Guwahati’s race calendar at a glance
Three different organisers run Guwahati’s road races, which is why searches for “Guwahati marathon 2026” and “Guwahati marathon 2027” turn up different dates. The Guwahati Marathon, run by Paper Mache Pvt Ltd, moved from February to November for its third edition. The Guwahati International Marathon is a new, government-backed race in February 2027. And the Guwahati Half Marathon, now in its 16th edition, is organised by Techniche, IIT Guwahati’s techno-management festival, and was last held in April 2026. All three fall in the city’s cooler, drier months, which is no accident: Guwahati averages under 20 mm of rain a month from November to February.

Guwahati International Marathon 2027: the new February race
The Guwahati International Marathon was launched on 10 September 2026 by Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, with Sunil Gavaskar, and its first edition is on Sunday 7 February 2027. It is promoted by PMG Sports LLP with the Assam Tourism Development Corporation as state sponsor, and the organisers expect about 12,000 runners. The course starts and finishes at Judges Field and passes Gauhati University, crosses the new Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra and reaches IIT Guwahati in North Guwahati. It has been measured by an Australian Grade A road race course measurer, Kim Vivian, to international standards. With a ₹1.25 crore total prize purse, the organisers expect around 30 leading Indian and international distance runners at the front.
For the rest of the field, the official category pages listed phase 2 entry at ₹1,676 for the full marathon and ₹1,251 for the half marathon when we checked, with a minimum age of 18 (born on or before 7 February 2009) for both. There are also 10K, 5K and 1.5K community runs. Registration is through the race website’s ticketing partner.
Guwahati Half Marathon: IIT Guwahati’s April run
The longest-running of the three is the Guwahati Half Marathon, organised by Techniche at IIT Guwahati. Its 16th edition was held on 12 April 2026 at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Stadium in Sarusajai, with a 21 km “Glory Run” for experienced runners and a 6 km “Spirit Run” open to all, and a ₹2.5 lakh prize pool. EastMojo reported that the previous edition drew nearly 4,000 runners and described it as the largest student-organised marathon in the country. For the 2026 race, registration was still open on the Techniche website ten days before race day.
Race-day weather in Guwahati: November, February and April compared
The three races fall in quite different weather. Late November is dry and mild; February is the coolest race and the least humid; April is warmer, with pre-monsoon storms starting, so the half marathon is the one where heat and a wet road are most likely.
| Month (race) | High / low | Rain | Humidity |
|---|---|---|---|
| November (Guwahati Marathon) | 28.5 °C / 17.2 °C | 10 mm | 77% |
| February (International Marathon) | 27.0 °C / 13.0 °C | 18 mm | 59% |
| April (Guwahati Half Marathon) | 31.2 °C / 20.3 °C | 182 mm over about 11 rainy days | 62% |
Which Guwahati race suits you?
- Your first race of any kind: the Guwahati Marathon’s 5K Joy Run and Walk on 29 November is untimed and open to all ages, so you can walk it. The 6 km Spirit Run at IIT Guwahati’s April event is the other gentle start.
- Your first 10K: the Guwahati Marathon’s 10K City Run, open from age 12, gives you August to November to train, and the race morning falls in the dry season.
- A fast half or full marathon: February is the coolest race month, with a 13 °C average low and the lowest humidity of the three, and the International Marathon’s course has been measured to international standards. Train from November in the best weather of the year.
- A half marathon in spring: IIT Guwahati’s 21 km Glory Run in April, trained through January to March, before the heavy rain arrives.
How to train in Guwahati for each race
Each race puts your training block in a different season, and in Guwahati that changes everything. Our half marathon training plan for beginners has the week-by-week schedule; here is how to fit it to the city.
| Race | Start training | What the weather does to your block | Peak long run |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guwahati Marathon, 29 Nov | Early September (half) or early August (full) | Starts in 81–82% humidity and 185–264 mm of monsoon rain; eases in October | 18 km half, 30–32 km full |
| International Marathon, 7 Feb | November (half) or mid-October (full) | Almost the whole block in the dry, cool season | 18 km half, 30–32 km full |
| Guwahati Half, April | Mid-January | Cool start, warming through March; storms by April | 18 km |
- 1
Run early, especially in the monsoon block
In August and September, go out at first light and run by effort, not by your winter pace. Humidity above 80 per cent makes the same pace feel much harder.
- 2
Keep two strength sessions a week
Split squats, step-ups, Romanian deadlifts, calf raises and side planks protect knees and calves in the last third of a race. On days rain or flooding stops a run, do the strength session instead and move the run.
- 3
Practise the course’s features
For the International Marathon, include long, steady efforts on a bridge or overpass to get used to the climb onto the river crossing; for the half in April, practise one long run in warmer, wetter weather.
- 4
Taper for 10–14 days
Cut volume by about half, keep a few short runs at race pace, sleep, and eat familiar food: rice, dal, fish tenga, banana and curd.
Strength and food for Guwahati runners
Most first-time marathoners lose more time to tired legs in the last 10 km than to lack of aerobic fitness, and two strength sessions a week are the cheapest fix; our guide to strength training for runners has the exercises and progressions. If you lift in an apartment gym, Personal Gym Training in Guwahati puts a coach on video beside you, and a running group can train together with Group Classes in Guwahati at ₹499 per person. For food, Assamese meals suit runners well: rice for fuel, fish and dal for protein. Our guide to healthy food in Guwahati has the numbers, and the TDEE calculator shows how much more to eat in peak weeks.
