Running in Ghaziabad starts with the air, not the track
Any honest guide to running in Ghaziabad has to begin with the air, because it limits training here more than the shortage of tracks does. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) analysed Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) monitor data from 1 October 2025 to 28 February 2026 and found that Ghaziabad was the most polluted of 238 Indian cities that winter, with an average PM2.5 concentration of 172 µg/m³. India’s national standard for PM2.5 is 40 µg/m³ and the WHO guideline is 5. All 28 NCR cities with enough data missed the national standard.
That number is a five-month average. Day to day, Ghaziabad swings a long way, and the useful habit is to look at the reading from the station nearest your route at the hour you plan to run, then pick the session to match. The rest of this guide covers where to run in Ghaziabad, which stations to check, and what to do on the many winter mornings when running outside isn’t worth it.
Ghaziabad’s AQI stations, and which one to check before a run
CPCB’s national list of continuous monitoring stations names four in Ghaziabad, all run by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB): Indirapuram, Loni, Sanjay Nagar and Vasundhara. CPCB’s city bulletin for 27 October 2026 counted seven reporting stations for Ghaziabad, so the network has grown since that list was printed, but those four are the ones most runners in Indirapuram, Vasundhara, Loni and Kavi Nagar will want.
The readings differ more than people expect. On 26 October 2026, CPCB’s Delhi-NCR bulletin listed three Ghaziabad stations among the region’s hotspots, and the city’s 24-hour average hid a spread of more than 50 points between them:
| Station (operator) | AQI | Category | Main pollutant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ved Vihar-Loni (UPPCB) | 213 | Poor | PM2.5 |
| Vasundhara (UPPCB) | 195 | Moderate | PM2.5 |
| Indirapuram (UPPCB) | 162 | Moderate | PM2.5 |
| Ghaziabad city average | 142 | Moderate | PM2.5 |
The same bulletin compares the date across years, and it shows why late October is a gamble in Ghaziabad. The city’s AQI on 26 October was 142 in 2026, 307 in 2025 and 256 in 2024: moderate this year, very poor last year, poor the year before. A runner who planned an October build-up around the 2026 numbers would have lost most of it in 2025.
A simple rule for Ghaziabad runs, by AQI band
| AQI at your station | CPCB category | Outdoor plan | Indoor alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–100 | Good or satisfactory | Any session, including intervals | Not needed |
| 101–200 | Moderate | Easy and steady runs; keep hard efforts short | Strength session on a hard-run day |
| 201–300 | Poor | Short easy run at most, or a brisk walk | Treadmill or a home strength session |
| 301–400 | Very poor | Skip outdoor running | Indoor strength and mobility |
| 401 and above | Severe | Stay in; ventilation shut | Light mobility only |
City Forest on the Hindon: Ghaziabad’s biggest running ground
City Forest is the closest thing Ghaziabad has to a long-run venue. The district administration describes it as a 175-acre park on the banks of the Hindon, divided into nine blocks lettered A to I, with walking trails, cycle tracks, horse riding and jeep rides, and a narrower hiking path. It lists the park as open from 5 AM to 7:30 PM, all seven days, and puts it about 8.3 km from Ghaziabad’s old railway station and 7.8 km from the bus stand, which makes it an easy drive from Raj Nagar, Raj Nagar Extension and Kavi Nagar.
Two features matter for runners. The park has two water bodies, a 5-acre lake and a 3-acre natural wetland, and trails lined with neem, bamboo, amla, jamun and arjun trees, so it is shadier than any road loop in the city. And because the area is large and split into blocks, you can link several blocks into a longer run instead of circling one small park twenty times. We couldn’t find a measured loop distance from an official source, so use a GPS watch or phone for your first visit and note the route.
One caution: the district page was last updated in June 2019, and it describes a deer park and bamboo park as plans. Check opening hours at the gate before you build a weekly routine around it, especially for 5 AM starts in winter.
Swarna Jayanti Park and other jogging tracks across Ghaziabad
For trans-Hindon runners in Indirapuram, Vaishali and Vasundhara, the everyday option is Swarna Jayanti Park in Indirapuram, on Swarn Jayanti Park Road near Niti Khand and Ahinsa Khand. Local listings describe jogging and running tracks, a Japanese garden, boating on a small pond and open-air exercise equipment. Published figures for its size disagree widely, so we won’t quote one. Its paved paths make it the most practical weekday choice on the trans-Hindon side, and a few laps with a GPS watch will tell you your own loop distance.
In Sahibabad, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Park in Rajendra Nagar is listed with lighted pathways, a semicircular path and a synthetic jogging track alongside an open-air exercise area. A soft synthetic path is kinder on shins than a society’s concrete driveway if you are building up weekly distance after a break.
| Place | Area | Surface and features | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| City Forest | Hindon bank, near Raj Nagar Extension road | Trails and cycle tracks across 175 acres, two lakes | Long weekend runs, shade |
| Swarna Jayanti Park | Indirapuram | Paved jogging paths, gardens | Weekday easy runs |
| Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Park | Rajendra Nagar, Sahibabad | Synthetic jogging track, lit paths | Building distance gently |
| Society jogging tracks | Towers across Indirapuram, Crossings Republik, Raj Nagar Extension | Usually concrete or paver loops | Short runs and strides |
Is there a synthetic running track in Ghaziabad?
People search for a synthetic 400 m athletics track in Ghaziabad, and we couldn’t confirm one that is open to the public. The city’s main stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, is owned by the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation, seats about 2,000, and is mainly used for football, with a history of cricket matches; we found no record of a synthetic track there. If you want measured repeats, a GPS watch on a flat park path does the job, and a treadmill set to a 1% incline is the best substitute on poor-air days.
When to run in Ghaziabad through the year
Ghaziabad has no IMD climate normals of its own on public record that we could find, so the temperatures below are India Meteorological Department normals for Delhi’s North Ridge station, the nearest long-term record across the Yamuna. The air-quality notes are Ghaziabad’s own.
| Months | Average high / low | What limits running | Best slot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov–Feb | 19–28°C / 9–15°C | Worst air of the year: winter 2025–26 averaged 172 µg/m³ PM2.5 | Midday on cleaner days; indoors on bad ones |
| Mar | 31°C / 17°C | Air improves, heat still mild | 6–8 AM: the best month for outdoor training |
| Apr–Jun | 37–41°C / 22–27°C | Heat; May averages 40.7°C by day | 5:30–7 AM only |
| Jul–Sep | 34–35°C / 24–26°C | Humidity of 68–76% and about 190 mm of rain in July and August each | Early morning, slower pace |
| Oct | 33°C / 20°C | Air turns from moderate to poor within days | Mornings, with a daily AQI check |
In practice that leaves two good windows: February-end to March, and the gap between the end of the monsoon and the first smog in October. Plan a race build-up so its key long runs fall in one of those windows, and treat December and January as a strength block rather than a mileage block.
GRAP in Ghaziabad: what the stages mean for your runs
Ghaziabad district falls under the Commission for Air Quality Management’s Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for the NCR. The stages are triggered by Delhi’s average AQI, not Ghaziabad’s: Stage II at 301–400, Stage III at 401–450 and Stage IV above 450. At Stage III, the plan restricts BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi and in the districts of Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar. In 2026, Stage I was invoked across the NCR on 21 October, when Delhi’s AQI reached 244 at 2 PM.
For a runner, GRAP tells you the region is in trouble; your own station tells you what you’ll breathe. On 26 October 2026, Loni was already ‘poor’ at 213 while Indirapuram was ‘moderate’ at 162, so a runner in Indirapuram could still manage an easy run while one in Loni was better off indoors.
Training for Ghaziabad runners on poor-air weeks
Ghaziabad runners lose more outdoor days to air than runners almost anywhere else in India, so the plan has to keep fitness going indoors. Two short strength sessions a week (squats, split squats, hip hinges, calf raises and core work) protect your knees and Achilles, and they are the sessions you can always do at home. Our guide to strength training for runners explains which exercises matter and how to place them around your runs.
- 1
Check the station at 5:30 AM
Look up Indirapuram, Vasundhara, Loni or Sanjay Nagar, whichever is nearest, and choose from the table above before you lace up.
- 2
Swap, don’t skip
On a poor day, move the interval session indoors as a strength workout and push the run to the next clean morning.
- 3
Keep one long run a week outdoors when you can
Use City Forest’s blocks for it, and shorten it rather than cancel it if the reading creeps up.
- 4
Build the base in March and October
Those are the months to add distance; winter is for holding fitness, not chasing it.
If you train in a society gym, Personal Gym Training in Ghaziabad adds a coach on video to your leg and core sessions; if you’d rather train with neighbours from your tower, Group Classes in Ghaziabad run at ₹499 a session each. To compare costs first, see gym fees in Ghaziabad and personal trainer fees in Ghaziabad, and for fuelling longer runs on western UP food, read our guide to healthy food in Ghaziabad. Our TDEE calculator shows how much more you need to eat once your weekly distance goes up. Everything else is at online personal training in Ghaziabad.
Races for Ghaziabad runners
We couldn’t find a recurring Ghaziabad road race with its own official website, so we haven’t listed one. Most Ghaziabad runners race in Delhi and Noida, a Metro or Namo Bharat ride away; see our guides to marathons in Delhi and marathons in Noida for dates, distances and training plans. Whichever race you choose, put its long runs in March or October, when Ghaziabad’s air gives you the best chance of training outside.
