Cycling in Delhi on Sunday: where to start

Choose a ride that fits your starting point and available time.

Delhi is a hard city to ride on a weekday. Traffic is heavy, the air is poor for much of the winter, and May afternoons pass 39 °C. Sunday mornings are different. Roads are emptier, a government-run group ride starts beside India Gate every week, and the broad avenues of central Delhi are some of the most rideable streets in north India. If you are new to cycling in Delhi, start there and build out.

Cycling events in Delhi by the government: Fit India Sundays on Cycle

The best-known cycling event in Delhi is a government one. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched Fit India Sundays on Cycle in December 2024, and the Delhi edition starts at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, at the eastern end of the India Gate lawns. The 73rd edition on 10 May 2026 drew more than 800 riders, including 60 members of the armed forces, and was run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the Cycling Federation of India, the Raahgiri Foundation and others. Across India, the ministry counts more than 28 lakh participants at more than 2.63 lakh locations since the launch.

It is a relaxed social ride, not a race, with fitness activities such as Zumba, yoga and rope skipping around it. That makes it a good first group ride if you have only ridden alone. Start times and registration details change edition to edition, so check Fit India’s announcements the week before. Bring your own bicycle and helmet.

Cycling at India Gate and on Kartavya Path

Most searches for cycling in Delhi at India Gate are really about the Central Vista: the boulevard from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, renamed Kartavya Path, which is about 3 km long. Its redevelopment, inaugurated in September 2022, added wide footpaths, pedestrian underpasses, more trees and new bridges over the canals. A ride from India Gate up to the Vijay Chowk end and back is about 6 km, and the gentle climb towards Raisina Hill is the only incline in central Delhi worth the name.

  • Go early. The Central Vista fills with walkers and tourists from mid-morning, especially on weekends and holidays.
  • Expect closures in January. The Republic Day parade on 26 January uses Kartavya Path, and Beating the Retreat is held at Vijay Chowk on 29 January, so plan for restricted access around those dates.
  • Share the space. The footpaths were built for pedestrians. Ride on the road, keep your speed social, and give way to walkers at crossings.

Raahgiri and car-free streets in Delhi

Delhi has tried car-free Sundays before. Raahgiri Day, which closed streets to motor traffic on Sunday mornings, started in Gurugram in November 2013 and came to Connaught Place in July 2014. WRI India, which helped run it, says the idea spread to more than 50 cities, but in Delhi it did not become a lasting weekly fixture. Today the Raahgiri Foundation is one of the partners behind Fit India Sundays on Cycle, so the National Stadium ride is the closest thing Delhi has to a regular car-free Sunday for cyclists.

Riding the Delhi Ridge and the south Delhi Aravallis

The Delhi Ridge, a northern extension of the Aravalli range, runs about 35 km from Tughlaqabad to Wazirabad. Its southern section, around Asola Bhatti on the Haryana border, is the biggest and least built-up part, at about 6,200 hectares, and the roads around it give Delhi riders their only real hills. These roads carry trucks and fast traffic, and much of the Ridge is notified reserve forest, so stick to public roads: this is a road ride for confident cyclists, not a mountain-bike playground. For walking trails in the same forest, see our guide to treks near Delhi.

Is cycling in Delhi safe? Traffic numbers and habits

Plan the route, check conditions and prepare what you need before heading out.
Plan the route, check conditions and prepare what you need before heading out.

Delhi’s roads are dangerous for anyone not inside a car. The Delhi Traffic Police reports 1,551 road deaths in the city in 2024. It doesn’t publish a cyclist breakdown on its road-safety page, but its own guidance is clear: wear a helmet on a motorcycle or a bicycle, and wear bright or reflective clothing at night.

  • Ride early. Sunday from first light to about 8 AM is the safest window, with the lowest traffic and the coolest air.
  • Light up. Delhi’s winter fog cuts visibility sharply, especially in December and January. Use a white front light and a red rear light even at dawn.
  • Pick wide roads with space. The central Delhi avenues around India Gate are calmer than the ring roads and arterial roads. Avoid flyovers, which have no space for cyclists.
  • Teach children off the road first. The Delhi Traffic Police’s Roshanara Bagh Traffic Training Park runs safe cycling and pedestrian drills for schools.

Smog, GRAP and the Delhi cycling calendar

Air quality decides more Delhi rides than traffic does. The Commission for Air Quality Management’s Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) switches on restrictions across the NCR as the AQI climbs. It doesn’t ban cycling, but the stages are a useful signal for when a hard outdoor ride stops making sense.

GRAP stageAQIWhat we’d do
Stage I, ‘poor’201–300Short, easy rides only; move intervals indoors
Stage II, ‘very poor’301–400Ride indoors on a trainer, or do a strength session instead
Stage III, ‘severe’401–450No outdoor exercise; strength and mobility indoors
Stage IV, ‘severe+’Above 450No outdoor exercise; keep indoor sessions moderate
GRAP stages and what they mean for a Delhi ride

Those bad days are common. A CREA analysis of CPCB monitoring data found Delhi averaged 163 µg/m³ of PM2.5 between 1 October 2025 and 28 February 2026, the third-worst city in India, against a national standard of 40 and a WHO guideline of 5. Of those 151 days, 18 were ‘severe’, 87 ‘very poor’ and 24 ‘poor’; only 22 were moderate or better. Heat narrows the calendar from the other side.

Bike-share, clubs and getting a bike in Delhi

Delhi has had public bicycle-sharing schemes and private app-based cycle rentals over the years, but we couldn’t confirm a city-run pedal bike-share operating at scale in October 2026, so don’t plan your training around one. Buy or borrow a bike that fits you. Cycling groups in Delhi mostly organise through Instagram and WhatsApp: search your area with “cycling group” and look for clubs that publish a ride pace and route. A first ride with Fit India Sundays on Cycle is a low-pressure way to meet regular riders.

Strength and mobility for Delhi cyclists

Delhi’s cycling season has holes in it: smog weeks in winter and heatwaves in May. Use those weeks for strength work, which keeps your legs and back ready for when the air clears. Twice a week, this 25-minute routine covers what riders need most; our national guide on cycling for weight loss explains how to fit riding and strength together.

  1. 1

    Goblet squats, 3 × 10

Quads and glutes for pushing the pedals, and for the climb up to Raisina Hill.

  2. 2

    Single-leg Romanian deadlifts, 3 × 8 each leg

Hamstrings and balance; fixes the imbalance most riders have between legs.

  3. 3

    Glute bridges, 3 × 12

Wakes up the hips that sitting at a desk and on a saddle switch off.

  4. 4

    Dead bugs, 3 × 8 each side

Core control so your lower back doesn’t ache after an hour in the saddle.

  5. 5

Hip flexor and thoracic stretches, 5 minutes

Opens up the hunched riding position, especially after a week at a desk.
