Vadodara Marathon 2027: the date and what we know
The official Vadodara Marathon website announces the 14th edition, the MG Vadodara Marathon 2027, on 7 February, with registrations open through its ticketing partner (checked 27 October 2026). The organiser’s home page and its price chart both give 7 February; dates can move, so recheck the official site before booking travel.
The race has grown fast. The first edition was flagged off at Navlakhi Ground on 22 November 2009 with 31,800 participants, according to Wikipedia, which also notes the race is accredited by AIMS, the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races. DeshGujarat reported nearly 1.10 lakh registrations for the 13th edition on 1 February 2026 and quoted organisers calling it Asia’s largest non-metro marathon.
| Edition | Participants or registrations |
|---|---|
| 2009 (first) | 31,800 participants |
| 2016 | Over 65,000 registrants |

Race morning: a 4 AM start at Navlakhi Maidan
Vadodara starts early. For the 2026 race, DeshGujarat published staggered times from Navlakhi Maidan: full marathoners reported at 3:40 AM for a 4:10 AM flag-off, half marathoners at 3:55 AM for 4:25 AM, the 5 km group at 4:45 AM for 5:15 AM and the 10 km at 5:30 AM for 6 AM. The official rules ask everyone to be in their bay by 4 AM, and starting before your own flag-off means disqualification.
| Race | Water points (km) |
|---|---|
| Full marathon | 2.5, 6, 8.5, 12.5, 14.5, 18.5, 23, 26, 29, 32.8, 36, 39 and the finish |
| Half marathon | 2.5, 6, 8.5, 12.5, 14.5, 18.5 and the finish |
| 10 km | 2.5, 6.5 and the finish |
| 5 km | 2.5 and the finish |
- Use only official water points. The rules say taking water from a non-designated point earns a warning, and a second offence means disqualification. You may carry your own bottle from the start.
- Collect your bib in person at the expo, or send someone with your signed authorisation letter and their government photo ID.
- Cross every timing mat, including the start: chip time is the official result, and a missed mat can mean no time at all.
- Plan your sleep backwards from a 3:40 AM report: lights out by about 8:30 PM, and a light breakfast you’ve practised in training.
The Vadodara marathon route: Raopura, Mandvi and Atal Bridge
The course is route-certified by AIMS, according to the official site. DeshGujarat’s 2026 route notes describe a city loop that leaves Navlakhi Ground for the old city, then crosses the Vishwamitri and climbs onto the flyovers in the west:
- Full marathon: Akota–Dandiya Bazar, Kothi, Raopura Road, Tower, Jubilee Baug, Mandvi Gate, Pratapnagar Bridge, Guru Nanak Circle, Makarpura, Lalbaug Bridge, Vishwamitri Road, Atal Bridge, Time Circle, Nilamber Circle, Vasna–Bhayli Canal Road and Gay Circle, back to Navlakhi.
- Half marathon: the same core through Kothi, Raopura, Tower, Mandvi Gate and Pratapnagar Bridge, then Tarsali, Susen Road, Lalbaug Bridge, Mujmahuda, Atal Bridge, Yog Circle and Sayajinagar Gruh.
- 10 km: Rajmahal Road, Lalbaug underbridge, Vishwamitri Bridge, Mujmahuda, OP Road, Atal Bridge and Akota Bridge.
Vadodara is flat, so the bridges and the long Atal Bridge flyover are the only real gradients. Practise them: in training, find a flyover or a ramp and run it several times at race effort, so the climb after the halfway mark feels familiar.
February weather for the Vadodara marathon
Early February is close to ideal for a race in Gujarat. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 give Vadodara an average February low of 15.4 °C and high of 32.1 °C, no measurable rain and evening humidity of about 31%. A 4:10 AM start means the first half runs in the coolest part of the day. A six-hour full marathoner, though, will finish around 10 AM as the sun gains strength, so pacing early matters more than banking time.
A 14-week Vadodara half marathon plan, starting in November
Count back 14 weeks from 7 February and you start in the first week of November, when Vadodara still averages 33.8 °C by day. Run early, keep easy runs truly easy, and let the cooler December and January weeks carry the longest runs. The plan assumes you can already run 5 km without stopping; if you can’t, start with our half marathon training plan for beginners, which builds from walking.
| Weeks | Runs a week | Longest run | Strength | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–3 (Nov) | 3 | 8–10 km | 2 sessions | Easy pace, early starts in the heat |
| 4–6 (late Nov–mid Dec) | 3–4 | 11–14 km | 2 sessions | Add one tempo run; practise a flyover |
| 7–10 (mid Dec–mid Jan) | 4 | 15–18 km | 2 sessions | Long runs on cool mornings; rehearse a 4 AM start once |
| 11–12 (mid–late Jan) | 4 | 18–19 km | 1–2 sessions | Race-pace blocks inside long runs |
| 13–14 (Feb) | 3 | 10–12 km, then 5 km | 1 light session | Taper: cut volume, keep a little speed |
| Day | Session | Vadodara notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Rest or a 20-minute walk | Recovery from Sunday’s long run |
| Tue | 45 minutes easy, plus 6 × 20-second strides | Cool mornings: around 13 °C at dawn on average |
| Wed | Strength, 40 minutes | Split squats, single-leg deadlifts, calf raises, side planks |
| Thu | Tempo: 10 minutes easy, 3 × 8 minutes at half marathon effort, 10 minutes easy | Use a flyover or ramp for one of the efforts |
| Fri | Strength, 30 minutes, lighter | Keep it crisp, not exhausting |
| Sat | 30 minutes very easy | Lay out kit and breakfast for Sunday |
| Sun | Long run, 16–17 km | Start at 5 AM once to rehearse race-day timing |
The 10 km or the half?
If November is your first month of regular running, the 10 km is the better target for 7 February. Its 1 hour 30 minute cut-off allows a run-walk, it flags off later (6 AM in 2026) and needs about half the weekly mileage. Choose the half if you can already run 5 km comfortably and have three or four mornings a week free until February. Either way, the strength work is the same, and it’s the part most first-timers skip.
Strength is what lets you hold form in the last 5 km. Two sessions a week of split squats, single-leg Romanian deadlifts, calf raises and side planks are enough; our guide to strength training for runners explains each one. Work out how much to eat during the heavy weeks with the TDEE calculator.
Race week on a Gujarati plate
You don’t need special food for a half marathon. In the last two days, lean towards familiar, easy-to-digest carbohydrates: rice, khichdi, rotli, potatoes, poha and bananas, with less fried farsan, raw salad and very spicy food than usual. Eat your main meal at lunch the day before, keep dinner light and early, and drink water steadily rather than in one go. On race morning, something small you’ve tested in training, such as a banana or a slice of bread with peanut butter, an hour before the start is plenty.
Our guide to healthy food in Vadodara covers sev usal, farsan and a full day of Baroda meals with calories and protein, for the training months before race week.
