Trekking forts near Navi Mumbai: the Panvel cluster
Navi Mumbai lives next to the hills. Kharghar backs onto a ridge, and the forts between Panvel and Matheran (Karnala, Prabalgad, Kalavantin and Irshalgad) are reached from Panvel without crossing the creek into Mumbai. The table lists the main treks from the gentlest to the most exposed, with heights from Wikipedia and route details from published trek guides, checked in October 2026.
| Trek | Height | Start | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kharghar hills, Pandavkada area | Hills above Kharghar; the falls drop 107 m | About 4.5 km from Kharghar station | Easy walk; banned by police in the monsoon |
| Karnala Fort | 439 m | Karnala Bird Sanctuary, about 12 km from Panvel | Main trail about 2.69 km, roughly 1 hour up; open 7 AM–3 PM |
| Matheran, Sunset Point route | About 800 m | Dodhani village | 2–3 hours up a forest path to a car-free hill station |
| Irshalgad | Pinnacle above the Irshalwadi plateau | Nanivali village near Chowk station | About 6.5 km return; pinnacle about 2 hours up |
| Prabalgad | About 700 m | Thakurwadi | Long climb to the Prabalmachi plateau, then the fort |
| Kalavantin Durg | 685 m | Thakurwadi, about 2 hours by road from Panvel | Rock-cut steps with no railings; for experienced trekkers |
Kharghar hills and Pandavkada: near home, shut in the rains
The hills behind Kharghar are the small trek near Navi Mumbai that everyone tries first, and the Pandavkada waterfall is the reason. Wikipedia describes a 107 m plunge waterfall about 4.5 km from Kharghar railway station, and a grim record: four students drowned in 2005, about 12 in 2010 and four more in 2019.
Because of that history, the area is closed every monsoon. On 25 June 2026, the Navi Mumbai police’s Deputy Commissioner (Special Branch) declared seven Kharghar and Taloja spots prohibited areas under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, the Free Press Journal reported, including Pandavkada, Chafewadi, Phanaswadi and Owe Camp Dam. Outside the rains, the Kharghar hills are fine for an easy early walk, but keep off wet rock above the falls at any time of year.
Karnala: the easiest fort trek near Navi Mumbai
Karnala is the best first fort for anyone in Navi Mumbai: close, short and well marked. The fort rises to 439 m inside the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, about 12 km from Panvel. Wikipedia puts the main trail at about 2.69 km and an hour from the bottom of the hill, with a steeper 1.2 km nature trail as the alternative, and iron railings on the last steps.
Plan around the sanctuary’s hours, which Wikipedia gives as 7 AM to 3 PM; from Vashi or Nerul, a 6 AM start gets you to the gate when it opens and down before the heat. The sanctuary covers about 12 sq km and has recorded more than 222 bird species, 46 of them winter migrants, so November to February mornings are the best time to go. Leave the 125 ft basalt pinnacle at the top alone: it carries bee hives, and Wikipedia records at least one death there.
Matheran on foot from Dodhani
Matheran is usually reached by the road and toy train from Neral, but it can be walked up, which makes it one of the best one-day treks near Navi Mumbai. The hill station sits at about 800 m and is closed to cars, so the last stretch is shared only with horses, hand-pulled rickshaws and, since December 2022, e-rickshaws. Wikipedia lists five trekking routes and says each takes 2–3 hours. The most popular, the Sunset Point route, starts from Dodhani village; the hardest, via Vikatgad fort from Mamdapur, takes about three hours. Matheran averages about 5,168 mm of rain a year, so these paths are wet and slippery from June to September.
Prabalgad and Kalavantin from Thakurwadi: the steep one
Prabalgad (about 700 m) and Kalavantin Durg (685 m) share a plateau, Prabalmachi, between Panvel and Matheran. Prabalgad is the big, flat-topped fort; Kalavantin is the narrow pinnacle on the plateau’s northern edge, famous for steps cut straight into the rock.
TrekUp India, a trek operator, says Thakurwadi, the base village, is roughly two hours from Panvel by shared taxi or state bus, and that trekkers pay a small fee to a local committee. Its description of the final climb is the reason Kalavantin should be your fourth or fifth trek, not your first: sections have no ropes or guardrails, you need your hands, the scree is loose, and a fall could cause serious injury. The operator recommends November or April, avoiding the peak monsoon, and going with experienced trekkers or a guide.
Irshalgad and the 2023 Irshalwadi landslide
Irshalgad is Prabalgad’s sister fort, reached from near Chowk railway station. According to Wikipedia, you can park at Nanivali village, about 2.3 km from Chowk, and follow a clear path past Irshalwadi village to the plateau. The round trip is about 6.5 km, and the trek is child-friendly as far as the base of the pinnacle. The pinnacle itself takes about two hours to climb and 1.5 hours to descend, and Wikipedia notes numerous fatalities there; treat it as a climb for people with rock experience.
Irshalwadi, in Khalapur tehsil, is also the village below the fort where a landslide struck in July 2023. All India Radio reported the death toll at 27 on 22 July 2023. It is a reminder that in the Raigad hills, the danger in a heavy monsoon isn’t only slipping on a path; whole slopes can move. Don’t trek here during red-alert rain, and respect the village if you pass through.

Safe hiking near Navi Mumbai with a partner or a group
Hiking with a partner is the safest way to do any trek on this page, and a few habits make it safer still:
- Go in daylight and start early. Karnala closes to visitors at 3 PM; plan the others to finish by 5 PM.
- Pick the trek for the weaker walker. Karnala or the Matheran path for a first outing together; Kalavantin only when both of you have done rock steps before.
- Share your route with someone at home and tell them when you expect to be back.
- Carry 2 litres of water each, a basic first-aid kit and a charged phone; there are few shops on the trails.
- Talk to your doctor first if either of you has a heart condition, high blood pressure or a recent injury.
A 5-week plan for Karnala, Matheran and Kalavantin
The treks near Navi Mumbai are short but steep: an hour of climbing at Karnala, two to three at Matheran, and hands-on rock at Kalavantin. Five weeks of three sessions a week is enough to prepare a regular walker, and Navi Mumbai’s roomier flats and society gyms have the space for all of it. For the reasoning behind each exercise, read our national guide on how to prepare for a trek.
Weeks 1–2: build the climbing legs
- Stair climbing in your building, 15–20 minutes without stopping, twice a week.
- Step-ups, squats and glute bridges, 3 sets of 12, once a week.
- A Saturday walk of 60–90 minutes with some hills.
Weeks 3–4: add a backpack and grip
- Stairs with a 4–6 kg backpack, building to 30 minutes.
- Reverse lunges and single-leg calf raises for steep descents, 3 sets of 10 each leg.
- Dead hangs or towel holds, 3 × 20 seconds, for the rock steps at Kalavantin.
- Karnala as your test trek at the end of week 4.
Week 5: rehearse, then rest
- Walk up Matheran from Dodhani, or repeat Karnala with a heavier bag.
- Two light sessions in the final week, then your target trek.
