Gym fees in India: the short answer

There is no single price for a gym in India. What you pay depends on the type of gym, the city and how long you sign up for. A municipal or stadium gym can cost a few hundred rupees a month, a neighbourhood gym a couple of thousand, and a premium chain several thousand. Longer plans bring the monthly figure down a lot, but you pay the whole amount upfront.

The local, mid-range and premium ranges come from magicpin's guide to gyms in Delhi (updated October 2026, with prices it dates to April 2026). magicpin is a deals platform, and its figures are estimates for one city, not quotes. They're a useful guide to the gap between types of gym, which tends to hold across Indian cities even when the numbers shift.

Types of gym in India, and what the fee buys

Outdoor gyms and society gyms

Many city parks now have open-air gyms with fixed machines: cross-trainers, leg presses, pull-up bars. They cost nothing and are fine for bodyweight work and light conditioning, but you can't add weight, so progress stalls once you get stronger. Apartment and society gyms are often included in your maintenance charge or carry a small extra fee. Equipment varies from a treadmill and a rack of dumbbells to a well-kitted room. Check the heaviest dumbbell before you rely on one for strength training.

Government, municipal and stadium gyms

State sports departments, development authorities and municipal bodies run gyms inside stadiums and sports complexes. They are usually the cheapest staffed gyms in a city. As one example, the renovated gym at the district sports stadium in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, is free for sportspersons and costs the public ₹875 a month, according to a report from October 2026. Fees, hours and how you join differ by venue, so check with the stadium office.

Some government sports clubs work like private clubs instead, with a large entry fee plus a monthly subscription. When the Delhi Development Authority opened memberships to the fitness centre at Qutab Golf Course in May 2025, the lifetime entry fee was ₹5.50 lakh for the government category and ₹16.50 lakh for others, plus ₹1,320 or ₹1,980 a month, all excluding GST.

Local gyms

Independent neighbourhood gyms are where most people in India train. In magicpin's Delhi estimates they cost ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 a month. Quality varies more than price: one gym has new racks and air conditioning, the next has worn cables and a crowded floor at 7 PM. Many charge a one-time joining or admission fee and offer a discount for paying three, six or twelve months upfront.

Gym chains and premium clubs

Chains such as Cult.fit, Gold's Gym and Anytime Fitness charge more for newer equipment, longer hours, classes, more than one location and app booking. Premium clubs add pools, saunas, steam rooms and towel service. magicpin puts mid-range chains in Delhi at ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 a month and premium chains at ₹4,000 to ₹7,000.

Cult.fit membership cost per month and per year (2026)

Cult.fit publishes its cultpass prices on its website. Cult's support pages describe two main gym passes: cultpass ELITE gives unlimited access to all gyms in a city (and, per the price page, group classes), while cultpass PRO gives unlimited access to PRO gyms plus 2 sessions a month at ELITE gyms or cult centres. These are the prices the site showed for Bengaluru on 27 October 2026:

Cult also listed a 12-month all-India ELITE pack at ₹29,490 (about ₹2,458 a month) for people who want access in every city. Longer packs came with free extensions, two one-to-one onboarding sessions and pause days: 5 days on the 3-month ELITE pack, 15 on 6 months, 30 on 12 months and 60 on 24 months.

Gold's Gym and Anytime Fitness membership fees in India

Neither chain publishes a single national price list. Anytime Fitness's India website showed no membership prices when we checked, and Gold's Gym India sells memberships branch by branch, with the branch prices on its site not stating what period they cover (both checked October 2026). Two branches in the same city can charge differently. For one data point, magicpin's Delhi guide estimates the Anytime Fitness club in Vikaspuri at about ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 a month. Ask the branch for a written quote that states the plan length, what's included and whether GST is added.

Gym fees per month vs a yearly plan: do the maths

Compare the commitment and total cost as well as the monthly figure.
Compare the commitment and total cost as well as the monthly figure.

Gyms price long plans so that the monthly figure looks small. Using Cult's ELITE prices for Bengaluru: twelve single months at ₹7,344 would cost ₹88,128, while the 12-month pack costs ₹17,250. The yearly pack costs about as much as 2.35 single months, so it's cheaper if you would otherwise stay three months or more. The catch is that you pay it all upfront, and Cult's support page says it doesn't refund a purchased cultpass pack.

The honest way to compare is cost per visit you'll actually make. The table below divides the ₹17,250 yearly ELITE pack by different numbers of visits. These are our own calculations.

How you actually use itVisitsCost per visit
3 times a week, all year156about ₹111
Twice a week, all year104about ₹166
Once a week, all year52about ₹332
3 times a week for 2 months, then stop26about ₹663
What a ₹17,250 yearly membership costs per visit (our calculation)

If you've joined gyms before and stopped after a few weeks, a shorter plan at a higher monthly price may cost you less in the end. If you know you'll train three times a week, the long plan is usually the better deal. A day pass or one-month plan is a cheap way to test the commute and the crowd at your usual time first.

GST on gym membership: 5% since September 2025

The GST Council's 56th meeting cut the GST on gyms, salons, yoga centres and other physical well-being services from 18% (with input tax credit) to 5% without input tax credit, effective 22 September 2025. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) clarified that the 5% rate is mandatory: these businesses can't choose to charge 18% instead.

In practice, a ₹2,000 monthly fee plus GST should now come to ₹2,100, where it used to be ₹2,360. Ask whether a quoted price includes GST, and check that your invoice shows 5%. If a gym still bills 18% on a membership bought after 22 September 2025, ask why in writing.

Joining fees, freezes and extra charges

The headline monthly fee is rarely the whole bill. Before you pay, ask about each of these:

  • Joining or admission fee. Common at local gyms and clubs. Ask whether it's waived on a longer plan.
  • Freeze or pause days. Useful for travel, illness or exams. Cult's packs come with set pause days that grow with the plan length (30 days on a 12-month ELITE pack in October 2026). Ask how many days you get, the minimum block and how to request one.
  • What's included. Classes, a locker, towels, a diet consultation, a body-composition scan, parking.
  • Personal training. Almost always charged on top. Our guide to personal trainer fees in India covers what that adds.
  • Access to other branches. A Mumbai consumer commission ruled in November 2024 that a chain refusing a member entry to another branch, when the difference between plans was never explained, was a deficiency in service.
  • Automatic renewal. For monthly app subscriptions, check how to cancel before you sign up.

Cancellation, refunds and your consumer rights

Many gyms in India don't refund unused months. Cult's support page states that it does not refund any amount for a purchased cultpass pack, and that a monthly subscription can be cancelled so you aren't charged the next month. Read the refund terms before you pay, not after.

A no-refund clause doesn't mean you have no rights. Indian consumer commissions treat a gym that fails to deliver what it sold as a deficiency in service. In May 2024 the Gurgaon District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered a gym that ignored a member's refund request to refund ₹14,583 with 9% interest, pay ₹15,000 compensation and ₹11,000 in costs. In November 2024 the South Mumbai commission ordered a chain to refund half of a ₹16,000 annual fee plus ₹5,000 compensation.

How to compare gym fees and judge value

Check the equipment, access and terms you will actually use.
Check the equipment, access and terms you will actually use.
  1. Visit at your training time. A gym that's empty at noon can be packed at 7 PM. Count the squat racks and benches, and how many people are waiting for them.
  2. Time the commute. Fifteen extra minutes each way is two and a half hours a week at three visits.
  3. Compare cost per visit, not cost per month, using the number of visits you'll realistically make.
  4. Add every charge: joining fee, GST, personal training, parking.
  5. Check the equipment you need, such as dumbbells heavy enough for you in six months, not just today.
  6. Start short if you're unsure, then buy the long plan once the habit sticks.

If you're new to training, our guide to the gym workout plan for beginners shows what to do once you've joined.

Gym membership, a personal trainer, or both?

A membership buys access to equipment. It doesn't buy a plan, form checks or someone noticing when you've stopped progressing. Gym-floor trainers often help in passing, and chain personal training packages cost extra. Our comparison of a personal trainer vs a gym membership works through the combined monthly budget.

There's also a middle route: keep the cheaper gym and add a coach on video. In Personal Gym Training a certified coach joins you live on your phone at your own gym and watches every set: ₹799 a session, or ₹7,070 for a 4-week plan of 12 sessions. Get your gym's permission before you take a video call on the floor. Full prices are on our pricing page.

Gym fees in your city

Gym fees follow local rents and demand, so the same chain can charge differently in Mumbai and Jaipur. These city guides list local gym types, published chain prices and what to check before paying:

No gym nearby, or not keen on one? You can build real strength at home with a few dumbbells or just your bodyweight. Personal Home Training is live one-to-one coaching in your own space, from ₹899 a session.
