Cycling places in Ahmedabad at a glance
Ahmedabad is flat, which makes it an easy city to start cycling in, but it has few roads where a cyclist is separated from traffic. Most riders use one of three things: the Sabarmati Riverfront for traffic-free laps, a public bike share cycle for short trips, or an early-morning group ride out of the city on the highways. The table sums up what each offers, using figures from the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation (SRFDCL), the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Audax India (checked October 2026).
| Place or option | Distance | Good for | Check before you go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sabarmati Riverfront, east bank lower promenade | About 11.3 km | Traffic-free laps, beginners, families | Listed hours 9 AM–9 PM |
| Sabarmati Riverfront, west bank lower promenade | About 11.2 km | Linking with the east bank for a longer loop | Listed hours 9 AM–9 PM |
| Riverfront Phase II (under development) | Adds 5.8 km east and 5.2 km west | Longer runs along the river once open | Which sections are open |
| MYBYK / Amdabike public bike share | Short hops between BRTS stops | Trying cycling without buying a bike | Current plans in the MYBYK app |
| Brevets and club rides from Sindhu Bhavan Road | 200–600 km routes out of the city | Experienced riders building endurance | The Audax India calendar |
Cycling on the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad
If you searched for cycling on the riverfront in Ahmedabad, here is how it works. SRFDCL’s River Promenade page says the riverfront has two levels on each bank. The lower promenade, built just above the water, is meant for pedestrians and cyclists, with concrete paving that the corporation says supports walking, jogging and cycling. The promenade is 6–18 m wide, with staircases and ramps down from the road level at regular intervals and under every bridge, plus lifts for people with disabilities. SRFDCL lists the east bank at 11.3 km and the west bank at 11.2 km, and describes the promenade as “nearly 11.5 km” overall per bank.
Two practical points. First, SRFDCL lists both promenades as open 9 AM to 9 PM, which is later than most cyclists want to start in Ahmedabad’s heat. Check the current timing at the access point you plan to use before building a dawn routine around it. Second, the lower promenade is shared with walkers and joggers, and it gets busy on evenings and weekends. Ride at a steady, social pace, ring early and save hard efforts for quieter stretches or for a turbo trainer at home.
SRFDCL’s Phase II plan extends the riverfront by 5.8 km on the east bank and 5.2 km on the west, which would take the project from 23 km to 34 km. The corporation’s page describes the first tendered section and the planning work but gives no completion date, so treat the extension as future riding rather than a route you can use today.
Renting a cycle: MYBYK and the Amdabike bike share
Ahmedabad was early to public bike sharing. MYBYK, an Ahmedabad start-up, began in 2014 with 200 bicycles and four stations beside the BRTS, so bus riders could cycle the last stretch of their trip. The AMC’s Amdabike page says Smart City Ahmedabad Development Limited has permitted MYBYK to run the service, planned to start with 2,000 bicycles within a year at about 150 stations, focused on BRTS bus stops in the western part of the city. You unlock a cycle by scanning a QR code in the operator’s app, and pay by wallet or card, with the Janmitra Card also listed.
We couldn’t find a current official fare table, so check prices in the MYBYK app before you plan regular rides. A shared cycle is a good way to test whether you enjoy riding before buying a bike, and it is ideal for short, flat trips. For longer fitness rides, a cycle that fits you properly is worth the money.
Cycling events in Ahmedabad: Sundays on Cycle and car-free days
The most regular cycling event in Ahmedabad today is Fit India Sundays on Cycle, the national weekly ride run by the Sports Ministry. According to the Press Information Bureau, its 75th edition on 24 May 2026 was led from the Sabarmati Riverfront, where about 5,000 cyclists joined a 5 km rally. Venues change from week to week, so watch the Fit India and Sports Authority of India Gandhinagar channels for the next local ride.
Ahmedabad also has history with car-free streets. The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy reported that the AMC and the city’s traffic police closed CG Road to cars for a Sunday in 2009, with a cycle rally, skating and a morning run, the second such event after one the year before. We found no sign of a regular car-free Sunday on CG Road in 2026, so check local news before you go looking for one.
Cycling clubs and group rides in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad’s club scene is strongest in long-distance riding. Cyclone Cycling Club has organised Audax India brevets (timed, self-supported rides of 200 km and more) from Gotila Garden on Sindhu Bhavan Road, with 6 AM starts. Past routes include a 300 km ride along the Ahmedabad–Vadodara highway and a 600 km brevet heading north past Palanpur towards the Aravallis. Audax India lists every sanctioned brevet with its organiser, date and route map, which is the most reliable way to find current rides.
For shorter social rides, most cycling groups in Ahmedabad organise on WhatsApp and Instagram rather than on websites. Search for your neighbourhood (Bopal, Satellite, Gota, Chandkheda) with “cycling group”, and ask the staff at a cycle shop near you which groups ride on weekend mornings.
How safe is cycling on Ahmedabad’s roads? The numbers
Ahmedabad’s roads are risky for anyone outside a vehicle. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ Road Accidents in India 2023 data, published by OpenCity, records 535 road deaths in Ahmedabad in 2023, up from 488 in 2022. Of those, 26 were cyclists, about 5%, while pedestrians (236) and two-wheeler riders (222) made up most of the rest.
| Road user | Deaths in 2023 | Share of Ahmedabad’s total |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrians | 236 | 44% |
| Two-wheeler riders | 222 | 41% |
| Auto-rickshaw occupants | 28 | 5% |
| Cyclists | 26 | 5% |
| Car, taxi and van occupants | 18 | 3% |
| All road users | 535 | 100% |
- Wear a helmet and use lights, front and rear, even at dawn. Our national guide covers the evidence on helmets.
- Choose the riverfront or quiet society roads for training, and use main roads only early on weekend mornings.
- Ride in a group for any highway ride, and keep to the left edge with a clear line.
Which is the best time for cycling in Ahmedabad?
Heat sets Ahmedabad’s cycling calendar. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 show average highs of 41.8 °C in May and 39.7 °C in April, while January averages 27.9 °C by day and 12.4 °C at night. The monsoon is short but intense, with about 310 mm of rain in July and 242 mm in August.
| Months | Average high / low | Rain | How to ride |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov–Feb | 27.9–33.1 °C / 12.4–17.2 °C | Under 2 mm a month | Best season: long weekend rides and brevets |
| Mar–May | 35.8–41.8 °C / 19.6–27.3 °C | Under 6 mm a month | Finish by 8 AM, or train indoors |
| Jun–Sep | 32.3–39.0 °C / 24.9–27.7 °C | 84–310 mm a month | Ride between showers; watch for waterlogging |
| Oct | 35.6 °C / 21.8 °C | 13 mm | Heat returns; early starts only |
In practice, the best time of day for cycling in Ahmedabad is the first two hours after sunrise for most of the year. From March to June, a ride that starts at 6 AM is already warm by 8, so carry two bottles and keep efforts easy as the sun climbs.
Strength and mobility for Ahmedabad cyclists
Flat city riding works your legs in one small range of motion, hour after hour, and long brevets add hours bent over the bars. Two short strength sessions a week keep your hips, back and knees comfortable. Our national guide to cycling for weight loss covers sets, plans and calories in detail; this is the short version.
- 1
Goblet squats or step-ups, 3 × 10
Builds the quadriceps and glutes that drive the pedals, through a deeper range than cycling uses.
- 2
Hip hinges (Romanian deadlifts), 3 × 10
Strengthens the back of the body, which balances hours of pushing on the pedals.
- 3
Planks and side planks, 3 × 30 seconds
A stable trunk keeps your back comfortable on long rides out of the city.
- 4
Hip-flexor and chest stretches, 1 minute each
Opens the front of the body after time in a riding position.
