Cycling routes in Jaipur: where riders actually go
Jaipur should be an easy city to ride. The old city was laid out on a grid in the 18th century, the main roads are wide and most of the terrain is flat. In practice, cycling in Jaipur is an early-morning activity on a few roads, plus weekend rides out to the hills. A 2025 commentary by CUTS International describes JLN Marg as one of the few streets offering “some refuge” to cyclists, calls Tonk Road, Ajmer Road and Jhotwara Road perilous because of heavy traffic and no cycling infrastructure, and notes that safety worries keep most people from riding beyond the early morning.
| Route | Distance or scale | What it’s good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| JLN Marg and the roads around Central Park | Central Park has a 5 km walking and jogging track inside | Steady laps before the traffic builds | Ride the road, not the jogging track |
| Amer Road to Amer | Amer is 11 km from Jaipur | An out-and-back with a gentle climb and fort views | Tourist traffic after mid-morning |
| Towards Nahargarh | The fort is about 20 km by road from the railway station | Jaipur’s best hill climb | Steep, uneven sections; descend slowly |
| Weekend club loops out of the city | Group rides of about 40–50 km | Longer endurance rides with company | Highways: ride in a group, in daylight |
| Tonk Road, Ajmer Road, Jhotwara Road | Main arteries | Avoid for training | Heavy traffic, no cycle lanes |
Is there a cycling track in Jaipur?
Not a long one that you can rely on today. Central Park, built by the Jaipur Development Authority in 2006, has what Incredible India describes as a 5 km walking and jogging track, the longest in the city, but it is a path for people on foot. Most riders use the roads around the park instead, early in the morning.
Plans for dedicated cycle lanes have been announced before. A 2016 report in The Better India said an exclusive cycle track would connect Kishanpole Bazaar and Tripolia in the walled city, and that a further 9 km of cycle track was listed under Jaipur’s Smart City project, along with rental cycles at stands near bus stops. We couldn’t confirm in October 2026 which of these were built or are in use, and we found no current public bike-share scheme in Jaipur. If you’re searching for a cycling track in Jaipur, check the Jaipur Smart City and JDA announcements for the latest, and plan your training around roads and quiet colonies.
Cycling groups and events in Jaipur
Jaipur’s cycling community is small but active. Jaipur Cycling Club runs weekend rides of over 50 km and encourages daily riding for cyclists of all levels, according to its ride-leader profile on Giant Bicycles India. The same page logs club rides in February and March 2024 of about 40–53 km, each with around 20 riders and under 200 m of climbing, which tells you what a typical Sunday looks like: flat to rolling, social, done by mid-morning. The page also mentions local competitive events, the Pink City Trail Challenge and MTB Jaipur, for mountain bikers.
Fit India Sundays on Cycle, the Sports Ministry’s national weekly ride, also comes to Jaipur. The Press Information Bureau reported that over 800 people rode in Jaipur on one Sunday in June 2026, in the presence of state minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, as part of rides organised across Rajasthan and Gujarat by the Sports Authority of India. Watch the Fit India channels for upcoming Jaipur venues.
If you searched for a cycling tour in Jaipur, guided heritage rides exist too. Outlook Traveller described Cyclin’ Jaipur’s early-morning tours of about three hours, including a Royal Trail of about 20 km towards Amber. Check current routes and prices with the operator, since that report dates from 2018.
Road safety for cyclists in Jaipur: the 2023 numbers
Jaipur’s roads are among the most dangerous of India’s big cities. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ Road Accidents in India 2023 data, published by OpenCity, records 849 road deaths in Jaipur in 2023, up from 765 in 2022, and ranks Jaipur third among India’s million-plus cities for road deaths. Two-wheeler riders were half of those killed.
| Road user | Deaths in 2023 | Share of Jaipur’s total |
|---|---|---|
| Two-wheeler riders | 422 | 50% |
| Pedestrians | 185 | 22% |
| Car, taxi and van occupants | 126 | 15% |
| Truck and lorry occupants | 52 | 6% |
| Cyclists | 5 | under 1% |
| All road users | 849 | 100% |
Only five cyclist deaths doesn’t mean Jaipur’s roads are safe for bikes; it fits the CUTS observation that few people ride outside the early morning. Ride the way locals who stay safe do:
- Ride early. Be off the main roads by about 8 AM on weekdays, when traffic builds.
- Use lights and a helmet, front and rear lights even at dawn, and a bright top in winter haze.
- Avoid the arteries (Tonk Road, Ajmer Road, Jhotwara Road) for training, and don’t try to use flyovers.
- Descend slowly from Nahargarh. Watch for gravel, animals and vehicles coming up blind bends.
- Ride in a group on any ride out of the city.
Best months for cycling in Jaipur
Jaipur’s cycling season runs from about October to March. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 show average highs of 41.1 °C in May and 39.7 °C in June, against 22.5 °C in January. Winter mornings are cold, with average lows of 8.4 °C in January, so the best rides in December and January start after sunrise rather than before it. The monsoon is short: July and August bring about 190 mm and 203 mm of rain.
| Months | Average high / low | Rain | How to ride |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov–Feb | 22.5–29.6 °C / 8.4–14.4 °C | Under 11 mm a month | Best season; layer up for cold starts |
| Mar and Oct | 32.0–34.1 °C / 17.4–20.1 °C | 4–19 mm | Good before 9 AM |
| Apr–Jun | 37.6–41.1 °C / 22.8–27.9 °C | 7–62 mm | Finish by 8 AM, or train indoors |
| Jul–Sep | 32.7–34.8 °C / 24.0–26.2 °C | 80–203 mm | Humid; ride between showers, watch for flooded underpasses |
From first ride to a 50 km Jaipur club ride: an 8-week build
Jaipur Cycling Club’s typical Sunday of 40–50 km is a realistic first goal for a new rider in Jaipur, and the October-to-March season gives you time to build up to it. Start in October, when highs fall to about 34 °C, and you can be ready for a club ride by December, in the coolest and driest part of the year. Ride three times a week: two short weekday rides before work and one longer weekend ride.
| Weeks | Weekday rides (twice) | Weekend ride | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 30 minutes, easy | 15–20 km | Roads around Central Park and JLN Marg |
| 3–4 | 40 minutes, with 4 × 2 minutes harder | 25–30 km | Out to Amer (11 km) and back |
| 5–6 | 45 minutes, with one short hill session | 35–40 km | Amer and back with a detour, or a first club ride at the back of the group |
| 7 | 45 minutes, easy | 45 km | With the group, at conversation pace |
| 8 | 30 minutes, easy | 50 km club ride | Eat breakfast, carry two bottles, start rested |
A Sunday ride out to Amer is the classic first goal. Amer is 11 km from Jaipur, and the fort sits on a hill above Maota Lake, with Jaigarh higher still on the same ridge. Leave by sunrise, turn around at the lake, and you’re home before the tourist buses and the heat arrive.
Training for the Nahargarh climb and Jaipur’s long rides
Most of a Jaipur weekend ride is flat, then the Nahargarh road asks for a long, steady climb. To get better at both, ride easy for most of the week and add one short hill session: three to five repeats of a few minutes on the steepest stretch you can find, coasting down between them. Off the bike, two strength sessions a week protect your knees and back. Our national guide to cycling for weight loss covers the full plan; here are the four moves that matter most for Jaipur riders.
- 1
Bulgarian split squats, 3 × 8 each leg
Single-leg strength for standing climbs on the Nahargarh road.
- 2
Glute bridges, 3 × 12
Strong glutes take load off the knees on long climbs.
- 3
Dead bugs, 3 × 10 each side
A stable trunk keeps your lower back comfortable on 50 km club rides.
- 4
Thoracic rotations and hip-flexor stretches, 1 minute each
Undoes the hunched riding position after a long Sunday.
