Cycling routes in Lucknow at a glance
Lucknow is almost perfectly flat, which makes it an easy city to start cycling in and a hard one to train climbing in. Most riding happens in and around Gomti Nagar, where the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) built its big parks and the riverfront, and at the 1090 Chauraha, where group rides and long-distance brevets set off. Beyond the city, the highways to Kanpur and Raebareli carry the weekend rides. Here is what we could verify, with the source for each in the list at the end (checked October 2026):
| Route or place | Distance | Riding conditions | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Janeshwar Mishra Park, Gomti Nagar Extension | Track length not published; park about 376 acres | Separate cycling track, no motor traffic | Beginners, children, steady laps |
| Gomti riverfront, Gomti Nagar | Project of about 8 km, both banks | Cycle tracks beside walkways; busy in the evening | Easy morning spins |
| Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, Unnao | About 43 km each way on NH-25 | Highway shoulder with heavy traffic; 2.6 km cycle trail inside | A winter half-day ride for fit riders |
| 1090 Chauraha to Raebareli and back (Lucknow Randonneurs 2021 route) | 200 km round trip | National highways via Mohanlalganj and Bachhrawan | Experienced endurance riders |
Cycling park in Lucknow: Janeshwar Mishra Park
When people in Lucknow search for a cycling park, they usually mean Janeshwar Mishra Park in Gomti Nagar Extension. The LDA, which runs it, gives its area as about 376 acres, and it opened in August 2014. The park was laid out with separate cycling and jogging tracks around the perimeter and through the middle, kept apart from the pedestrian paths, so you can ride steadily without weaving between walkers. Three artificial lakes, the largest about 40–45 acres, sit inside, and the north edge runs along the Lucknow–Faizabad railway line, with the Gomti plains to the south.
No official length for the cycling track is published, so record your first lap on a phone or bike computer and use that number afterwards. It is the safest place in Lucknow to teach a child to ride, to get back on a bicycle after years away, or to do structured efforts with no traffic: for example, five hard minutes and three easy, repeated four times, which is hard to do on Lucknow’s roads. Weekends and evenings are the busiest times, so for training, go early.
The Gomti riverfront: Lucknow’s cycle track by the river
The Gomti riverfront project in Gomti Nagar runs for about 8 km and includes walkways, cycle tracks, benches, greenery and lighting on both banks of the Gomti. It is the nearest thing Lucknow has to a cycle track through the city. Because it is shared with walkers, and the riverside road draws big evening crowds, use it for easy riding in the early morning rather than for fast efforts. Combined with Janeshwar Mishra Park, it gives a Gomti Nagar rider an hour or more of riding with little time on main roads.
What happened to Lucknow’s 35 km of road cycle tracks
Lucknow once had a cycle track network along its main roads. According to a National Herald report of 21 November 2017, the Public Works Department built a 35 km stretch of cycle tracks along Lucknow’s arterial roads at a cost of ₹31 crore, inaugurated in 2015, and Lucknow and Noida together had over 100 km. In 2017 the new state government decided to demolish the tracks, with the urban development minister saying they lay unused and had been encroached on, causing congestion.
For a rider in 2026, the practical meaning is simple: outside the parks and the riverfront, plan to share the road with traffic. Choose routes with wide service lanes, ride early before the rush, and treat any stretch of separated track you do find as a bonus rather than a route you can rely on end to end.
A weekend ride from Lucknow: Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary
The classic half-day ride out of Lucknow is south-west to Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary (renamed Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary) in Unnao district. The Uttar Pradesh Eco-Tourism Board puts it about 43 km from Lucknow on NH-25, the Lucknow–Kanpur highway, near Nawabganj town. The sanctuary covers about 224.6 hectares, and inside it has a 2.6 km cycle trail, nature trails, a watchtower, an interpretation centre and a cafeteria, which makes it a natural turnaround point.
- Go in winter. The Eco-Tourism Board names November to February as the best time to visit, when migratory birds are in; they leave by the second week of March. That is also Lucknow’s coolest riding weather.
- Respect the highway. A round trip is about 86 km, much of it on a busy national highway with trucks and buses. Ride single file, start at first light, wear bright clothing and use lights front and rear.
- Check entry rules first. The board’s page doesn’t list timings or fees; it gives the Divisional Manager, Ecotourism, on 0522-2358950 for those details.
- Have a back-up. The nearest railway station, Kusumbi, is about 2 km from the sanctuary, and Nawabganj bus stop about 1 km, which helps if a puncture or tired legs end the ride early.
Cycling events and cycling groups in Lucknow
Lucknow’s cycling events are mostly community rides rather than races, and the 1090 Chauraha is where many of them start. These are the ones we could confirm from official or news sources:
| Event or group | What it is | Latest confirmed detail |
|---|---|---|
| Fit India Sundays on Cycle | A national Sunday ride campaign run by the sports ministry | The Union sports minister led it in Lucknow on 23 March 2025, riding 3 km with more than 400 cyclists |
| World Bicycle Day rally | Rally by the Lucknow Cycling Association and the Paidal Yatri Cycle Sangathan | Held at the 1090 crossing in June 2025 |
| Lucknow Randonneurs | Lucknow’s club for long, self-supported brevets under Audax India Randonneurs | A 150 km ride listed for 1 November 2026, starting 5:30 AM in Lucknow |
| Lucknow Randonneurs 200 BRM | A 200 km brevet to Raebareli and back | Run on 7 November 2021 from 1090 Chauraha at 5:40 AM |
Randonneuring is the long end of Lucknow cycling. Audax India Randonneurs describes it as non-competitive, long-distance endurance riding over brevets of 200, 300, 400, 600 and 1,000 km, where self-sufficiency is essential. The Lucknow Randonneurs’ 2021 200 km route left 1090 Chauraha on NH-30 through Mohanlalganj, Bachhrawan and Raebareli, joined NH-31 towards Salon, turned at Suchi and came back the same way. If you want to build up to a brevet, a few months of steady riding at Janeshwar Mishra Park and a couple of Nawabganj round trips are a good start.
Recreational groups change often and many organise their rides on WhatsApp, so the most reliable way to find a cycling club in Lucknow is to turn up at one of the events above and ask riders there. We couldn’t confirm a public bike-share scheme running in Lucknow in October 2026, so plan on riding your own bicycle.
Best months for cycling in Lucknow

| November | 29.0 °C | 0.4 | The best month: dry roads, mild mornings |
| December and January | 23.6 °C and 21.4 °C | 0.5 and 1.7 | Cool and dry, but fog is common from mid-December to late January |
| February and March | 26.2 °C and 32.2 °C | 1.4 and 1.1 | Very good riding; finish long rides before noon by March |
| April to June | 38.2 °C, 39.9 °C, 38.3 °C | 0.7, 2.0, 5.1 | Ride at dawn only, and carry plenty of water |
| July and August | 34.2 °C and 33.4 °C | 11.8 and 10.6 | Wet roads, potholes hidden under water; short rides or indoor training |
| September and October | 33.4 °C and 32.8 °C | 7.2 and 1.4 | September is still wet; October dries out |
Strength and mobility for Lucknow riders
Flat Lucknow roads mean long stretches in one position, which tends to tighten hips and load the lower back and neck. Two short strength sessions a week help: squats or split squats for the legs, hip bridges, rows and planks for the trunk, and hip-flexor and upper-back mobility to undo the riding position. The full plan, and how much riding helps with weight loss, is in our guide to cycling for weight loss. The July and August rains are a good time to do more of this indoors.
If you train at home, personal home training in Lucknow works with a mat and a band. If you ride with friends, a weekly group class in Lucknow keeps the whole group doing its strength work. Many riders also run on their off days: see the running tracks in Lucknow, or the Lucknow marathon guide if you are thinking about a race.
