Running in Dehradun: a flat valley floor with a mountain wall on one side
Running in Dehradun is shaped by one fact: the city sits at about 450 m in the Doon valley, and the ridge with Mussoorie on top rises roughly 1,500 m above it within a morning’s drive. So the choice is rarely between parks. It is between the gentle, rolling roads east and south of the city, where Dehradun’s marathon is held, and the long climb north on Rajpur Road. Add one proper athletics track in Raipur and the Forest Research Institute’s campus roads in the west, and that is the full map. The table puts it together, with figures from the sources listed at the end (checked October 2026).
| Place | What the running is like | Distance on offer | Before you go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sports College track, Raipur | Eight-lane track laid for the 2025 National Games | 400 m laps | A residential sports college; ask before using it |
| Forest Research Institute, Chakrata Road | Quiet campus roads on a 450 ha estate | Loops of your own choosing | Ticketed, daytime visiting hours only |
| Thano Road from the cricket stadium | Rolling road into forest towards Bhopalpani | 11 km to the marathon’s Thano U-turn | Shared with traffic; forest wildlife |
| Maldevta and Sahastradhara bypass roads | River-valley roads with short rises | The 21.1 km half marathon loop | Busy at weekends near Sahastradhara |
| Rajpur Road to Mussoorie | A steady climb with hairpin bends | About 22–25 km one way | Narrow road, blind bends, taxis and buses |
| Camel’s Back Road, Mussoorie | A quieter hill road at about 2,000 m | Short out-and-backs | Cool in May and June, when the valley is not |
Dehradun weather for runners: a hot May, a soaked August and cold January dawns
Dehradun’s running calendar is decided by rain more than heat. India Meteorological Department normals for 1991–2020 give the city 2,161.5 mm of rain a year, and most of it falls in four months: 231 mm in June, 622 mm in July, 715 mm in August and 306 mm in September, with 20 or more rainy days in each of July and August. Afternoon humidity in those two months averages 79–83%. May is the hottest month, with an average high of 35.3 °C, and January the coldest, averaging 6.6 °C at dawn.
| Months | Average high / low | Rain | Running verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | 29.0 °C / 16.3 °C | 38 mm | The best month: dry roads, cooler mornings, race season |
| November–February | 19.7–25.5 °C / 6.6–11.4 °C | 5–58 mm a month | Excellent; start after first light, and watch winter air |
| March | 27.4 °C / 13.1 °C | 46 mm | Good all morning |
| April–May | 32.5–35.3 °C / 17.4–21.2 °C | 33–51 mm | Run by 7 AM, or go up to Mussoorie |
| June | 34.1 °C / 23.2 °C | 231 mm | Heat first, then the monsoon arrives |
| July–September | 30.1–30.6 °C / 21.3–23.6 °C | 306–715 mm | Heavy rain, slippery hill roads; short runs and indoor strength |
Winter brings a different problem. Dehradun lies in a bowl, and on still winter mornings the air sits in it. PM2.5 averaged 48.65 µg/m³ in 2021 and 45.88 µg/m³ in 2022, according to figures reported by The Week, against a national annual standard of 40 µg/m³. The report notes that calm post-monsoon winds and temperature inversions keep pollutants close to the ground, so check the AQI on a December morning before a hard session, and move it indoors on a bad day.
The athletics track in Dehradun: the Sports College in Raipur
People searching for a synthetic running track in Dehradun usually end up at the same place. Maharana Pratap Sports College in Raipur, on the eastern side of the city, was set up in 1993 and trains students in athletics, football, volleyball, boxing, cricket and hockey. When Uttarakhand hosted the 38th National Games, track and field was held on the college’s newly laid eight-lane track, and the Athletics Federation of India’s report from 9 February 2025 describes several Games records set on it.
We couldn’t find any published rule on public use, timings or fees. It is a residential sports school first, so contact the college through its website, mpscollege.in, before turning up. If you can get access, it is the one place in Dehradun to run measured intervals, such as six 400 m repeats at 5K effort with a lap of walking between them. If you can’t, a measured stretch of quiet road does the same job.
Running at FRI: the Forest Research Institute campus
The Forest Research Institute is the other name that comes up for running in Dehradun. Its campus covers about 450 hectares on the Dehradun–Chakrata road, roughly 7 km from the Clock Tower, with the Tons river on its western edge. The red-brick main building, inaugurated in 1929, sits in wide lawns, and the roads around it are shaded and much quieter than the city’s.
The catch is timing. Wikipedia lists visiting hours of 9:30 AM to 5 PM, with ₹100 per person for entry and ₹100 for a car, and we found nothing official about early-morning access for runners. That rules FRI out for dawn sessions in summer, but it suits a late-morning winter run, when the sun is out and the campus is at its best. Stay on the roads, keep off the research plots and follow the guards’ directions.
Long runs in Dehradun on the marathon roads: Thano, Maldevta and Sahastradhara
For long runs, Dehradun runners borrow the course of the Sarmang Dehradun Marathon, which starts and finishes at the International Cricket Stadium on Thano Road, Raipur. The organiser publishes checkpoints for the full marathon, which turn the course into a set of measured segments you can run on any weekend. The half marathon is a single loop: stadium, Maharana Pratap Chowk, Maldevta Road, Kesarwala, the Maldevta–Sahastradhara bypass road, the Marautha–Reniwala road junction and back.
| Marker | Distance from the stadium | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Thano 3 km stone (U-turn) | 11 km | A 22 km out-and-back towards the forest |
| Bhopalpani bridge | 14 km | The bridge is a natural turning point for a shorter long run |
| Shiv Mandir, Sodasaroli | 19 km | Close to half-marathon distance from the start |
| Reniwala–Sahastradhara Road U-turn | 31.5 km | The far end of the marathon’s second half |
| Maharana Pratap Chowk | 40 km | About 2 km from the finish; the last checkpoint |
These are open roads with buses and two-wheelers, so run facing traffic and wear something bright. The Thano road also passes through forest: one Dehradun outdoor operator lists elephants, langurs, deer and snakes along it, and advises against riding it alone very early or late in the evening. The same advice holds on foot. Run it in daylight, in company if you can, and carry water, because shops thin out once you leave Raipur.
Hill running from Dehradun: Rajpur Road to Mussoorie and Camel’s Back Road
Dehradun has something few Indian cities can offer: a serious hill on its doorstep. Mussoorie sits at about 2,000 m, and cycling operators measure the road from the Clock Tower at about 22 km with 1,417 m of climbing, or from about 430 m to 2,100 m over roughly 25 km. Running all of it is an ultra-runner’s day out. For most people the useful part is the first few kilometres of climbing above Rajpur, done as hill repeats: run up hard for two to three minutes, walk or jog down, and repeat six to eight times.
- Descents hurt more than climbs. Coming down 1,400 m loads the thighs heavily; build up with short downhill sections before a full descent.
- Use the road’s quiet hours. Weekday mornings are calmer than weekends, when taxis to Mussoorie fill the bends.
- Go up to escape the heat. Mussoorie’s average high is 23.0 °C in May and 23.2 °C in June, about 11–12 °C cooler than the valley. Take a bus or taxi up and run on Camel’s Back Road, a quieter road with a nature walk along it.
- Avoid the monsoon on the hills. Mussoorie averages 630 mm of rain in July and 548 mm in August; wet hairpins and landslides are not worth the risk.
Running groups and races in Dehradun
Dehradun’s running scene revolves around a few recurring events, and their community runs are the easiest way to find people to train with. Sarmang, which organises the city’s AIMS-certified marathon, also holds community runs around Republic Day, Mother’s Day and Independence Day. The organiser’s list of local events includes MADATHON, a 10K run for the city’s rivers and streams; the BSF Doon Marathon with 21K and 10K races; a Dehradun Half Marathon; and DHARAK: Dehradun Trails, a trail race of 33K, 12K and 5K in the foothills that is listed with ITRA.
Dates, fees and cut-offs for the city’s road races are on our page about marathons in Dehradun. If you’re planning to race, October is the month to be ready for: Sarmang’s fifth edition was held on 4 October 2026, right after the monsoon.
A Dehradun running week, season by season
| Season | Weekdays | Weekend | Indoors |
|---|---|---|---|
| October–March | Easy runs at first light; one session of Raipur track or road intervals | Long run on the Thano or Maldevta roads | Two strength sessions |
| April–June | Short runs before 7 AM | Hill run or easy run at Mussoorie | Two strength sessions; one replaces a hot run |
| July–September | Short runs in breaks between showers, or none | Easy run on a dry morning; no hill descents | Three strength sessions keep fitness while roads are wet |
Strength work is what lets a Dehradun runner handle both the descents from Mussoorie and the wet months off the road. Slow step-downs, split squats, calf raises and a plank are enough to start. Our national guide to strength training for runners explains the full programme; here, the point is to do it twice a week all year and three times a week from July to September.
