Cycling in Guwahati: a dry winter and a long, wet summer
Guwahati’s riding year is lopsided. India Meteorological Department normals for the city’s airport (1991–2020) show almost no rain from November to February, then a build-up from April, when storms arrive, to a monsoon peak of about 314 mm in June. Humidity stays high for most of the year, around 80 per cent from July to October. Winter is the reward: January averages a low of about 11 °C and a high of 24 °C, which is about as good as cycling weather gets in India.
| Month | High / low | Rain | Humidity |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 23.9 °C / 10.8 °C | 12 mm | 72% |
| February | 27.0 °C / 13.0 °C | 18 mm | 59% |
| March | 30.5 °C / 16.5 °C | 53 mm | 51% |
| April | 31.2 °C / 20.3 °C | 182 mm | 62% |
| May | 31.8 °C / 22.9 °C | 253 mm | 71% |
| June | 32.6 °C / 25.2 °C | 314 mm | 78% |
| July | 32.8 °C / 25.9 °C | 283 mm | 80% |
| August | 33.2 °C / 25.8 °C | 264 mm | 81% |
| September | 32.5 °C / 24.9 °C | 185 mm | 82% |
| October | 31.3 °C / 22.3 °C | 118 mm | 79% |
| November | 28.5 °C / 17.2 °C | 10 mm | 77% |
| December | 25.4 °C / 12.6 °C | 5 mm | 76% |
- November to February: the season. Dry roads, cool mornings, long rides. Carry a light layer for a 6 AM start in December and January.
- March: still dry at about 53 mm, and the lowest humidity of the year; the last good month for long rides.
- April to September: storms, then monsoon, with 12–15 rainy days a month from May to August. Ride short and early, and avoid roads that flood after heavy rain.
- October: rain tails off to about 118 mm; the season restarts by the end of the month.
Best places for cycling in Guwahati
| Route | Distance or size | What it’s like | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brahmaputra riverfront, Pan Bazar | Phase 1 open since January 2024; 6 km planned | Riverside paths with walking and jogging tracks | Walkers; ride slowly or use the road beside it |
| Over the Saraighat bridges to North Guwahati | 1,298 m rail-cum-road bridge, with a parallel bridge from 2017 | The classic river crossing | Heavy highway traffic |
| Across the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu | 1.24 km, six lanes, opened 14 February 2026 | The newer crossing to North Guwahati | Fast traffic on a new road |
| Deepor Beel | About 13 km south-west of the city | Flat wetland edge; birds in winter | National highways run along its edges |
The Brahmaputra riverfront: what’s open and what’s planned
The riverfront between Raj Bhawan on Kharghuli hill and Kamakhya on Nilachal hill is Guwahati’s most talked-about place to ride, and it is part built, part planned. Guwahati Smart City Limited’s feasibility report describes a 6 km riverfront on the south bank with a walkway, a cycle track and a jogging track along its full length, in five landscape segments: Kamakhya, Machchowa, Governor’s Hill, Kachari Ghat and Raj Bhawan. It estimates about 36 months of construction, in separate packages.
What exists today is the first phase at Pan Bazar, opened in January 2024 at a cost of ₹34 crore, with green open space, walking and jogging tracks, river viewpoints and lighting, according to the Assam Tribune; a second phase was estimated at ₹35.85 crore. The report of the opening mentions no cycle track, so for now the riverfront is a place to ride slowly and share, not to train hard. Early weekend mornings in winter are the best time, before walkers fill the paths.
A river loop over Guwahati’s two crossings
For years the only way across the Brahmaputra by road was the Saraighat bridge, a 1,298 m rail-cum-road bridge completed in 1962, joined in January 2017 by a parallel New Saraighat bridge. On 14 February 2026 a second route opened: the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, a 1.24 km six-lane bridge linking Guwahati and North Guwahati. Together they make a river loop possible for the first time: cross one bridge, ride through North Guwahati, and return over the other. The loop’s length depends on where you start, so map it from home before your first attempt.
These are busy road bridges, built for trucks and cars, and we found no published information on cycle lanes on either. Ride them at first light on a Sunday, in a group if you can, with lights front and rear even in daylight.
Deepor Beel and rides out of the city
Deepor Beel, a Ramsar wetland about 13 km south-west of Guwahati on the Jalukbari–Khanapara bypass, is the city’s flattest scenic ride. Wikipedia records 219 bird species there, more than 70 of them migratory, and up to 19,000 waterbirds counted in a single day in winter, which is exactly when the riding is best. Its edges are bordered by national highways and a railway line, so pick the quieter local roads around it rather than the highway shoulder. Garbhanga forest lies just beyond, which our guide to treks near Guwahati covers.
Cycling clubs and events in Guwahati
Guwahati’s cycling scene is run by community groups rather than the city, and the events tell you who is active:
- Pedal for the Planet, March 2026: WWF-India’s Assam office opened Earth Hour with a cyclothon from the SAI complex at Paltan Bazar, with the Sports Authority of India, the Assam Cycling Community and a hospital partner; more than 70 cyclists rode.
- Saksham Cyclothon, February 2025: Oil India’s ride drew more than 250 participants in Guwahati, managed by the city non-profit Pedal for a Change and led by cycling and environmental activist Kaushik Guha.
If you are looking for a cycling club in Guwahati, those groups are the place to start; check their social pages for current rides. On bike hire, the only scheme we found was Aroha Bicycles, a student start-up that announced rental stations at Uzan Bazar and Ganeshguri in January 2021, after a launch ride at Dighalipukhuri that drew more than 100 cyclists. We couldn’t confirm whether it still operates, and we found no city-run public bike-share scheme as of October 2026.
Road safety for cyclists in Guwahati
The Sentinel, citing Guwahati police, reported 267 road deaths in the city in 2023, against 253 in 2022 and 248 in 2021. The figures don’t separate cyclists, but they show the trend is not improving, and the bridges and highway edges where riders like to go are where traffic is fastest.
| Year | Road deaths in Guwahati |
|---|---|
| 2021 | 248 |
| 2022 | 253 |
| 2023 | 267 |
- Wear a helmet, and use lights by day on the bridges and highways.
- Avoid GS Road and the bypass at rush hour; go out before 7 AM on weekends.
- Stay off flooded roads in the monsoon: standing water hides potholes and open drains.
- Ride in a group for river crossings and anything beyond the city.
A winter cycling week in Guwahati
The dry season is short, so make the most of it. From November to February, a rider building fitness in Guwahati can fit three rides and two strength sessions into a working week without riding in the dark on busy roads:
- 1
Tuesday, 6 AM: easy 45 minutes
A relaxed spin on the quietest roads near home, or the riverfront paths at Pan Bazar at a gentle pace. Wear a light layer: December and January mornings start near 11–13 °C.
- 2
Wednesday: strength at home or in the gym
Split squats, Romanian deadlifts, rows, push-ups and side planks, 40–45 minutes.
- 3
Thursday, 6 AM: hard efforts
After a warm-up, 5 × 3 minutes at a pace where talking is difficult, with 3 minutes easy between, on a flat stretch you know well.
- 4
Saturday: strength and mobility
A shorter session, then 15 minutes of hip, hamstring and upper-back mobility.
- 5
Sunday, first light: the long ride
Build from 90 minutes to 3 hours across the season: the river loop over both bridges, or out to Deepor Beel and back, with water and a snack for every hour.
Strength and mobility work for Guwahati riders
Cycling trains the heart and the front of the thighs, but it does little for bone strength, the upper back or hip mobility, and long winter rides expose weak glutes and a stiff lower back. Two short strength sessions a week fill the gaps: split squats and step-ups, hip hinges, rows, push-ups and side planks, plus hip and upper-back mobility after rides. From May to September, when rain cancels many rides, those sessions keep your fitness up until the dry months return. Our guide to cycling for weight loss covers how often to ride and how hard.
If you train in an apartment gym in Beltola or a gym off Zoo Road, Personal Gym Training in Guwahati puts a coach on your phone there, and Personal Home Training in Guwahati works in your living room.
