Fitness.
Open gyms and 24-hour gyms in Chennai
People searching for an open gym in Chennai usually mean one of two things. If it's an open-to-all public gym, the Corporation gyms above are the answer, and some, like the R. A. Puram gym, have pull-up bars outside as well. If it's a gym that's open around the clock, magicpin's Chennai guide says Snap Fitness and Anytime Fitness offer 24/7 access at several Chennai locations, which suits night-shift workers on OMR and anyone who wants to train before the heat. Neither chain publishes Chennai prices that we could find; magicpin estimates ₹2,200–3,800 a month for Snap and ₹3,000–4,500 for Anytime.
Round-the-clock access is worth paying for only if you'll use the odd hours. If you'll train at 7 AM like most people, a cheaper gym with normal hours gives you the same workout.
Monthly, quarterly or yearly: what Chennai's numbers say
Chennai gyms have long rewarded commitment. DT Next's 2016 report found private gyms charging ₹5,000 for three months, ₹8,000 for six and ₹12,000–15,000 for a year, so the yearly plan cost roughly ₹1,000–1,250 a month against about ₹1,670 on the quarterly one. Cult's prices today follow the same pattern, more steeply:
- One month at a time: ₹7,344, the most expensive way to train at Cult.
- Three months: ₹10,390, or ₹3,463 a month, less than half the single-month rate.
- Twelve months: ₹17,250, or ₹1,438 a month, provided you keep going. Used for only four months, it works out at about ₹4,300 a month.
Chennai's weather adds a twist. If heavy rain between October and December, or the hottest weeks of summer, tend to break your routine, a shorter plan, or one with enough pause days, may cost less in practice than the cheapest annual rate.
GST, enrolment and freezes
- GST is 5%. Since 22 September 2025, gym and health club services carry 5% GST instead of 18%, without input tax credit, after a GST Council decision reported by PTI. Gold's Chennai checkout pages add 5%.
- Enrolment. Both Gold's Chennai branches add ₹1,000 to the yearly fee. Ask any gym about joining fees before you compare prices.
- Pauses. Cult's longer passes include pause days. Ask other gyms for their freeze rule in writing.
- Rain closures. Ask whether the gym credits back days it closes during heavy rain or cyclone warnings.
What to check before joining a Chennai gym
- 1
Feel the air at your training hour
Chennai is humid for most of the year. Visit when you'll train and check the air-conditioning, or the fans and ventilation in a gym without it.
- 2
Look at the approach road
Ask locals whether the street floods in the northeast monsoon. A gym you can't reach for a week in November costs you that week.
- 3
Check the changing rooms and lockers
Especially if you'll come straight from work on OMR or go on to the office after a morning session.
- 4
Ask what floor help is included
General guidance is usually free; one-to-one training isn't. Our guide to personal trainer fees in Chennai covers what Chennai trainers charge.
- 5
Read the transfer and refund terms
