Vizag Navy Marathon 2026: date, distances and fees
The Vizag Navy Marathon is Visakhapatnam’s biggest race, and it is run by the Navy itself: the Eastern Naval Command organises it every December as part of the Navy Day celebrations, and the 11th edition is on Sunday 13 December 2026. According to All India Radio’s News on Air, registrations opened on 4 October, the route is accredited by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), and prize money is about ₹10 lakh. The race has grown from about 4,000 runners in 2014 to 17,000 in 2025.
Each of the four races is named after a type of warship, which is how the official site lists them. The fees below are from the official registration page, checked in October 2026; the early-bird offer runs until 10 November 2026, and the site doesn’t state a final closing date, so don’t leave it late.
| Race name | Distance | Entry fee | Start time in 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frigate Run | 5 km | ₹900 | 6:15 AM |
| Aircraft Run | 10 km | ₹1,300 | 5:30 AM |
| Submarine Run | 21.1 km (half marathon) | ₹1,600 | 4:30 AM |
| Aircraft Carrier Run | 42.2 km (full marathon) | ₹1,800 | 4:15 AM |
The 2026 start times hadn’t been published when we checked, so the last column shows the 2024 schedule as reported before that race. Expect something similar: the full and half marathon set off in the dark, and the 5 km starts after sunrise. The entry includes a finisher medal, a T-shirt, an e-certificate, refreshments and a timing chip on the bib. The organisers also hold a promo run on 1 November 2026, with separate registration, which is a good low-pressure way to try the course area before race day.
The Navy Marathon route along Beach Road
The official site describes the course as a start at RK Beach with the Bay of Bengal in view, a coastal run, a section through the city centre, and a finish at Park Circle on RK Beach. In 2024 all four races started and finished in front of the Vishwapriya Function Hall near RK Beach, with turnaround points along the way. The full route map is on the official site; check it once it is posted for 2026, because turnaround points can change between editions.
For training, what matters is that most of the course is on or near Beach Road, which Wikipedia lists as 31.9 km long from the port to Bheemili Beach. The road is mostly flat, but the sea front is exposed: a headwind on the way out usually means help on the way back, and the camber near the beach can be uneven. Do your long runs on the same road so race day holds no surprises. In 2024, the organisers reported 12 medical stations, 12 to 16 hydration stations and five ambulances along the routes.
Other races in Visakhapatnam: the SBI Green Marathon
Vizag’s second regular road race is the SBI Green Marathon, run by SBI and Radio Mirchi as a national series. It came to Visakhapatnam for the first time on 17 November 2024, when more than 3,500 runners took part at RK Beach over 5K, 10K and 21K, with AIMS certification. Runners get organic T-shirts, and 5K runners get plantable bibs.
Season 7’s Visakhapatnam race is listed on the District ticketing app for Sunday 22 November, with a 5:00 AM start, venue still to be announced, and tickets from ₹826 (checked October 2026). Runners aged 5 and above need a ticket. Three weeks before the Navy Marathon, it makes a useful tune-up: run the 10K hard or the 21K at an easy pace, then recover for the main race.

Race-day weather: why December suits a Vizag marathon
December is about as good as running weather gets in Visakhapatnam. IMD’s 1991–2020 normals for the city station show December averaging 28.7 °C at its warmest and 21.0 °C at its coolest, with about 13 mm of rain spread over less than one rainy day, and humidity at 5:30 PM down to 65%, the lowest of the year. A 4:15 AM start puts the full marathon in the coolest hours, and most runners will finish before the sun has real strength.
Training is the harder part, because the build-up falls in Vizag’s wettest and most humid stretch. October averages about 240 mm of rain over 8.4 rainy days, with 74% humidity, and November still brings about 102 mm. Nights stay warm too: the October average low is 25.2 °C. That means slower paces than you’ll run on race day, plenty of fluid and salt on long runs, and rearranging the week around rain and cyclone warnings rather than skipping it. Run your easy days by effort, not by the watch; if the pace feels slow in October, December will feel easier.
Seven weeks to the Navy Marathon half: a training plan
From the end of October there are about seven weeks to 13 December, which is enough to take a runner who can already run 5 km without stopping to the Submarine Run, the 21.1 km half marathon. If you are starting from zero, enter the Frigate Run (5K) or the Aircraft Run (10K) this year instead, and use our half marathon training plan for beginners for a longer build towards next December.
| Week starting | Weekday runs | Long run (Sunday) | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 October | 2 × 30 min easy | 8 km easy | 2 sessions, 30 min |
| 2 November | 2 × 35 min easy, 1 × 6 short hill reps | 10 km | 2 sessions |
| 9 November | 2 × 40 min, one with 3 × 5 min steady | 12 km | 2 sessions |
| 16 November | 2 × 40 min easy | SBI Green Marathon 10K, or 14 km easy | 1 session |
| 23 November | 2 × 45 min, one with 4 × 5 min steady | 16 km | 2 sessions |
| 30 November | 2 × 40 min easy | 18 km, the longest run | 1 light session |
| 7 December | 2 × 25 min easy, with a few strides | Race: Sunday 13 December | None in race week |
Run the long runs on Beach Road at the same time as the race, starting at about 4:30 or 5 AM, so your body and stomach learn the early start. For the hill repetitions, the road up Kailasagiri gives a short, steep climb right above the course. Take water every 20 to 30 minutes on runs over an hour; Vizag’s humidity means you’ll lose more sweat than you expect even before sunrise.
Strength work for Navy Marathon runners
Most runners who get hurt in a seven-week build do so because the mileage climbs faster than the legs can cope. Two short strength sessions a week protect against that: squats or split squats, step-ups, single-leg Romanian deadlifts, calf raises and planks. Keep them on easy days or after short runs, never the day before the long run, and cut back to one light session in the last fortnight. Our guide to strength training for runners gives the full routine.
If you train in a gym already, Personal Gym Training in Visakhapatnam puts the same coaching on your phone at the gym you use. For a running group, group classes in Visakhapatnam cost ₹499 per person per live session, which makes a weekly strength and mobility class for the whole group affordable.
Race-week food and recovery in Vizag
In the last three days, eat a little more rice, idli or dosa than usual and keep fat and fried food low, so your muscles start full of carbohydrate. Keep the night-before dinner simple and familiar: rice with rasam or dal and a lean fish curry works better than a biryani or a seafood fry. On race morning, have something small that you’ve tried before a long run, such as a banana or two idli, about 90 minutes before the start, which for a 4:15 AM gun means eating at about 2:45 AM. Our guide to healthy food in Vizag has calories and protein for local dishes, and the TDEE calculator shows how much more you burn in a heavy training week.
After the race, walk for ten minutes, drink and eat within an hour, and keep the next three or four days to walking and gentle mobility. If you’re a cyclist too, our guide to cycling in Vizag has easy recovery rides on the same road.
