Marathon in Goa 2026: the SKF Goa River Marathon at a glance
If you searched for a marathon in Goa in 2026, the race you most likely want is the SKF Goa River Marathon, organised by the Vasco Sports Club since 2010. Its official site lists the 16th edition on Sunday, 13 December 2026, starting and finishing at the Chicalim Panchayat Ground in Chicalim village, Vasco da Gama, with the course running alongside the Zuari river. The organisers describe the route as AIMS-certified and closed to traffic until 10 AM on race morning.
It is a large race by Goa’s standards. A January 2025 Navhind Times feature reported 5,000 runners from 28 states and 12 countries at the previous edition. The race runs rain or shine, timing is by chip for every distance except the 5K, and results and photos from past years are on the timing partner’s site, ifinish.in.
| Race | Start | Cut-off (prize cut-off) | Fee and minimum age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full marathon, 42.195 km | 4:00 AM | 6 hours (5 h 30 min) | ₹3,600, rising to ₹4,000; 18+ |
| 20 Miler, 32 km | 4:30 AM | 5 hours (4 h 30 min) | ₹3,150, rising to ₹3,500; 18+ |
| Half marathon, 21.1 km | 5:30 AM | 3 h 30 min (2 h 45 min) | ₹2,700, rising to ₹3,000; 18+ |
| 10K run | 6:15 AM | 90 minutes (75 minutes) | ₹1,800, rising to ₹2,000; 16+ |
| 5K fun walk or run | 8:00 AM | Not timed | ₹1,000; open to all, under-12s accompanied |
The prices above are the “festival offer” rates shown on the race site in October 2026, with the higher figure being the next price band. The FAQ also mentions a 15% early-bird discount in the first two months of registration and 10% off for groups of 10 or more after that, so the price you pay depends on when and how you enter.
The full marathon needs a qualifying time
The Goa River Marathon asks full-marathon entrants to prove they have run a long race before. According to the official FAQ, you must show a finish from a recognised event of 6 hours or less for a full marathon, or 2 hours 45 minutes or less for a half marathon or longer. The rule applies only to the 42 km. The 32 km, the half marathon, the 10K and the 5K are open without a qualifying time, which makes the 20 Miler the longest distance a first-timer can enter here.
If you want to run the full marathon in December 2027, the practical route is to run the half this year in under 2:45, then build up through 2027. A 2:45 half marathon is a pace of about 7:49 per kilometre, which many runners can manage after a steady 12-week build-up.
Race-morning weather at Chicalim in December
December is Goa’s driest and coolest month, which is why the race sits there. Panaji’s 1991–2020 normals give a December average of only 2.5 mm of rain, a mean minimum of about 21°C and a mean maximum of about 33°C, and the organisers describe race-day weather as 20–28°C. The early starts are there to keep runners in that cool part of the day: the full marathon starts at 4 AM, in the dark, and the half at 5:30 AM.
The catch is the back end. A full marathoner close to the 6-hour cut-off finishes at about 10 AM, and a half marathoner near the 3.5-hour limit at about 9 AM, by which time the sun is up and the temperature is climbing towards the low 30s. If you expect to be near the cut-off, train for that: do some long runs that finish after sunrise, and practise drinking at every station rather than when you feel thirsty.
Registration, bibs and the rules people miss
- No refunds, transfers or deferrals. The FAQ is explicit: every registration is final. Enter only once you are sure of the date.
- Bibs are collected at the race expo in Chicalim, with photo ID and the confirmation email. There is no bib collection on race morning, so plan to be in Vasco the day before.
- Online registration closes in late November. When we checked, the FAQ still showed last year’s 25 November closing date, so check the site for this year’s.
- No pets on the course, no prams in the 5K, and there is no wheelchair category at present, though the organisers ask you to contact them for support.
- Only open-category prizes are announced on the day; age-category results are verified first.
A 12-week half marathon plan that ends on 13 December
Counting back 12 weeks from race day puts the first week at 21 September 2026, which lands neatly on the end of Goa’s monsoon. That shapes the plan: the first four weeks happen in the last of the rain, so they are short and steady, and the real long runs come in November when the roads are dry. Three runs and two strength sessions a week is enough for a first half marathon.
| Week | Dates (2026) | Long run | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 21–27 Sep | 6 km | Easy pace, run-walk is fine; dodge the last showers |
| 2 | 28 Sep–4 Oct | 7 km | Two strength sessions start this week |
| 3 | 5–11 Oct | 8 km | Add 4 × 1 min faster in one midweek run |
| 4 | 12–18 Oct | 6 km | Cut-back week |
| 5 | 19–25 Oct | 9 km | Start one long run at 5:30 AM, as on race day |
| 6 | 26 Oct–1 Nov | 10 km | Practise drinking on the move |
| 7 | 2–8 Nov | 12 km | Midweek: 20 min at goal pace |
| 8 | 9–15 Nov | 9 km | Cut-back week |
| 9 | 16–22 Nov | 14 km | Wear race-day shoes and kit |
| 10 | 23–29 Nov | 16 km | Longest run; finish after sunrise |
| 11 | 30 Nov–6 Dec | 12 km | Taper begins; keep one short faster run |
| 12 | 7–13 Dec | Race | Two short easy runs, then 21.1 km on Sunday |
For the 10K, halve the long runs from week 5 onwards and keep the rest. For the 32 km, you need a base of at least a comfortable half marathon before week 1, and the long run should reach about 26–28 km by week 10. The general principles behind a plan like this, from pacing to how fast to add distance, are in our half marathon training plan for beginners.
Race week in Vasco: a short checklist
- 1
Collect your bib early
Go to the expo at Chicalim with photo ID and your confirmation email. Someone else can collect it only with your signed authorisation and a copy of your ID.
- 2
Rehearse the early start
For a 4 AM or 5:30 AM gun, move your breakfast and alarm earlier for the last three or four days, and test the exact pre-race meal you’ll eat.
- 3
Plan transport before dawn
Roads on the course close on race morning. Fix how you’ll reach the Chicalim ground in the dark, and leave valuables at home: there is a baggage counter, but the organisers ask runners not to bring anything precious.
- 4
Drink to a plan
Use the hydration stations on the course rather than carrying a lot, and in the final hour sip at every station whether or not you feel thirsty.
Strength work that matters on the Zuari course
Adding too much running too quickly in October is the classic way to arrive in December with a sore knee, shin or Achilles. Two short strength sessions a week help protect against that: split squats and step-ups for the knees, single-leg calf raises for the Achilles, and hip work such as side planks and glute bridges. Each session needs 30 to 40 minutes and a pair of dumbbells or a backpack.
Fuel matters too, because a 16 km long run in Goa’s November humidity burns a lot more than a gym session. Our healthy food guide for Goa covers how to fit fish curry-rice, poi and beach-shack meals around training, and the TDEE calculator gives you a starting point for how much to eat.
Other races on Goa’s calendar
The River Marathon isn’t Goa’s only event. The same Navhind Times feature lists the Dr Ramani Goa Marathon, first held in 2004 and now run in Ponda, the I-Run Goa Marathon, the Rotary Rain Run at Bambolim, which grew from 350 runners in its first year to over 2,200 by its 10th edition, and the Tuffman Beach Ultra Marathon. For triathletes, IRONMAN 70.3 Goa held its fifth edition on 9 November 2025 from the Miramar beachfront in Panaji, with a 1.9 km swim, 90 km ride and 21.1 km run, and close to 1,300 athletes from 31 countries.
Dates for these change from year to year and we couldn’t confirm the 2026–27 dates for all of them, so check each organiser’s own channels before you plan a season. For the daily training, our guide to running tracks in Goa covers the Mandovi promenade, Altinho and the synthetic tracks at Bambolim and Peddem, and cycling in Goa is useful cross-training on easy days.
Training for a Goa race with an online coach
MakeMyFitness coaches every client on live video; there is no studio in Goa and no one comes to your door. A runner usually books personal gym training in Goa for strength days, or trains with friends in an online group class in Goa, which is cheaper per person. See online personal training in Goa for how it works, and our pages on personal trainer fees in Goa and gym fees in Goa to compare costs. If you’d rather train in the hills, treks near Goa make good long, slow days in the dry season.
