Running in Ahmedabad starts with the thermometer
In Ahmedabad, when you run matters more than where. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 put the average May high at 41.8 °C, with an all-time record of 48.0 °C, and even the overnight low in May and June stays above 27 °C. Rain is concentrated in July and August, which together bring about 550 mm of the city’s 784 mm year. The cool, dry window from November to February is when Ahmedabad’s runners do their long runs and when the city’s big race, the Adani Ahmedabad Marathon, is held.
| Month | Average high / low | Rain | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 27.9 °C / 12.4 °C | 1 mm | 0.2 |
| February | 31.0 °C / 14.6 °C | 1 mm | 0.1 |
| March | 35.8 °C / 19.6 °C | 1 mm | 0.2 |
| April | 39.7 °C / 24.2 °C | 3 mm | 0.3 |
| May | 41.8 °C / 27.3 °C | 6 mm | 0.3 |
| June | 39.0 °C / 27.7 °C | 84 mm | 3.9 |
| July | 33.7 °C / 26.1 °C | 310 mm | 11.3 |
| August | 32.3 °C / 25.3 °C | 242 mm | 10.3 |
| September | 33.6 °C / 24.9 °C | 120 mm | 6.1 |
| October | 35.6 °C / 21.8 °C | 13 mm | 0.9 |
| November | 33.1 °C / 17.2 °C | 2 mm | 0.3 |
| December | 29.5 °C / 13.6 °C | 1 mm | 0.1 |
- November to February is the season. Lows of 12–17 °C and almost no rain make 5–6 AM runs comfortable, and humidity sits around 26–39%.
- March to June is survival running. By April the average high is close to 40 °C and the morning low is already 24 °C, so finish outdoor runs by about 7 AM, carry water, and move intervals indoors.
- July to September is wet and sticky, with humidity near 70% in July and August. The heat drops, but sweat doesn’t evaporate, so slow down and drink more than you think you need.
- October is a false start: the rain has gone but the average high is back up to 35.6 °C. Build mileage carefully for a November race.
Best running tracks in Ahmedabad compared
Ahmedabad doesn’t have a large central park like some other cities, so its running is built around the Sabarmati River, a historic lake in the old city and a few sports facilities. The table below sets out the places we could verify, with distances and rules from the official riverfront site, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Gujarat University and route guides (checked October 2026).
| Place | Distance | Surface | Access and cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sabarmati Riverfront lower promenade | 11.3 km east bank, 11.2 km west bank | Concrete paving, 6–18 m wide | Free; official hours 9 AM–9 PM |
| Kankaria Lake lakefront, Maninagar | About 2–2.3 km round the lake | Paved promenade | Free for morning walkers 4–8 AM; ticketed later; closed Mondays |
| Gujarat University synthetic track | Standard athletics track | Synthetic | ₹2,000 a month for the public; 6:30–9:30 AM and 4–7 PM |
| Sabarmati Riverfront Sports Park, Paldi | Jogging tracks (length not published) | Mixed | Open to all; slot booking for courts |
Sabarmati Riverfront: Ahmedabad’s 11 km running track
If you searched for the best running track in Ahmedabad, the Sabarmati Riverfront promenade is the answer most runners give. The official riverfront site describes two continuous levels along each bank. The lower level sits just above the water and is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, with concrete paving between 6 and 18 metres wide. The east bank promenade is 11.3 km long and the west bank 11.2 km, so an out-and-back on one side gives you a half-marathon-length run without a single traffic signal.
Staircases and ramps link the promenade to street level at regular intervals and under every bridge, and lifts make the lower level accessible. That matters for planning: you can join at Ellis Bridge, Nehru Bridge or the Atal pedestrian bridge area and pick your distance. The bridge ramps are also the only real climbs in a very flat city, and the marathon course uses them, so a few ramp repeats are worth adding to your week if you are training for a race here.
Kankaria Lake: free early laps in the old city
Kankaria Lake in Maninagar is Ahmedabad’s classic jogging spot. Wikipedia gives its shoreline as about 2.25 km, and the toy train track that circles the lake is 2.3 km, so one lap of the lakefront promenade is a little over 2 km. The lakefront was redeveloped and reopened in December 2008 after a ₹30 crore renovation, and the promenade is closed to vehicles.
The rules suit runners. According to TourMyIndia’s listing, entry is free for morning walkers from 4 AM to 8 AM, followed by a break from 8 to 9 AM, after which the regular ticketed hours run to 10 PM. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s heritage page lists a small adult entry fee for daytime visitors and says the lakefront is closed on Mondays. Some travel guides quote a longer loop of around 5 km, which likely includes the surrounding roads, so run it once with GPS and use your own figure.
Synthetic running track in Ahmedabad: Gujarat University
For measured intervals, the clearest public option in October 2026 is Gujarat University’s Sardar Patel Sports Complex. In September 2026 the university opened the complex to the public with a published fee list, reported by DeshGujarat: the synthetic track costs the general public ₹2,000 a month, school students ₹1,000, and state- and national-level athletes ₹1,500. Students of GU-affiliated colleges use it free with their ID and fee receipt. Public hours are 6:30–9:30 AM and 4–7 PM.
At ₹2,000 a month, the track makes sense if you run two quality sessions a week, such as 6 × 800 m or 3 × 2 km at tempo pace. On a track, warm up in the outer lanes, keep lane 1 clear for faster athletes and do your repeats anticlockwise.
Sabarmati Riverfront Sports Park, Paldi
The Riverfront Sports Park in Paldi, run by Adani Sportsline, opened in September 2023 with jogging tracks, a gymnasium, cricket pitches and courts for basketball, volleyball, tennis and pickleball. It is open to everyone, with slot booking for the courts. Its jogging track length isn’t published, but the park is useful as a meeting point: it is the start and finish area of the Adani Ahmedabad Marathon, so a run from here along the river covers the opening and closing stretches of the race course.
We couldn’t find verified loop lengths or rules for smaller spots that locals also use, such as Law Garden and Vastrapur Lake, so we’ve left them out of the table. If one of them is closest to you, measure a lap once and treat it as your easy-day loop.
Air quality for runners in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad’s winter is its best running season and also its smoggiest. In its analysis of Central Pollution Control Board monitoring data for 1 October 2025 to 28 February 2026, the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) counted six cities in Gujarat where every monitoring station breached India’s national PM2.5 standard of 40 µg/m³. No city in the country met the World Health Organization guideline of 5 µg/m³.
In practice, that means checking the AQI on the CPCB’s Sameer app before a hard session in December or January, keeping long runs on the riverfront rather than beside SG Highway or Ashram Road traffic, and moving intervals indoors on days with a poor reading. Easy running in moderate air is generally fine for healthy adults; hard breathing in poor air is what to avoid.
Running clubs and group runs in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad’s running community organises mostly through WhatsApp and Instagram, and much of it gathers along the riverfront on winter weekends. The easiest way in is through the Adani Ahmedabad Marathon: for the 10th edition on 29 November 2026, the race published more than 40 named pacers with WhatsApp groups, covering full marathon targets from 4 hours to 5 hours 30 minutes and half marathon targets from 1 hour 40 minutes to 3 hours. Joining a pacer group in the months before the race gives you training partners at your pace.

A strength routine for Ahmedabad runners, done indoors
In a city where March to June rules out most outdoor quality sessions, strength work is how Ahmedabad runners keep improving through the hot months. Twice a week, in a cool room or a society gym, this 25-minute routine covers the basics. Our national guide to strength training for runners explains sets, progressions and why it helps.
- 1
Goblet squats, 3 × 10
Quads and glutes for the riverfront bridge ramps and the late kilometres of a long run.
- 2
Single-leg Romanian deadlifts, 3 × 8 each leg
Hamstrings and balance, with a dumbbell or a filled water bottle.
- 3
Step-ups on a sturdy step, 3 × 10 each leg
A bungalow step or a low bench works; drive through the front heel.
- 4
Calf raises off a step, 3 × 15
Calves and Achilles take the load on hard concrete promenades.
- 5
Dead bugs, 3 × 10 each side
Core control so your form holds when you tire in the heat.
