The Bordermen Marathon: Amritsar's road race to the border
When people search for the Amritsar marathon, the race they mean is the Bordermen Marathon, organised by the Border Security Force's Punjab Frontier. It is run on the road west from Amritsar and finishes at the Joint Check Post (JCP) at Attari, on the border with Pakistan. All India Radio's news service reports that it is recognised by the Athletics Federation of India, runs under the theme “Hand in Hand with Border Population”, and aims to draw Punjab's young people toward fitness and away from drugs.
| Edition | Date | Runners | What was reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4th, 2025 | Sunday 23 February 2025 | Over 5,200 | Flagged off at Golden Gate by BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary; runners from central police forces, the Army, Punjab Police, civilians and athletes from abroad |
| 5th, 2026 | Sunday 22 February 2026 | Over 7,500 | Part of the BSF's diamond jubilee; flagged off by IG Punjab Frontier Dr Atul Fulzele; prize ceremony at JCP Attari |
| Next edition | Not announced | – | The 2026 date was announced in October 2025, so watch for news from about October 2026 |
Two editions in a row on the fourth Sunday of February suggest the next one will fall at a similar time, but treat that as a pattern, not a date. The Tribune reported the 2026 date on 13 October 2025, more than four months ahead, so a training plan that starts in early November leaves room either way.
Amritsar marathon routes: Golden Gate, the half-marathon start and Attari
The Bordermen Marathon is a point-to-point race: every category starts somewhere on the Amritsar side and all of them finish at JCP Attari. The full marathon starts at Golden Gate. The shorter races start further along the road, so everyone converges on the same finish.
| Category | Distance | Start, 2025 | Start, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full marathon (men and women) | 42 km in 2025; 42.5 km announced for 2026 | Golden Gate | Golden Gate |
| Half marathon (men and women) | 21 km | The War Memorial | India Gate, as announced |
| 10 km run (men and women) | 10 km | Lahorimal village | The last toll plaza near the international border |
| Finish, all categories | – | JCP Attari | JCP Attari |
Beyond the city the road runs through the flat farmland of the Majha region, so there are no real hills: train for a steady effort over the distance rather than for climbs. Because the race ends at the border, not back in the city, plan how you'll get back to Amritsar before race morning: check whether the organisers run return transport, or arrange a lift with friends or family.
Amritsar marathon registration: free entries, prizes and how to find the form
The BSF hasn't published a standalone race website that we could find, and neither All India Radio nor the Tribune gave a registration link or fee for 2026. What the official coverage does say is useful, though, and some of it is unusual for an Indian marathon.
- Free entry for women in the long races. For 2025, All India Radio reported that registration was free for all female participants in the 42 km and 21 km races.
- Free entry for border districts. Registration was also free for residents of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur and Fazilka districts in 2025.
- Prize money. The 2025 winners' prizes were ₹1,50,000 for the full marathon, ₹75,000 for the half and ₹50,000 for the 10 km run.
- When registration opens. It was already open on 27 January 2025, about four weeks before that year's race, and for 2026 the first registration was made publicly by the cricketer Abhishek Sharma in October 2025, according to the Tribune.
- Results. We found no published list of 2026 winners or finishing times. All India Radio reported only that winners were felicitated at JCP Attari, so check the BSF Punjab Frontier's announcements for results.
For the 2027 race, follow the BSF Punjab Frontier's official announcements and the Amritsar pages of The Tribune and All India Radio from October onwards. Confirm the fee, the cut-off times and your start point when you register, because the start points changed between 2025 and 2026.
Race-day weather: what late February is like on the road to Attari
A late-February race date means you train through the coldest, foggiest weeks of the Amritsar winter. IMD normals for 1991–2020 show January lows averaging 3.8°C, so early-morning runs in December and January are cold, and fog on many mornings makes roadside running risky. February is milder, with highs near 22°C, which suits racing well.
| Month | Average high / low | Rain | Training note |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 27.0°C / 9.4°C | 5.8 mm | Ideal base-building weather; start here |
| December | 20.9°C / 4.6°C | 6.8 mm | Cold dawns; run later in the morning or indoors on foggy days |
| January | 17.7°C / 3.8°C | 27.1 mm | The coldest month; layer up, and use a treadmill or indoor strength on dense-fog days |
| February | 21.7°C / 6.7°C | 39.8 mm over about 3 rainy days | Race month: cool and usually dry |
10 km, 21 km or 42.5 km: choosing your Bordermen distance
All three Bordermen races finish at the same place and on the same morning, so the choice is only about where you are now and how many weeks you have. Use this as a rough guide, counting back from a late-February race.
| Where you are now | Pick | Training time | Longest run to reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| New to running, can walk briskly for 30 minutes | 10 km | 10–12 weeks | 10–12 km |
| Run 5 km comfortably two or three times a week | 21 km | 16 weeks | 18–19 km |
| Have finished a half marathon and run all year | 42.5 km | 16–20 weeks on top of that base | 30–32 km |
| Returning from injury or a long break | 10 km, with your doctor's or physio's clearance | 12 weeks or more | Whatever your physio agrees |
Do your easy runs on a park loop such as Company Bagh, where you can stop at any time, and save the long runs for quiet roads at first light on Sunday, before traffic builds. On fog days, a treadmill or an indoor strength session is the safer choice.
A 16-week Amritsar winter plan for the Bordermen half marathon
Most first-timers should aim for the 10 km or the 21 km, not the 42.5 km. The plan below is for someone who can already run about 5 km without stopping, starting in early November for a late-February race. Our half marathon training plan for beginners explains the paces and the reasoning in detail; this version is built around Amritsar's winter.
| Weeks | Runs a week | Longest run | Strength and extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–4 (November) | 3 easy runs of 25–40 minutes | Builds from 6 to 9 km | 2 strength sessions: squats, lunges, calf raises, planks |
| 5–8 (December) | 3 runs, one with short faster intervals | Builds from 10 to 14 km | 2 strength sessions; treadmill or indoor work on fog days |
| 9–12 (January) | 4 runs, one at steady half-marathon effort | Builds from 14 to 18 km | 1–2 strength sessions; keep long runs to late morning |
| 13–14 (early February) | 4 runs | 18–19 km once, then 14 km | 1 strength session, lighter weights |
| 15–16 (race fortnight) | 3 short runs with a few strides | 10 km, then 6 km in race week | Rest two days before the race |
- For the 10 km, use weeks 1–8 only and add a 10–12 km long run in January, then taper for a week.
- For the 42.5 km, you need a solid base first: a year of regular running and a half marathon behind you, with long runs reaching about 30–32 km.
- Practise on the clock. The race starts early, so do your longest runs at the same hour once or twice in February to learn how your body handles a cold start.
Two short strength sessions a week for hips, calves and core help keep your knees and Achilles comfortable as the long runs grow; our guide to strength training for runners lists the exercises.
Race-week food in Amritsar: kulcha can wait
Amritsar's food is a reason to visit, but the night before the race isn't the time for buttered kulcha and a tall glass of sweet lassi. In the last two days, eat familiar meals built on roti, rice, dal and curd, keep fried food out, and drink water through the day. On race morning, eat a small breakfast you've practised in training two to three hours before the start. For calories and protein in local dishes, read our guide to healthy food in Amritsar, and use the TDEE calculator to see how much more you need on heavy training weeks.
