Treks near Coimbatore at a glance: official trails, grades and fees
Coimbatore sits at about 427 m with the Western Ghats on three sides, so a forest trail is rarely more than an hour or two away. Almost every legal trek in those forests is now sold by Trek Tamil Nadu, run by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department with the Tamil Nadu Wilderness Experiences Corporation (TNWEC). Its July 2026 trail list puts six routes in Coimbatore district and nine in the Nilgiris. The table below takes distance, time, grade and the highest point from each trail page, and the price from the booking box (checked 28 October 2026).

How forest trekking near Coimbatore is booked
You can’t walk into a Coimbatore forest trail on the day and pay at a gate. Trek Tamil Nadu sells every slot online at trektamilnadu.com, after you sign up with a mobile number, and the e-ticket arrives by email. Instant booking works only if a slot is still open. The FAQ and refund pages set the ground rules (checked October 2026):
- Guided only. Every trek goes out with a forest guide, at one guide to five trekkers, and the guide is part of the fee.
- No solo treks. The site advises a group of at least five people; a solo booking is not allowed.
- Children: trekkers aged 9 and below may only do easy trails, with a parent or guardian, and minors need a signed consent form.
- Reporting time: be at the reception point 30 minutes before the start. Most Coimbatore trails start at 7 or 8 AM.
- Refunds: 90% back if you cancel more than 14 days ahead, 75% from 14 to 7 days, 50% from 7 days to 72 hours, nothing within 72 hours. One free change of date is allowed up to 24 hours before.
- Not allowed: alcohol, smoking, lighters or matches, single-use plastic, speakers, pets, and bathing in streams or falls.
Perumalmudi and Siruvani: the two big forest days west of Coimbatore
Sembukarai to Perumalmudi is the closest proper hill to the city. Trek Tamil Nadu describes Sembukarai as a tribal village about 18 km from Coimbatore, and the trail climbs 5 km through dry deciduous and semi-evergreen forest to a rocky summit with views of the Perumal Mudi peak. The highest point is about 1,527 m, roughly 1,100 m above the city, which is why a 10 km round trip is budgeted at 6 hours. You report at the Mangarai forest checkpost, 29 km from Coimbatore airport, for an 8 AM start.
Sadivayal to Siruvani is the only trail near Coimbatore graded tough. It is 7 km each way on a winding path up the Western Ghats slope, through dry and moist deciduous forest, and the trail page lists tigers, elephants, sloth bears and spotted deer among the animals in the area. Its high point is lower than Perumalmudi’s, about 984 m, but the 8-hour round trip and 7 AM start make it the longest day in the district. The packing list includes leech socks and a rain jacket, which tells you how wet the slope gets.
If you have done one moderate trail, Perumalmudi is the better first step up. Save Siruvani until you can walk for five hours with a pack and still enjoy the descent.
Trekking near Isha, Coimbatore: the Velliangiri climb
Most searches for “trekking near Isha Coimbatore” are about the Velliangiri Mountains, the range that rises behind Poondi, about 30 km west of the city. It is not a Trek Tamil Nadu trail. It is a pilgrimage path across seven hills (Sapthagiri) to a shrine on the seventh, at about 1,778 m. The forest department allows the climb only from February to May, because the hills are a protected area, and a forest check post at the base screens bags for plastic.
Velliangiri is much harder than its reputation as a pilgrimage suggests. In March 2024 three pilgrims died on the path within 24 hours, two more had died that February, and eight died in 2023, according to The News Minute. That season the forest department barred people with high or low blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, breathlessness or epilepsy, set up a medical camp at the foot of the hills, and allowed only boys and men aged 10 to 60 on the path. Check the current year’s rules before you go, because they are announced each season.
Anamalai trails from Pollachi: Top Slip, Aliyar and Manambolly
South of Coimbatore, the Anamalai Tiger Reserve has three Trek Tamil Nadu trails, all reached through Pollachi. Top Slip to Pandaravarai (8 km, moderate) runs through Karian Shola and evergreen forest into grassland with a stream crossing, at up to 1,280 m, and the trail page mentions Nilgiri tahr and gaur. Aliyar canal bank is the easy one: an 8 km, one-way walk along the forested bank of the Aliyar Project canal, at about 475 m, good for birdwatching and for anyone’s first guided trek. Manambolly, between Sholayar Dam and Valparai, is a 16 km moderate trail through semi-evergreen forest, home to the lion-tailed macaque and great hornbill.
These make a full day from Coimbatore. Top Slip’s reception is 85 km from Coimbatore airport and Manambolly’s is 122 km, so plan to leave before dawn or stay a night near Pollachi or Valparai.
Mountain trekking near Coimbatore: the Nilgiris shola trails
For mountain trekking near Coimbatore, the Nilgiris begin at Mettupalayam, 35 km away and about 325 m high, and climb to Ooty at 2,240 m. Trek Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris trails start well above 2,000 m, so the air is cooler and thinner than anything on the plains:
- Longwood Shola, Kotagiri (3 km, easy, ₹699): a small shola forest beside Kotagiri town with marshes and streams. The shortest and cheapest trek here, and a good one for families.
- Karikaiyur to Rangasamy Peak (8 km, moderate, ₹1,299): about 20 km from Kotagiri, a steep climb through forest to a viewpoint at about 2,000 m.
- Avalanche to Kolaribetta (11 km, moderate, ₹1,999): a jeep ride into the cauliflower shola, then grassland with views of Mukurthi Peak and the Upper Bhavani dam, up to about 2,625 m.
- Parsons Valley to Mukurthi hut (20 km, tough, 8 hours, ₹1,599) and Avalanche to Devarbetta (13 km one way, tough, ₹2,699): the longest days in the Nilgiris, for experienced trekkers only.
When to trek near Coimbatore: fire closures, two monsoons and Velliangiri season
The trekking calendar near Coimbatore doesn’t follow the city’s weather. Trek Tamil Nadu closes its trails for about two months from 15 February, when forest fires are most likely, which is exactly when the Velliangiri season opens. The hills catch the southwest monsoon from June (Valparai averages 3,538 mm of rain a year), while the city itself gets most of its rain from the northeast monsoon in October and November. City figures below are India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020.
| Months | Coimbatore weather | What it means for treks |
|---|---|---|
| December–January | Highs 29.5–30.9 °C; 33 mm and 4 mm of rain | The best window: cool mornings, dry trails, all Trek Tamil Nadu routes open |
| Mid-February to mid-April | Highs 33.2–36.4 °C; under 45 mm a month | Trek Tamil Nadu trails closed for fire season; Velliangiri open |
| May | High 35.0 °C; 57 mm of rain | Velliangiri season ends; Trek Tamil Nadu reopened; start early |
| June–September | Highs 31.5–32.5 °C; 25–62 mm in the city | Southwest monsoon on the Ghats: leeches, slippery rock, heavy rain at Valparai and Siruvani |
| October–November | 156 mm and 140 mm of rain | Northeast monsoon; treks can be called off for weather, with a refund minus tax |
A 6-week plan to get trek-fit in Coimbatore
Perumalmudi climbs about 1,100 m and Siruvani keeps you walking for 8 hours, so the plan below builds leg strength for the climb, slow control for the descent and enough stamina to walk most of a day. The reasoning behind it (why step-downs protect your knees, how to load a pack) is in our national guide on how to prepare for a trek. Here it is fitted to Coimbatore: early mornings before the heat, your building’s stairs, and an easy trail as a test.
- 1
Weeks 1–2: walking base and legs
Three brisk 40-minute walks a week before 7 AM, while the Palakkad Gap breeze keeps it cool. Two strength sessions: goblet squats 3 × 10, step-ups onto a stair 3 × 10 each leg, glute bridges 3 × 12, side plank 3 × 20 seconds each side.
- 2
Week 3: stairs
Add one stair session: climb 8–10 floors, take the lift down, repeat three times. If you live in an independent house in RS Puram or Saibaba Colony, use a long flight of stairs or the terrace steps, 15 minutes of climbing in total.
- 3
Week 4: first trail
Book Aliyar canal bank or Longwood Shola. Midweek, do the stair session with a 4 kg daypack and add reverse lunges 3 × 8 each leg.
- 4
Week 5: descent work
Slow step-downs from a stair, 3 × 8 each leg, taking three seconds to lower. Single-leg Romanian deadlifts 3 × 8. One 2-hour walk with a 5 kg pack on a Sunday morning.
- 5
Week 6: the big day
Perumalmudi or Top Slip. Rest two days before it, eat a normal dinner and a carbohydrate breakfast, and carry at least 2 litres of water. Save Siruvani for after you’ve done one 6-hour day comfortably.
Staying safe on Coimbatore’s forest trails
- Elephants. Velliangiri, Siruvani and the Anamalai trails are elephant country. Stay with the guide, keep quiet and never leave the trail to take a photo.
- No network. Trek Tamil Nadu warns that mobile coverage is unreliable in the forest, so tell someone at home your trail and expected return time.
- Water and heat. The approach roads warm up fast from March. Start in the first slot, carry water in a steel or reusable bottle, and eat before you climb.
- Footwear. Shoes with real grip for wet rock and leaf litter; running flats slip on Perumalmudi’s rocky summit and the Siruvani slope.
- Knees on the way down. Most sore knees come from the descent. Shorter steps, and trekking poles if you have them, help a lot.
Coming back from a knee or ankle injury? Once your doctor or physio has cleared you, Rehab & Recovery in Coimbatore rebuilds strength for slopes and steps on video, at your pace. It is exercise coaching after clearance, not physiotherapy.
