Cycling in Udaipur: lakes, low hills and very early starts
Udaipur is a good city to ride a bicycle for one reason above all: its lakes. Fateh Sagar and Pichola sit at around 578 m, ringed by roads that are flat, scenic and quiet at dawn, and the Aravalli hills rise straight out of them for anyone who wants to climb. What the city lacks is infrastructure. We found no dedicated, continuous cycle track and no running public bike-share scheme in October 2026, so Udaipur cycling means lake roads before the traffic, club rides into the countryside, and the occasional hill. The routes below are the ones local riders actually use.
| Route | Distance | Terrain | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fateh Sagar circuit: the pal, Rani Road, Moti Magri Road | About 8.5 km of shoreline | Flat, some short rises on the west bank | First rides, intervals, recovery spins |
| Chetak Circle to Badi Lake and back to Fateh Sagar | About 45 km (club route) | Rolling, through the hills west of the city | A weekly long ride |
| Sajjangarh sanctuary road to the Monsoon Palace | About 5 km west of the city, then the climb | Steady climb to 944 m | Hill repeats and climbing strength |
| Udaipur to Nathdwara via the Chirwa tunnel | 48 km each way | Highway; rolling | Experienced riders, early starts |
| Udaipur to Gomti and back (200 km brevet) | 200 km | Highway out and back | Audax randonneurs |
Cycling at Fateh Sagar Lake: Udaipur’s first loop
Almost everyone who searches for cycling in Udaipur ends up at Fateh Sagar. The lake is 2.4 km long and 1.6 km wide, with about 8.5 km of shoreline, and the pal, also called the Drive or Connaught Bund, runs along its north-eastern side. Rani Road, Moti Magri Road, Fateh Sagar Drive and the walled road on the eastern shore link up into a complete circuit. The masonry dam that Maharana Fateh Singh rebuilt in 1889 forms the straight stretch along the pal, with an 800 m overflow section.
Ride it between first light and about 7:30 AM. By evening the pal is Udaipur’s promenade, crowded with walkers, food stalls and parked scooters, and a bicycle is more of a hazard than a workout. In the morning the same circuit is ideal for structured training: one steady lap to warm up, then efforts along the pal and easy riding through the curves on the western side. Two or three laps make a solid weekday hour.
Udaipur Cycling Club: the 45 km Badi Lake ride and longer
The easiest way into Udaipur’s cycling scene is Udaipur Cycling Club. An August 2022 feature in Outlook Traveller describes a club formed in 2015 with more than 120 active members, the youngest 8 and the oldest 70. Its regular ride starts at about 5:30 AM in front of a mall near Chetak Circle, heads out to Badi Lake, and finishes at Fateh Sagar, where the group typically stops for masala chai by Rani Road. That loop is about 45 km; a handful of riders at the start had grown to about 25 by the finish on the morning described.
The same article says the club can arrange bicycles free of charge for newcomers, that anyone can join if they wear a helmet and ride with group discipline, and that night rides of 100–200 km are common, with some members preparing for 500 km events. The club also runs official brevets: Audax India Randonneurs lists a 200 km BRM it organised on 3 November 2019, starting at 6 AM from the Mahakal temple in Fatehpura and running through the Chirwa tunnel and Nathdwara to a turnaround at Gomti, for a ₹500 entry fee. Searches for night cycling in Udaipur usually lead to these group night rides; don’t ride the highways alone after dark.
Climbing to Sajjangarh: Udaipur’s hill test on two wheels
For climbing, Udaipur has one obvious target. The Monsoon Palace sits on Bansdara peak at 944 m, about 340 m above Lake Pichola, reached by a winding road through Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary, about 5 km west of the city. Few climbs near a Rajasthani city are this sustained. Outlook Traveller listed the sanctuary entry at ₹30 and the palace ticket at ₹110 for Indians in July 2024, with about ₹305 extra to take a vehicle up, and the sanctuary closes at sunset and has been listed as shut on Tuesdays.
We couldn’t find a published rule on bicycles inside the sanctuary, so ask at the gate first. If you ride it, go up seated in an easy gear and keep your speed well down on the descent, with both brakes checked beforehand: the bends are tight and cars use the same road. Badi Lake, about 12 km from the city behind the hills, is the gentler alternative for a rolling ride with a view.
Is there a cycle track or bike share in Udaipur?
Not one we could confirm. ICLEI South Asia, which advised Udaipur under its Smart Cities work, reported that the Udaipur Municipal Corporation was working towards a public bike-sharing scheme, in talks with Ola, Tech Mahindra (the Smart City’s ITS integrator) and the bike-share company MYBYK, and was preparing a draft document for private operators, including where to put docking stations. We found no evidence that the scheme is running in October 2026. For now, residents ride their own bicycles, and visitors hire one locally or join a guided ride.
Best months for cycling in Udaipur
Outlook Traveller’s feature names October to February as the ideal riding season, and India Meteorological Department normals for Udaipur airport (1991–2020) explain why. May averages a high of 40.2 °C with lows near 26 °C, so even dawn rides are warm. The monsoon brings about 236 mm in July and 205 mm in August. Winter mornings are cold enough for a light jacket on the descent from Sajjangarh.
| Month | High / low | Rain | Riding window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec–Jan | 24.5–26.0 °C / 7.6–8.8 °C | Under 3 mm | 7–10 AM; layer up for descents |
| Feb–Mar | 27.9–33.6 °C / 10.3–15.6 °C | About 2 mm | Sunrise to 9 AM; the best long-ride weeks |
| Apr–Jun | 37.5–40.2 °C / 21.1–26.4 °C | 8–77 mm | Before 7 AM, shorter rides, double the water |
| Jul–Sep | 30.5–32.2 °C / 22.0–24.9 °C | 112–236 mm | Between showers; wet roads and poor visibility |
| Oct–Nov | 29.8–33.4 °C / 13.0–17.8 °C | 5–14 mm | Early starts; the riding season opens |
Riding safely around Udaipur’s lakes and highways
- Wear a helmet every time. Udaipur Cycling Club makes it a condition of joining its rides.
- Use lights front and rear for 5:30 AM starts, which are in the dark for much of the winter.
- Avoid the pal and old-city lanes in the evening, when tourist traffic, autos and pedestrians fill them.
- Ride highway routes in a group. The Nathdwara road carries heavy vehicles; brevets run with support and rules for a reason.
- Carry two bottles from March to June. Dry heat on the lake roads empties one bottle in under an hour.
From a Fateh Sagar lap to the club’s 45 km ride: an 8-week build
If you can ride one lap of Fateh Sagar comfortably today, eight weeks is enough to sit in with the Badi Lake group. The plan adds distance gradually and pairs every week with two short strength sessions, which protect knees and back far better than extra miles. Our guide to cycling for weight loss explains how to fit riding into a fat-loss week.
| Weeks | Weekday rides | Weekend ride | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Two rides of 2 laps, easy | 3 laps (about 25 km) | Squats, glute bridges, planks |
| 3–4 | Two rides of 2–3 laps, last lap faster | Fateh Sagar to Badi Lake and back | Add split squats and rows |
| 5–6 | One lap session with 4 × 3-minute efforts on the pal | 35 km rolling loop with the club or a friend | Heavier split squats, side planks |
| 7 | Two easy rides, one short climb towards Sajjangarh | The full 45 km club route | One lighter session |
| 8 | Easy spins only | Ride with Udaipur Cycling Club | Mobility only |
- 1
Bulgarian split squat, 3 × 8 each leg
Builds the single-leg strength you use in every pedal stroke up the Sajjangarh road.
- 2
Glute bridge, 3 × 12
Wakes up the hips after a desk day, so the thighs don’t do all the work on climbs.
- 3
Bent-over row, 3 × 10
Supports the upper back through 45 km in a forward lean.
- 4
Hip-flexor and chest stretch, 60 seconds each
Undoes the riding position and helps a stiff lower back after long Sundays.
