The Coimbatore Marathon is the city’s big annual road race, owned by the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation, a registered charitable trust, and run with volunteers from the Coimbatore Runners group. Despite the name, it has no full marathon: the longest race is the half. The 2026 edition, sponsored as the Walkaroo Coimbatore Marathon, is on Sunday 20 December. Everything below is from the official site and FAQ, checked on 28 October 2026.

A service charge is added to each fee, and online payments carry a surcharge. Prizes are given in the 10 km and half marathon only. Start and finish, start times and the route had not been published when we checked; the organisers say they will email them and put them in a digital race booklet nearer the day. The half marathon’s 8:30 AM cut-off, 3.5 hours after its start, implies a 5 AM start.

Coimbatore Marathon registration: last date, payment and transfers

  • Where: on coimbatoremarathon.com (register.coimbatoremarathon.com) or by WhatsApp, using the QR code on the home page. Groups of more than 50 runners can email the organisers to register together.
  • Last date: 20 November 2026, or earlier if the target number of runners is reached.
  • Payment: card, net banking or UPI. Confirmation comes by email and SMS or WhatsApp.
  • Changing category: allowed until 20 November. Moving up (10 km to half) means paying the difference; moving down isn’t guaranteed a refund.
  • Cancelling: the fee is non-refundable and non-transferable; it is treated as a donation to the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation and, according to the FAQ, qualifies for a Section 80G tax deduction.

The money goes to cancer care. The Coimbatore Cancer Foundation was set up on 4 March 1991 by K. Sreenivasan, himself a cancer patient, and the marathon’s proceeds pay for patients’ surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, investigations and rehabilitation. Show Space, the events company that also works on the Chennai Marathon, has partnered on the race since 2013.

What a 3.5-hour half marathon cut-off means for a beginner

A 3.5-hour limit for 21.1 km works out to just under 10 minutes a kilometre, which is a brisk walk for many fit people. So the Coimbatore half is realistic for a first-timer who runs some and walks some, as long as they can keep moving for three hours. After the cut-off, aid stations close in sequence and roads reopen to traffic, and anyone still on the course continues at their own risk. The 10 km also closes at 8:30 AM, but its start time hasn’t been announced, so wait for the race booklet before working out your pace.

December weather in Coimbatore: why the timing helps

Check conditions and plan your timing, water and an indoor alternative.
Check conditions and plan your timing, water and an indoor alternative.

The Coimbatore Marathon used to be held in the first week of October and moved to December from 2020. Race morning now falls in the city’s coolest stretch. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 give Coimbatore an average December high of 29.5 °C and low of 19.7 °C, with 33 mm of rain in the month. The harder part is the training block: October (156 mm) and November (140 mm) are the wettest months of the year, so some runs will move indoors.

MonthAverage highAverage lowRain
October31.7 °C22.3 °C156.1 mm
November30.2 °C21.5 °C139.7 mm
December (race month)29.5 °C19.7 °C33.1 mm

Coimbatore’s organisers call the course “fast, flat and fabulous”. A flat road and cool start make it a good first half marathon, but the sun rises while slower runners are still out, so finish strong with water at every station and a cap for the last hour.

Free Coimbatore Marathon training groups by area

The organisers run free training for registered runners through local chapters, each with a WhatsApp group, set days and a meeting point. In October 2026 the training page listed chapters at Race Course, AERO Runners in Peelamedu, Kalapatti, Kovaipudur (Kovaipudur Striders, and the Kovaipudur Walkers and Runners Club), Pacemakers and Universal Runners in Thudiyalur, Podanur Runners, SBC Striders in Saibaba Colony, Saravanampatti, and Ticel Runners around Vadavalli. Coimbatore Runners itself, founded in 2011, says it has more than 500 members and that membership is free.

Group runs give you company and a weekly long run. What they rarely give is individual strength work, which is what keeps first-time half marathoners off the injury list. That is where a coach on video fits.

An 8-week plan from now to 20 December

From late October there are about eight weeks to race day, enough for someone who can already jog 20–30 minutes to finish the half marathon, or for a new runner to finish the 10 km. This is a compressed version of our half marathon training plan for beginners: three runs and two short strength sessions a week, with the long run on Sunday to match race day.

8 weeks to the Coimbatore half marathon (Sunday long runs; easy pace means you can talk)

Training for the 10 km instead? Halve the Sunday distances, cap the longest at 8 km, and keep the strength sessions. When November rain floods your usual roads, swap the weekday run for 30–40 minutes of brisk stair climbing or a home circuit rather than skipping it.

Strength work that keeps Coimbatore runners on the road

Two 30-minute sessions a week are enough. The why is in our guide to strength training for runners; for this race, focus on:

  1. 1

    Single-leg strength

Split squats and step-ups, 3 × 8 each leg. Running is a series of one-legged landings; this is where shin and knee niggles start.

  2. 2

    Calves and feet

Slow single-leg calf raises, 3 × 12 each side, off a step. They carry the load once your legs tire after 15 km.

  3. 3

    Hips

Glute bridges 3 × 12 and side-lying leg raises 3 × 15, to keep knees tracking straight on a flat, fast course.

  4. 4

    Trunk

Plank and side plank, 3 × 30 seconds, so your form holds in the last 5 km.

Race-week checklist for the Coimbatore Marathon

  1. Read the digital race booklet as soon as it arrives: start point, start time, parking and baggage drop.
  2. Eat a familiar dinner the night before, idli or rice with dal rather than anything new, and set two alarms; a 5 AM start means waking by 3:30.
  3. Wear shoes and clothes you have already run 14 km in. Race day is not the time for new shoes.
  4. Start slower than you want to. The first 5 km on fresh legs feel easy; the last 5 km decide your finish time.
  5. After the finish, walk for 10 minutes, drink water, and eat something with protein and carbohydrate within the hour.
