Ludhiana, India's cycle capital: what the industry numbers say
Cycling in Ludhiana starts with a paradox. The city is the centre of India's bicycle industry: a June 2024 report in The Tribune put Ludhiana's share at 75% of the country's bicycle production and 92% of bicycle parts, with more than 60,000 bicycles leaving its units every day. A July 2025 Tribune report on exports went further, saying about 90% of India's bicycle output originates in Ludhiana, from an industry with an annual turnover of about ₹12,000 crore. Wikipedia describes the city as Asia's largest bicycle manufacturing hub. The estimates differ because they come from different industry bodies and years, but they agree on the main point: most bicycles sold in India are built here.
| Figure | Value | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Share of India's bicycle production | 75% | The Tribune, June 2024 |
| Share of India's bicycle production | About 90% | The Tribune, July 2025 |
| Share of India's bicycle parts | 92% | The Tribune, June 2024 |
| Bicycles made a day | More than 60,000 | The Tribune, June 2024 |
| Annual industry turnover | About ₹12,000 crore | The Tribune, July 2025 |
| Export business | About ₹3,500 crore a year | The Tribune, July 2025 |
| Manufacturing units | Nearly 5,000 | Ludhiana Tribune, June 2026 |
The city that builds the bikes is hard to ride in, and the industry says so itself. In a World Bicycle Day report on 4 June 2026, headlined “Country's cycle capital Ludhiana ‘trackless’”, the Ludhiana Tribune found residents hesitant to pedal on congested, potholed roads. Avon Cycles' CMD Onkar Singh Pahwa told the paper that children's fancy cycles dominate sales at home and that demand for geared cycles stays low because city roads don't suit them, while overseas markets that buy geared bikes have the infrastructure. A former president of the United Cycle Parts Manufacturers Association said the upright roadster now makes up only 25–30% of production, mostly supplied through government tenders for schoolgirls.
Is there a cycling track in Ludhiana? Every track and what state it is in
Ludhiana has two dedicated cycle tracks that riders can actually use, and both are built for leisure rather than commuting: one along the Sidhwan Canal and one inside Rakh Bagh, according to the Tribune's June 2026 report. Two Smart City tracks on city roads have been lost to parking, and several planned tracks never arrived. Here is the full list as local reporting describes it.
| Track or venue | What it is | What reporters found | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sidhwan Canal track | Dedicated track beside the canal | One of the city's only two dedicated tracks; designed for leisure (June 2026) | Easy early-morning spins |
| Rakh Bagh | Track inside the Rakh Bagh park | The other dedicated leisure track (June 2026) | Short loops, children learning to ride |
| Model Town Extension Road | 1.6 km Smart City track, started in 2021 under the Cycle for Change Challenge | Overgrown, school buses and vans parked on it; a rider called it too short (May 2025) | Not reliable |
| Malhar Road | Smart City track on both sides of the road | Used as parking, with showrooms running valet service on it (May 2025, June 2026) | Not usable |
| PAU velodrome | Track-cycling venue at Punjab Agricultural University | Hosted the 2005 Asian Cycling Championships; riders say regular access is hard (June 2026) | Track racing, if you get access |
| Focal Point, Dugri to South City, Ferozepur Road | Planned or proposed tracks | Focal Point track for workers collapsed; Dugri–South City never took off; Ferozepur Road has space but no project (June 2026) | Nothing yet |
The PAU velodrome deserves a note of its own. Punjab Agricultural University's velodrome hosted the Asian Cycling Championships from 11 to 18 December 2005, and it is still the area's only dedicated cycling facility. On World Bicycle Day 2026, young riders from Ludhiana and neighbouring districts told the Tribune they struggle to get regular training time there. If you are a junior racer, ask your district cycling association or coach about access rather than turning up at the gate.
Where Ludhiana's cyclists actually ride
Because the tracks are short or blocked, most Ludhiana cyclists ride on ordinary roads early in the morning and again in the evening. A June 2025 Tribune feature followed one of them: a 43-year-old businessman who wakes at 5 AM, rides to the Punjab Agricultural University campus for nearly an hour, does some light exercise and rides home, then repeats the ride around 7 PM. The same report noted that most riders use main roads, which it called a real accident risk, and pictured members of the Ludhiana Pedallers Club. In June 2026 Ranjodh Singh of the club told the paper that new colonies shouldn't be approved until they include cycle tracks.
Organised rides do happen. In May 2026 the SAI Training Centre in Ludhiana, with the GST and Customs Department, ran a Fit India Sundays on Cycle ride under the Union sports ministry: a 10 km loop from the SAI centre to the GST office and back, with at least a hundred cyclists, the Tribune reported. Rides like this, and club rides, are the safest way to cover distance in Ludhiana because a group is visible and moves at a steady pace.
- Ride at first light. Roads are at their quietest before shops open and school buses and factory shifts start moving.
- Use the canal track and Rakh Bagh for drills. They are short, but they are traffic-free places to practise cadence work, standing climbs and bike handling.
- Join a group for longer rides. Ask at a cycle shop or follow a local club; a group ride gives you company, pace and safety in numbers.
- Keep a plan for bad-air and fog days. An indoor session at home or a gym exercise bike keeps the week on track when riding outside isn't sensible.
How safe is cycling in Ludhiana? The 2023 road-death figures
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' figures for India's million-plus cities, published as open data by OpenCity, show 504 road accidents and 402 deaths in Ludhiana in 2023, up from 467 accidents and 364 deaths in 2022. That put Ludhiana 12th among large Indian cities for road deaths. Of the 402 people killed, 32 were cyclists. Pedestrians and people on two-wheelers made up most of the rest, which tells you who shares the road edge with you.
| Road user | Deaths in 2023 | Share of 402 |
|---|---|---|
| Two-wheeler riders | 187 | 47% |
| Pedestrians | 129 | 32% |
| Cyclists | 32 | 8% |
| Cars, taxis, vans and light vehicles | 32 | 8% |
| Other non-motorised, including e-rickshaws | 10 | 2% |
| Auto-rickshaws | 6 | 1% |
| Trucks and lorries | 6 | 1% |
Thirty-two deaths in a year is one cyclist killed roughly every eleven days, in a city where cycling is mostly recreation and short trips. That doesn't mean you shouldn't ride; it means you ride with lights, a helmet and a route that avoids the busiest stretches at peak hours. Front and rear lights matter most in December and January, when dense fog cuts visibility for drivers as well as for you.
Best months for cycling in Ludhiana: fog, heat, monsoon and smoke
Ludhiana's weather gives riders two good windows: February to March, and October into early November. The India Meteorological Department's 1991–2020 normals for Ludhiana airport show highs near 39°C in May and lows near 6°C in January, with most of the year's 791 mm of rain falling in July and August.
| Months | Average high / low | Rain | For riders |
|---|---|---|---|
| December–January | 17.9–20.9°C / 6.1–6.8°C | 9–28 mm a month | Fog on many mornings; ride later in the day with lights, or train indoors |
| February–March | 21.8–27.3°C / 8.7–13.0°C | 27–36 mm a month | The best window; build your longest rides here |
| April–June | 34.8–39.0°C / 18.2–26.1°C | 18–87 mm a month | Ride before 7 AM, keep it short, carry two bottles |
| July–September | 33.1–34.1°C / 23.5–26.6°C | 138–217 mm a month | Wet roads and waterlogging; shorter rides, more indoor work |
| October–November | 27.1–31.9°C / 11.2–17.3°C | Under 20 mm a month | Good temperatures, but check air quality when crop-residue smoke drifts in |
Buying a cycle in Ludhiana: geared bike, roadster or an exercise cycle
People in Ludhiana search for “cycle shop in Ludhiana”, “exercise cycle price in Ludhiana” and “gym cycle price in Ludhiana”, and the city is the right place to buy. Prices depend on the brand, frame and gearing, so compare a few shops rather than relying on any figure online. For fitness riding, three choices make sense here:
- A hybrid or a simple geared bike for road rides and the canal track. Ludhiana is flat, so you don't need many gears; a few help with headwinds and longer rides.
- The roadster you may already own is heavy but fine for short, steady rides. Check tyre pressure and brakes, and add lights.
- An exercise cycle (“gym cycle”) at home is a practical buy in this city, because fog, smoke and monsoon rain take weeks out of the outdoor season. Pair it with strength work so your plan isn't only cardio.
A strength and mobility week for Ludhiana riders
Riding builds your heart and legs, but not much else. Riders who add two short strength sessions a week tend to hold their position better, protect their lower back and keep muscle while losing fat. Our national guide to cycling for weight loss explains the reasons; here is how a week can look in Ludhiana, fitted around shop hours and the weather.
- 1
Monday, 6 AM: strength at home
Split squats, glute bridges, one-arm rows with a water can or dumbbell, and a side plank. About 40 minutes, done before the shop opens.
- 2
Wednesday, dawn: an easy ride
45–60 minutes at a pace where you can talk, using the canal track for a few short, faster efforts.
- 3
Friday, evening: strength and mobility
Step-ups, Romanian deadlifts, push-ups, then hip-flexor and upper-back stretches for riders who spend hours hunched over handlebars.
- 4
Sunday, early: the long ride
A group or club ride, building by about 10% a week in February and March. In fog, smoke or heavy rain, ride the exercise cycle instead.
If fat loss is the goal, the ride is only half of it. Use the calorie deficit calculator to set a sensible target, and see our guide to healthy food in Ludhiana for saag, makki di roti and dhaba meals with calories and protein. Most people losing fat steadily lose about 0.5–1 kg a week.
