Sukhna Lake: the Tricity’s default running track
Ask anyone in Chandigarh where to run and the answer is Sukhna Lake. The lake sits at the foot of the Shivaliks in Sector 1: a 3 sq km rain-fed reservoir created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe. Chandigarh Tourism lists it as open daily from 5 AM to 9 PM, with free entry (checked October 2026). The roof of the dam is a vehicle-free promenade, and an essay on the dam by Drawing Matter puts the walk along it at about 1,600 metres, from one end to the spillway. Out and back is about 3.2 km.
The promenade is wide, flat and lit after dark, but the same essay describes it as “always packed” in the evening, so serious runners go early. A 5 AM start in winter gives you the dam top almost to yourself, with migratory birds on the water in winter. For longer runs, the Sukhna Lake Nature Trail near the Bird Park, which Chandigarh Tourism recommends to joggers, adds a forest-lined path, and the roads towards the Rock Garden and the Capitol Complex link the lake to the rest of the city. The Chandigarh International Marathon runs past all three.
Running track in Chandigarh: the full list
Chandigarh’s grid of sectors, green belts and wide V-roads makes it one of the easiest Indian cities to run in. The table sets out the places we could verify from Chandigarh Tourism, the Chandigarh International Marathon site, Wikipedia and The Tribune (checked October 2026).

Leisure Valley: an 8 km green corridor through the sectors
Leisure Valley is Chandigarh’s second great running space and the one closest to most homes. Wikipedia describes it as a linear park of over 8 km, running from Sector 1 in the north to Sector 53 in the south as a chain of themed gardens. Because it cuts across the city, you can join it from a dozen sectors and run as far as you like with only occasional road crossings at the V-roads.
Chandigarh Tourism lists several sections worth knowing: a Fitness Trail in Sectors 10–11 with exercise stations, handy for a strength circuit after an easy run; the Bougainvillea Garden, set up in 1976 over 20 acres; the Hibiscus Garden, opened in 1974 over 8 acres; and a Children’s Traffic Park in Sector 23. The Zakir Hussain Rose Garden in Sector 16, established in 1967 over 30 acres, is another green loop for an easy run. At the southern end, Sector 53 is the nearest stretch of Leisure Valley for many Mohali residents.
Synthetic running track in Chandigarh and Panchkula
If you searched for a synthetic running track or a running stadium in Chandigarh, there are two established ones in the Tricity. According to a Tribune report from April 2025, they are at the Sector 7 sports complex in Chandigarh and at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Sector 3, Panchkula. Both are government sports facilities used by athletes in training, and we couldn’t find a current published fee list or public hours for either, so ask at the complex office about a pass before planning weekly sessions there.
A 400 m track is the best place in the Tricity for measured interval sessions, such as 6 × 800 m or 10 × 400 m, without traffic or walkers. Warm up in the outer lanes, run your repeats anticlockwise and keep lane 1 clear for athletes who are training seriously.
Running track in Mohali
Mohali has fewer marked running spaces than Chandigarh, which is why “running track in Mohali” is such a common search. The main project is at the Sector 78 sports complex, where The Tribune reported in April 2025 that the Punjab Sports Department was laying an international-standard, eight-lane, 400 m synthetic track to replace the old cinder track. The project covered about 4 acres, cost an estimated ₹9.36 crore, and was due for completion by the end of 2025. We couldn’t confirm in October 2026 whether it is open or what access costs, so check with the complex before you go.
Until then, Mohali runners have three practical options: the sector parks near home for easy runs, the southern end of Leisure Valley across the border in Chandigarh for longer ones, and a drive to Sukhna Lake for the weekend long run. Kharar, Zirakpur and New Chandigarh residents face a longer trip, which is one reason so many Tricity runners do their strength work at home.
Fog, frost and 38 °C: when to run in Chandigarh
Chandigarh has four distinct running seasons. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 give an average January low of 7.2 °C and an average May high of 38.6 °C, with a record of 46.7 °C. The city gets about 1,038 mm of rain a year, most of it from July to September, plus winter showers from western disturbances between mid-December and April.
| Month | Average high / low | Rain | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 18.2 °C / 7.2 °C | 38 mm | 2.3 |
| February | 22.6 °C / 10.4 °C | 37 mm | 3.0 |
| March | 28.0 °C / 14.7 °C | 27 mm | 2.2 |
| April | 34.6 °C / 20.3 °C | 18 mm | 1.9 |
| May | 38.6 °C / 24.7 °C | 27 mm | 2.2 |
| June | 37.7 °C / 26.7 °C | 147 mm | 6.5 |
| July | 34.1 °C / 26.9 °C | 276 mm | 9.8 |
| August | 33.2 °C / 26.2 °C | 273 mm | 11.1 |
| September | 32.9 °C / 24.4 °C | 155 mm | 6.0 |
| October | 32.0 °C / 18.4 °C | 14 mm | 0.8 |
| November | 27.0 °C / 12.3 °C | 5 mm | 0.5 |
| December | 22.1 °C / 8.0 °C | 22 mm | 1.3 |
- October and November are the best months: dry, with lows falling from 18 °C to 12 °C. This is also when the Chandigarh International Marathon is run, on 22 November in 2026.
- December and January are cold, damp and often foggy at dawn, with average lows of 7–8 °C and humidity in the 60s. Wait until visibility improves, wear something reflective, and stay off roads where drivers can’t see you. Sukhna and Leisure Valley are safer than the V-roads on foggy mornings.
- February and March are excellent again, with highs of 22–28 °C.
- April to June is hot and dry. Run before 7 AM and keep sessions short.
- July to September is the monsoon, with about 276 mm in July and 273 mm in August. Rain often comes in bursts, so early mornings are usually runnable, but paths in Leisure Valley get muddy.
Air quality for Tricity runners
The Tricity sits in the north Indian plains, where winter air is a real factor. In its analysis of Central Pollution Control Board data for 1 October 2025 to 28 February 2026, the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) counted eight cities in Punjab and 24 in Haryana where every monitoring station breached India’s PM2.5 standard of 40 µg/m³; Mohali is in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana. No Indian city met the WHO guideline of 5 µg/m³.
So in November, December and January, check the AQI on the CPCB’s Sameer app before a hard session, run inside green spaces like Sukhna and Leisure Valley rather than beside Madhya Marg or the airport road, and move intervals indoors on poor days. Easy running in moderate air is generally fine for healthy adults.
Running clubs and community runs in Chandigarh
Chandigarh has an active road-running scene. A Tribune report from March 2025 noted that half marathons and mini-marathons are held in the city on most weekends by various organisations. In September 2026, the Indian Air Force held a promotional run at Sukhna Lake with more than 300 runners ahead of its Sekhon IAF Marathon on 4 October. Most clubs organise on WhatsApp and Instagram, so search “Sukhna run club” or your sector name. Our guide to marathons in Chandigarh has the race calendar and a training week.
Strength work for Chandigarh and Mohali runners
Cold, stiff winter mornings and hot summer months both cut into outdoor running, so two short strength sessions a week do a lot for Tricity runners. This 25-minute routine fits a drawing room or a lawn. Our national guide to strength training for runners explains the sets, progressions and why it helps.
- 1
Bulgarian split squats, 3 × 8 each leg
Single-leg strength and balance, back foot on a sofa or step.
- 2
Kettlebell or backpack deadlifts, 3 × 10
Hamstrings and glutes for the long, flat Leisure Valley runs.
- 3
Single-leg calf raises, 3 × 12 each leg
Strong calves protect the Achilles on cold mornings.
- 4
Side planks, 3 × 30 seconds each side
Keeps your hips level when you tire late in a run.
If you already use a gym in Sector 35 or a society gym in Mohali, Personal Gym Training in Chandigarh and Mohali puts the same coach on your phone there.
