Where to cycle in Bangalore: routes by distance
Cycling in Bengaluru is a matter of timing and escape. The city sits at about 920 m, so mornings are mild, but the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) counts more than 54 lakh (5.4 million) vehicles on its roads. Riders deal with that in two ways: short loops in the few places where cars are kept out early in the day, and longer rides that get out of the city before traffic builds. Here are the routes Bengaluru riders actually use, with distances from official and reference sources.
| Route | Distance | What it’s like | Best time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cubbon Park, central | About 300 acres of avenues and paths | Flat, shaded avenues; designated cycling paths | 5–8 AM daily; Sundays and holidays, when internal roads are closed to vehicles |
| Hesaraghatta Lake, north-west | About 18 km from the city | Open roads around a 4.5 km² reservoir | Early morning, before trucks and weekend traffic |
| Nandi Hills, Chikkaballapur | About 60 km each way; summit 1,478 m | Long ride out, then a winding climb | Gate opens at 6 AM; go on a weekday |
| Cycle Day streets | One neighbourhood street, closed to cars | Car-free, family pace | Monthly, on the host community’s chosen day |
| Bangalore Randonneurs brevets | 200, 300, 400 and 600 km | Self-supported long-distance rides | Through the cooler months; 200 and 600 km events in late October and November 2026 |
Cubbon Park: Bangalore’s closest thing to a cycling track
If you searched for a cycling track in Bangalore, the most useful one is in Cubbon Park. Karnataka Tourism lists the park at about 300 acres, free to enter, with vehicle traffic restricted inside from 5 AM to 8 AM every day and several internal roads closed to vehicles entirely on Sundays and public holidays. Cycling is permitted on designated paths in the morning, and riders are asked to stay on marked routes and follow the signboards. The park’s general hours are 6 AM to 6 PM, and it is closed on Mondays and the second Tuesday of the month, so plan a Sunday ride rather than a Monday one.
Cubbon Park is the right place for a first ride, for children learning, or for a short spin before work. It is not the place for speed: the same avenues are full of walkers and runners at the same hours (see running tracks in Bangalore), so ride at a pace you could stop from in a few metres.
The Nandi Hills climb from Bengaluru
Nandi Hills is the ride every Bengaluru cyclist works towards. It is about 60 km from the city and about 10 km from Chikkaballapur, and the summit stands at 1,478 m, more than 500 m above Bengaluru’s 920 m. Karnataka Tourism describes the winding road up as popular with cyclists and as a challenging uphill ride. Riding there and back from the city makes about 120 km, so many riders drive to the base and only ride the climb.
- Opening hours: Karnataka Tourism lists the hill as open from 6 AM to 6 PM, with an entry ticket of about ₹10–20 per person (checked October 2026).
- Crowds: weekends are busy with cars and two-wheelers going up for sunrise. A weekday ride is calmer and safer on the hairpins.
- Weather: Karnataka Tourism notes that in the June to August monsoon the hill is misty and the roads can be slippery, which matters most on the descent.
- Access rules change: in March 2022, weekend visitors needed passes from the district administration, with caps on vehicles. Check the current rules before you ride.
Nandi Hills sits beside Skandagiri and the other hill treks of Chikkaballapur. If you like climbing on foot too, our guide to treks near Bangalore covers them.
Hesaraghatta: the northern ride out of the city
Hesaraghatta Lake, a reservoir built across the Arkavathy River in 1894 to supply Bengaluru’s water, is about 18 km north-west of the city and covers about 4.5 km². It makes a good first out-of-town goal for riders in the north of the city, far enough to feel like a real ride and close enough to be back before the traffic builds. The lake is also a bird area, with about 2,000 waterbirds of 29 species recorded and winter migrants such as harriers and spotted eagles, so an early ride in December or January is worth a pause at the water. Nrityagram, the Odissi dance village founded in 1990, is nearby.
Cycling events in Bangalore: Cycle Day and open streets
Bengaluru has India’s longest-running open-street event. According to DULT, Cycle Day began in 2013 and is held monthly, anchored by DULT as part of the Bengaluru Coalition for Open Streets. A resident welfare association or NGO closes a neighbourhood street to cars for a morning so people can ride, walk and play on it. Bigger open-street days have been held before, including at HSR Layout in September 2015 and on MG Road in February 2016.
Cycle Day also leads to permanent change. A street can become a DULT Slow Street, with a speed limit of about 15 km/h for all vehicles, once the community has held Cycle Day on it or a nearby street for at least three months. To find the next one, follow DULT and your local resident association, or propose your own street.
Renting a cycle in Bangalore, and taking it to the metro
People searching “cycling in Bangalore rent” usually want one of three things: a short hop, a weekend bike or lessons. Here is what we could verify (checked October 2026):
- Yulu runs shared, dockless low-speed electric two-wheelers in Bengaluru, with about 50,000 vehicles across its cities. Its Miracle model has a 250-watt motor and a 25 km/h top speed. It is handy for getting to and from a metro station (Yulu works with BMRCL, BBMP and DULT), but it is not a pedal bicycle, so it won’t give you a workout.
- Pedal Shaale is DULT’s free certified cycling course: about 10 hours over ten one-hour sessions, with cycles arranged at no cost. It is the best start for adults who never learned or want to ride confidently in traffic.
- For longer rides, local bicycle shops hire road and hybrid bikes by the day or weekend. Prices vary by shop and bike, so compare a few before you commit.
Cycling groups and clubs in Bangalore
Bengaluru has a large riding scene, and most groups organise on WhatsApp and Strava rather than websites. The one we could verify is Bangalore Randonneurs, the city’s club under Audax India Randonneurs, which runs non-competitive, self-supported long-distance rides (brevets) of 200, 300, 400, 600 km and longer, recognised by Audax Club Parisien. Its calendar for late 2026 lists a 600 km brevet starting on 30 October and a 200 km on 1 November, both at 6 AM from Bangalore. A 200 km brevet is a realistic first goal after a season of Nandi Hills rides.
For a multi-day goal, the Tour of Nilgiris, organised by Breakaway Sports, has run every December since 2008 over about 800–1,000 km in seven to eight days, with 85 riders in 2024. It is a serious test of climbing, best treated as a goal for a second or third season of riding.
Traffic safety for cyclists in Bengaluru
With 5.4 million vehicles on Bengaluru’s roads, cyclists share space with heavy traffic almost everywhere outside the parks. The World Health Organization’s July 2026 fact sheet notes that more than half of the world’s 1.16 million annual road deaths are vulnerable road users, which includes cyclists, and that every 1% rise in average speed raises the risk of a fatal crash by 4%. That is why speed matters more than anything else on a ride out of the city.
- Ride early on weekdays, before the commute builds on Outer Ring Road, Hosur Road and Bellary Road.
- Use a front light and a red rear light at dawn, and wear a helmet and bright colours.
- On the Nandi Hills descent, brake before the hairpins, not in them, and stay well left of buses and cars going up.
- Avoid flooded underpasses after evening storms: standing water hides potholes.
- On car-free Cycle Days and inside Cubbon Park, slow down for walkers and children.
Best months for cycling in Bengaluru
Bengaluru’s cycling year is set by its two rainy seasons. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 show about 1,078 mm of rain a year, with storms building from April and the wettest months from August to October.
| Months | Average high / low | Rain a month | What it means on the bike |
|---|---|---|---|
| December to February | 26.9–30.9 °C / 16.1–17.6 °C | 2–15 mm | Best riding: dry roads and cool mornings; bring a light layer for the Nandi Hills descent |
| March to May | 33.1–34.1 °C / 20.2–22.1 °C | 15–129 mm | Hot by 9 AM; finish early and carry two bottles; storms from late April |
| June to August | 28.1–29.7 °C / 20.0–20.6 °C | 110–163 mm | Cool but wet; mornings often ride well, but descents and lake roads get slippery |
| September to November | 27.4–28.6 °C / 18.3–20.0 °C | 65–208 mm | September is the wettest month; November dries out and the long-ride season begins |
Strength and mobility for Bengaluru riders
Cycling builds the lungs and the front of the thighs, but it leaves the back, hips and upper body underworked, and long hours in the saddle tighten the hip flexors. That is the gap Bengaluru’s commute makes worse: hours at a desk, then hours on a bike in the same bent position. Twice a week, on non-riding days, this 30-minute routine fills it. The national guide to cycling for weight loss explains how riding fits a fat-loss plan, and how much to ride.
- 1
Bulgarian split squats, 3 × 8 each leg
Single-leg strength for the Nandi Hills climb, and it evens out a stronger and weaker leg.
- 2
Romanian deadlifts, 3 × 10
Hamstrings and glutes, which cycling barely trains, with dumbbells or a loaded backpack.
- 3
Dead bugs, 3 × 8 each side
Core control that keeps your lower back quiet on long seated climbs.
- 4
Rows, 3 × 12
With a resistance band or dumbbell, for the upper back that rounds over the handlebars.
- 5
Hip-flexor stretch and thoracic rotations, 5 minutes
Opens the hips and chest after a ride or a day at your laptop.
