Is there a synthetic running track in Indore?
Yes, one that we could confirm. Indore's first synthetic athletics track is a 400 m track inside the Takshashila Campus of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), opened for the training of district, state and national-level athletes, according to a 2018 report on the city's sports facilities. That last part matters: it was built for athletes in training, and we found no published rule saying the public can walk in for a morning jog, or what it would cost. If you want to use it, ask DAVV's sports department or the coaches who train there before you turn up with your spikes.
The other big name is Nehru Stadium, owned and run by the Indore Municipal Corporation. It opened in 1964, seats about 25,000 people and is used for cricket, football, kho kho and basketball. In July 2023 the city announced plans to replace it with a sports complex costing around ₹300 crore because of its condition. It matters to runners for a different reason: the Indore Marathon's half and 10 km routes start and finish outside it, and the race organisers list it as their address.
Where to run in Indore: parks, grounds and lakes
Running in Indore is mostly neighbourhood running. People go to the nearest garden or maidan before work, and the city's running community gathers at a handful of grounds where coached sessions are free. This table lists the places we could find real information on, checked in October 2026.
| Place | Area | What we know | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DAVV synthetic track | Takshashila Campus | 400 m synthetic oval, built for athletes in training; public access not published | Intervals and timed laps, if you get permission |
| Meghdoot Garden | Vijay Nagar | A user-logged walking loop on Pacer measures about 1 km (0.6 mile), flat | Easy runs and short repeats near the AB Road offices |
| Dussehra Maidan | Indore | Home of the Academy of Indore Marathoners' first free clinic, started in 2015 | Group runs and drills with a coach |
| VIP Paraspar Garden | Narmada Chouraha, Rajendra Nagar | Free AIM clinic venue | Group sessions in south Indore |
| Malhar Ashram | Indore | Free AIM clinic venue | Group sessions near the old city |
| Garrison Ground | Mhow | Free AIM clinic venue | Runners living in Mhow and Rau |
| Regional Park (Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Park) | Pipliyapala | 80 acres run by the Indore Development Authority, 42 of them lake | Lakeside easy runs and walks |
| Sirpur Lake | Indore–Dhar Road | About 800 acres including the protected area; a Ramsar wetland since July 2022 | Quiet early runs and winter birdwatching |
| AB Road corridor | LIG Square to Niranjanpur | 5 km stretch with a barricaded footpath for pedestrians and cyclists, built from 2021 | Straight out-and-back runs at dawn |
Running in Indore with a group: the free AIM clinics
The most useful thing a new runner in Indore can know is that coached group running is free. The Academy of Indore Marathoners (AIM), a unit of Malwa Marathoners that organises the Indore Marathon, runs a Runners' Training Academy it describes as "Free for All", with named coaches at four grounds: Dussehra Maidan, VIP Paraspar Garden at Narmada Chouraha in Rajendra Nagar, Malhar Ashram, and Garrison Ground in Mhow. AIM's site says it was established in 2014, and a runner quoted there says the Dussehra Maidan clinic began in 2015.
Turn up, ask for the coach, and you'll get a group of a similar pace and a plan aimed at the next race. If your goal is the Indore Marathon itself, our guide to marathons in Indore covers the race, its route and a 12-week build.
Meghdoot Garden and the Vijay Nagar loops
For the IT and office crowd around Vijay Nagar and Scheme 54, Meghdoot Garden is the obvious morning run. It is a walkers' garden first, so if the inner paths are busy, run the outer footpath or go earlier. A loop logged by Pacer users near Vijay Nagar measures about 1 km with no elevation gain, which makes it easy to count: five laps is roughly 5 km. Visitor guides disagree on whether and when entry is ticketed, so check at the gate.
If you want a longer straight line without turning every kilometre, the AB Road corridor from LIG Square to Niranjanpur is a useful option at first light. Indore Smart City built it in 2021 under the national India Cycles4Change Challenge, a 5 km pilot with barricades along the footpath so that only pedestrians and cyclists can use it. It is shared space, so keep left, run single file when it's busy and give cyclists room. Our guide to cycling in Indore has more on the corridor.
Lake runs at Sirpur and Regional Park
Indore's two lakes are its best places for an easy run with something to look at. Sirpur Lake, on the Indore–Dhar Road, was created by the Holkars in the early 20th century and became a Ramsar wetland of international importance on 1 July 2022. The lake and its protected surroundings cover about 800 acres, and around 130 bird species have been recorded there, including ruddy shelducks that winter in Indore. It is a place to run quietly: no music on speaker, no short cuts through the reeds, and stop for the birds rather than through them.
Regional Park at Pipliyapala, opened in 2003 by the Indore Development Authority, covers 80 acres, 42 of them lake. It is built for families, with boating, fountains and food stalls, so it suits an easy run or a walk with the children rather than intervals. Neither park publishes a running loop length or fixed opening hours for runners, so measure your first lap and confirm timings locally.
When to run in Indore: the Malwa heat and the monsoon in numbers
Indore sits at about 550 m on the Malwa plateau, and that height is why its nights cool down even after hot days. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 show May averaging 40.4 °C by day but 24.6 °C at night, and January 26.2 °C and 10.3 °C. The monsoon is concentrated in July and August, which together bring 568 mm of the city's 955 mm year. Evening humidity tells the rest of the story: about 15–20% in April and May, and 72–78% in July and August.
| Months | Average high / low | Rain | When to run |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov–Feb | 26.2–30.4 °C / 10.3–14.7 °C | 2–11 mm a month | Any time of day; best season for long runs and races |
| Mar | 34.5 °C / 16.9 °C | 3 mm | Before 8 AM or after sunset |
| Apr–May | 38.7–40.4 °C / 21.3–24.6 °C | 4–13 mm | Only at dawn, short and easy; very dry air |
| Jun | 36.4 °C / 24.4 °C | 147 mm | Early mornings as the rains arrive |
| Jul–Sep | 28.6–30.6 °C / 21.1–22.8 °C | 167–310 mm | Humid; run between showers, avoid waterlogged roads |
| Oct | 32.8 °C / 18.2 °C | 29 mm | Season restarts; build mileage for winter races |
- Summer: in April and May, finish before 8 AM. The air is so dry that you lose more water than you notice, so drink before you start and carry water for anything over 45 minutes.
- Monsoon: Indore's black-soil grounds turn to mud after heavy rain. Use paved paths or move the session indoors.
- Winter: January nights average about 10 °C. Start in a light layer you can tie round your waist after the first kilometre.
Counting laps when nothing is signposted
Because Indore's gardens don't publish loop lengths, most runners guess. Guessing makes it hard to see progress. Measure once and keep the number. If you do get onto the DAVV track, the arithmetic is simple, because the standard 400 m lap is the same everywhere:
| Distance | 400 m track laps | 1 km loop laps | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 km | 5 | 2 | Warm-up before intervals |
| 5 km | 12.5 | 5 | Steady weekday run |
| 10 km | 25 | 10 | Race-pace practice for the Indore Marathon 10 km |
| 21.1 km | 52 laps and 300 m | 21 laps and 100 m | Half marathon rehearsal; better on the road |
Strength work for runners in Indore
Most running injuries come from doing a bit too much, too soon, on legs that aren't strong enough for it. Two short strength sessions a week fix much of that. Our national guide to strength training for runners explains why; here is the short version for an Indore runner fitting it around poha mornings and office hours:
- 1
Split squats, 3 × 8 each leg
Builds the single-leg strength that every running stride needs.
- 2
Calf raises off a step, 3 × 15
Slow on the way down. Calves take the most load on hard maidan ground.
- 3
Glute bridges, 3 × 12
Strong hips keep your knees tracking straight on long runs.
- 4
Side planks, 3 × 30 seconds each side
Keeps your trunk steady late in a race when form slips.
If you're new to running or coming back after years off, start with walk-run intervals and add no more than one new run a week. Our guide to walking for weight loss is a good starting point, and the BMI calculator gives you a baseline before you begin.
For the rest of your week in the city: treks near Indore for weekend hikes at Patalpani and Janapav, and healthy food in Indore for fuelling around poha and Sarafa. If you lift at your own gym, Personal Gym Training in Indore puts a coach on video beside you there, and Rehab and Recovery in Indore is exercise coaching for runners already cleared by a doctor or physio after an injury.
