Chennai Marathon date: 3 January 2027
The Freshworks Chennai Marathon is the city’s main race, organised by the running club Chennai Runners. The official site gives the date of the 15th edition as Sunday 3 January 2027, and registration is open on thechennaimarathon.com (checked 27 October 2026). The 14th edition ran on 4 January 2026. Freshworks reported more than 22,000 runners at the January 2024 edition.
The race offers four distances. Start points and times for 2027 had not been published by late October 2026, so the table shows the 2026 race-day schedule, which is the best guide to what to expect. The organisers say they will confirm 2027 cut-offs and course-closing times before race day.
| Category | Distance and minimum age | 2026 start | 2026 finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Marathon | 42.195 km, 18+ | Napier Bridge, 4:00 AM | Indian Maritime University, ECR |
| Twenty Miler | 32.186 km, 18+ | Napier Bridge, 4:00 AM | Indian Maritime University, ECR |
| Half Marathon | 21.0975 km, 18+ | Elliot’s Beach, 5:00 AM | Indian Maritime University, ECR |
| 10K | 10 km, 16+ | Napier Bridge, 5:30 AM | CPT Ground, Taramani |
The course follows the coast: Marina Beach, Elliot’s Beach and then the East Coast Road south to the finish at the Indian Maritime University in Uthandi. The organisers describe it as near-flat. In 2026, full marathon runners had to reach the 28 km checkpoint within 4 hours 30 minutes, by 8:30 AM. Buses take full, Twenty Miler and half marathon finishers from the university back towards the city. The race also provides women-only aid stations with sanitary pads and pain relief.
Other half marathons in Chennai: the Navy and Dream Runners
Two other races draw thousands of Chennai runners, at very different times of year.

Indian Navy Half Marathon. The Navy held its first Chennai half marathon on 14 December 2025, starting near Napier Bridge and finishing at INS Adyar along the Marina, with a ₹10 lakh prize pool. The three races were named after naval units: the INS Adyar Half Marathon (21.1 km, 18 and over), the INS Parundu Run (10 km, 15 and over) and the INS Pallava Run (5 km, no age limit). We found no announcement of a 2026 Chennai edition by late October 2026; watch the Indian Navy’s official channels from November.
Hexaware Dream Runners Half Marathon (DRHM). Organised by the Dream Runners club, this is Chennai’s monsoon-season half, with a 21.1 km and a 10K. The 15th edition on 19 July 2026 drew 7,339 runners, according to the sponsor Hexaware, and registration ran through MyRaceIndia. In the lead-up, Dream Runners holds free training runs through its chapters across the city, which is a good way to find long-run partners. July is one of Chennai’s hottest race months, with an average high of 35.3 °C and a low of 26.4 °C.
Why Chennai races start before dawn: race-day weather
Chennai races start early because the heat arrives early. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 give an average low of 21.2 °C and a high of 29.3 °C for January, the Chennai Marathon month, with evening humidity of 67%. That is the coolest the city gets, but it still means the last hour of a marathon run after sunrise will feel warm and sticky. December, the Navy race month, is similar (21.9 °C low, 28.9 °C high) but sits at the tail of the northeast monsoon, with about 184 mm of rain in the month. July, for Dream Runners, is much harder: a 26.4 °C low means it is already warm at the start line.
Training through Chennai humidity: what to change
A January marathon in Chennai means training through October and November, the two wettest and most humid months (278–377 mm of rain and 76% evening humidity on average), and before that the heat of September. These adjustments make that block work:
- Run by effort, not pace. On a humid morning your heart rate climbs faster at the same speed. Slow your easy runs until you can talk in full sentences.
- Start at 5 AM. The race starts at 4–5:30 AM, so training at that hour also rehearses your race-morning routine: wake-up, breakfast, toilet, start.
- Drink on every long run. Carry water or loop past a shop every 5 km, and add an oral rehydration drink or salted buttermilk after runs over 90 minutes.
- Plan for monsoon washouts. When rain or flooding cancels a run in November, swap in an indoor strength session and move the long run to the next clear day rather than skipping both.
- Know the signs of heat illness. Dizziness, nausea, headache and heavy sweating mean stop, find shade and cool down. Confusion or hot, dry skin can be heatstroke: call 112.
Where Chennai runners do their long runs
The Marina promenade (about 6 km) and the Elliot’s Beach seafront are where most Chennai long runs begin, because they are flat, open early and close to the race course itself. A run from the Labour Statue south along the Marina and back, with the extension over Napier Bridge to Fort St. George, comes to about 14.7 km. For distances beyond that, many groups use stretches of ECR towards Uthandi to rehearse the finish of the marathon, but it is a fast highway, so only run it in a group, facing traffic and with lights before sunrise. See our guide to running tracks in Chennai for loop distances, park hours and free run groups.
A sample training week for a Chennai half marathon
This week suits someone eight to ten weeks out from the Chennai Marathon half or the Navy half who already runs about 20 km a week. It uses two indoor strength sessions, which also give you somewhere to train on the hottest or wettest days. The half marathon training plan for beginners has the full 12-week build, and strength training for runners explains the strength days.
- 1
Monday: strength 1 (indoors, 45 minutes)
Goblet squats, Romanian deadlifts, single-leg calf raises and side planks. Indoors, with a fan, at any time of day.
- 2
Tuesday: easy run, 5–6 km at 5:30 AM
Conversational pace on the Marina or Elliot’s Beach promenade, finishing with 4 short strides.
- 3
Wednesday: tempo, 20 minutes at comfortably hard effort
Warm up for 10 minutes first. On a very humid day, split it into 2 × 10 minutes with a short jog between.
- 4
Thursday: strength 2 (indoors, 45 minutes)
Split squats, step-ups, glute bridges and core. Keep it a day apart from Sunday’s long run.
- 5
Friday: rest
Or a 30-minute walk in the evening once the day has cooled.
- 6
Saturday: easy run, 5 km
Short and relaxed, with a water bottle.
- 7
Sunday: long run, building from 10 km to 16–18 km over the weeks
Start by 5 AM with your group, carry water, and practise your race-morning breakfast beforehand.
Taper and race-week food, Chennai style
Run less in the last week or two before race day (longer for a full marathon than for a half), keep a few short, quick efforts and keep strength sessions light. Because the Chennai Marathon falls on the first Sunday of January, the taper overlaps with the New Year, so plan your parties around it. The half marathon training plan for beginners sets out the taper week by week.
Chennai’s everyday food already has most of what race week needs. In the last two days, lean on familiar, easily digested carbohydrates: idli, pongal, plain dosa, lemon rice, curd rice and bananas. Rasam with rice is light and salty, which helps with fluid. Tender coconut water and salted buttermilk (neer mor) are good for fluid and salt in the heat. Go easy on deep-fried snacks, heavy biryani and very spicy food the night before, and don’t try anything new. On race morning, with a 4 or 5 AM start, eat something small, such as two idlis or a banana, about 90 minutes to two hours before, and rehearse that exact breakfast before your long runs.
