Running in Kolkata: the cool months are also the smoggy ones
Every runner in Kolkata works around one awkward trade-off. The only properly cool running weather comes between late November and February, and those are exactly the months when the city’s air is at its worst. From April to October, the air is far cleaner, but you run in heat and heavy humidity, and from June to September in the monsoon. Knowing both calendars, weather and air, matters more here than picking the perfect park.
India Meteorological Department normals for Alipore (1991–2020) show Kolkata gets about 1,813 mm of rain a year, most of it from June to September, when July and August each average more than 370 mm over about 17 rainy days. May is the hottest month, with an average high of 35.5 °C and a low of 26.8 °C, so even a 6 AM run starts warm. January is the coolest, at 25.5 °C by day and 14.3 °C at night.
| Month | Average high / low | Rain (rainy days) | Evening humidity |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 25.5 °C / 14.3 °C | 15 mm (1.1) | 62% |
| February | 29.4 °C / 18.1 °C | 25 mm (1.5) | 55% |
| March | 33.7 °C / 22.9 °C | 37 mm (2.1) | 51% |
| April | 35.4 °C / 25.7 °C | 55 mm (3.2) | 61% |
| May | 35.5 °C / 26.8 °C | 119 mm (6.2) | 68% |
| June | 34.1 °C / 27.1 °C | 277 mm (12.6) | 77% |
| July | 32.5 °C / 26.7 °C | 372 mm (17.5) | 82% |
| August | 32.3 °C / 26.6 °C | 372 mm (16.8) | 83% |
| September | 32.6 °C / 26.3 °C | 325 mm (13.6) | 82% |
| October | 32.3 °C / 24.4 °C | 180 mm (7.4) | 76% |
| November | 30.2 °C / 20.1 °C | 33 mm (1.4) | 68% |
| December | 26.7 °C / 15.5 °C | 6 mm (0.7) | 65% |
Humidity in the table is measured at 5:30 PM. Early mornings are usually more humid still, and sweat evaporates slowly in humid air, which is why a Kolkata monsoon run feels harder than the temperature suggests. Here is how the year breaks down for running:
- December to February: the coolest, driest stretch, with lows of 14–18 °C and almost no rain. Best for long runs and fast sessions, as long as the air quality reading is reasonable that morning (see the next section).
- March to May: heat builds quickly. Run before 7 AM, carry water on anything over 45 minutes, and expect pre-monsoon storms in May.
- June to September: the monsoon. Rain falls on 13–18 days a month, and streets in many neighbourhoods waterlog after a heavy spell. Park paths are the safer choice, and a home or gym session is the backup on washed-out days.
- October and November: rain tapers off (180 mm in October, 33 mm in November), and nights cool to about 20 °C by November. This is when most Kolkata runners start building for the winter races.
Kolkata’s winter air: what the numbers say for runners
Kolkata’s air is worst in December and January, the same months that feel best to run in. A six-year analysis of West Bengal Pollution Control Board data, reported in August 2025, found PM2.5 averaged 73 µg/m³ in December 2024 and 77 µg/m³ in January 2025. Those were the cleanest readings for those months since the data series began in 2019, but still nearly double India’s national standard of 40 µg/m³. The worst recent winter, 2020–21, averaged 140 µg/m³ in December and 131 µg/m³ in January. By contrast, the cleanest month is July, which dropped to 13 µg/m³ in 2023–24.
- Check before you go. Look at the AQI on the CPCB’s Sameer app or a monitoring station near you before a hard session. On a poor day, run easy, shorten it, or do your strength session instead.
- Move intervals off main roads. A lap of Rabindra Sarobar or Eco Park keeps you further from traffic exhaust than a run along EM Bypass or Park Circus.
- Use the cleaner months for volume. If you are building mileage for a winter race, the post-monsoon weeks of October and November give you cleaner air for your biggest weeks.
Best running tracks in Kolkata at a glance
Kolkata’s best running is around its lakes and green spaces: the Maidan in the centre, Rabindra Sarobar in the south, and Salt Lake and New Town in the east. Loop distances below come from Great Runs route guides; entry details come from the sources listed at the end of this page and were checked in October 2026.

Rabindra Sarobar: south Kolkata’s lake loop
Rabindra Sarobar, often just called Dhakuria Lake, is the most popular place to run in south Kolkata. The lake and its grounds cover 192 acres, 73 of them water, and Great Runs measures the stone-paved loop around the lake at about 4 km. It is flat (the route sits at about 11 m above sea level), so it suits steady laps, easy runs and tempo efforts. The Rabindra Sarobar metro station is close by, which matters in a city where parking near the lake is limited on weekend mornings.
Mornings at the lake are busy: walkers, joggers and the rowing clubs based on the water, including the Calcutta Rowing Club, Bengal Rowing Club and the Lake Club. Run fast efforts on the wider sections and ease off near the club gates. For short repeats, Great Runs points to Deshapriya Park, just north of the lake, which has a 0.5 km jogging track. Rabindra Sarobar Stadium, with seating for about 26,000, lies on the north side, so the area is easy to find from anywhere in south Kolkata.
The Maidan, Victoria Memorial and the Hooghly riverfront
The Maidan is Kolkata’s big open space in the centre of the city, and the best place for a longer run that feels like a tour. Great Runs maps a 9.5 km route starting at Victoria Gardens that runs past the Maidan grounds and Eden Gardens, out along the Hooghly waterfront towards Vidyasagar Setu and back past Fort William. Surfaces vary, from asphalt roads to earth paths, and the riverfront path is mostly brick. The nearest metro stations are Maidan and Rabindra Sadan.
- Riverfront out-and-back: Great Runs puts the waterfront between Howrah Bridge and Vidyasagar Setu at about 4 km, so a there-and-back is roughly 8 km beside the river.
- Victoria Memorial: the memorial’s gardens sit inside the loop but are a separate, gated area with their own hours and passes. Run around the outside unless you have checked the current rules at the gate.
- Alipore add-on: cross towards Alipore for quieter, tree-lined roads around the National Library and the Agri Horticultural Society, which Great Runs suggests joining to the Maidan route for extra distance.
The Maidan is the right choice for a weekend long run in winter, when the open ground and river breeze make it the most pleasant place in central Kolkata. It is less pleasant on a summer afternoon: there is little shade on the open grounds.
Joggers’ parks in Salt Lake and New Town: Eco Park, Central Park and Subhas Sarobar
If you live or work in Salt Lake, New Town or the Sector V offices, your running is on the eastern side of the city, and it has some of Kolkata’s largest green spaces. Three are worth knowing.
Eco Park, New Town
Eco Park is the biggest of the joggers’ parks in Kolkata’s east. Great Runs maps a flat 6.4 km loop around the park and its lake, starting near the Japanese Gardens. The park opens to the public from 12:30 PM to 8:30 PM and is closed on Mondays, according to LBB’s guide (checked October 2026), so runners use the separate morning-walk window: 6 AM to 8 AM in summer and 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM in winter, every day. Morning walking needs a subscription, listed at ₹750 a month or ₹9,000 a year plus a ₹200 registration fee, and LBB suggests entering by Gate No. 2. Day entry for adults is listed at ₹30. These figures come from a city guide rather than the park’s own notice, so confirm them at the counter before you pay.
Central Park, Salt Lake
Central Park, officially Banabitan, covers 152 acres in Salt Lake and is maintained by the West Bengal Forest Department. It has a main walking track and a butterfly garden, and the Central Park metro station on the Green Line is right beside it, with Karunamoyee bus terminus nearby. We couldn’t find a published loop length, so measure it once with GPS. Morning entry rules for walkers have changed in the past, so check at Gate No. 1 before you plan a routine there.
Subhas Sarobar, Beliaghata
Subhas Sarobar is a lake park of about 73 acres in Beliaghata, beside EM Bypass, maintained by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. Its well-paved paths around the water are popular with morning walkers and joggers, and it is a useful alternative for runners in Phoolbagan, Kankurgachi and Beliaghata who don’t want to cross the city to Rabindra Sarobar. As with Central Park, there is no official loop length, so time a lap on your watch.
For longer runs in the east, Great Runs also points to the waterfront roads and paths around the East Kolkata Wetlands, just south of Salt Lake, and to Patuli Jheel Park in the south-east, a short loop with wide paths and good lighting around a small lake.
Is there a synthetic running track in Kolkata?
Kolkata’s best-known synthetic track is inside the Salt Lake Stadium, the large football stadium in Bidhannagar, which has a synthetic track used for athletics meets. Its running track was resurfaced during the stadium’s renovation. It is an event venue, not a public jogging track, and we found no published scheme for recreational runners to use it, so ask at the stadium if you want regular track access. For most runners, a measured lake loop or a GPS watch on the Maidan does the same job for interval sessions.
Running clubs and group runs in Kolkata
Kolkata has an active club scene. Great Runs lists the Kolkata Runners Club, North Kolkata Runners, Salt Lake Runners and Kolkata Ultra among the city’s groups. Most organise through social media and WhatsApp rather than websites, so search for the club name or for your park with “run club” to find the current meeting points and whether a weekend run is free to join. A club is also the easiest way to run the Maidan safely in the dark winter mornings.
If you want a goal for the cool season, Kolkata’s big race is the Tata Steel World 25K in December, with half marathons and a full marathon in January and February. Our guide to marathons in Kolkata has dates, cut-offs and a training week for each.
Strength work for Kolkata runners
Brick riverside paths, stone-paved lake loops and monsoon puddles all load the ankles, calves and hips. Twice a week, on non-running days or after an easy run, this 25-minute routine covers the basics. Our national guide to strength training for runners explains sets, progressions and why it works.
- 1
Goblet squats, 3 × 10
Builds the quads and glutes that tire first on a long Maidan loop.
- 2
Reverse lunges, 3 × 8 each leg
Single-leg control for uneven brick and earth paths.
- 3
Single-leg calf raises, 3 × 12 each leg
Protects the Achilles on hard stone paths like Rabindra Sarobar’s.
- 4
Dead bugs, 3 × 8 each side
A steady trunk keeps your form together when humidity makes the last kilometres hard.
