Trekking near Ranchi: a plateau city with hills on its doorstep
Ranchi is one of the few Indian state capitals where you can start a hill walk without leaving town. The city stands at about 651 m on the Ranchi plateau, the southern part of the Chota Nagpur plateau, and the plateau’s edges break into rocky hills and scarp waterfalls within an hour’s drive. Most trekking near Ranchi is short and steep: hilltop steps in the city, long flights of stairs down to the falls, and forest paths around them. For a full trekking day, Parasnath and Netarhat are a weekend away.
| Place | From Ranchi | What you climb | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pahari Mandir (Ranchi Hill) | 8 km from Ranchi station | 468 steps to the summit of a 2,140 ft hill | Easy to moderate |
| Tagore Hill, Morabadi | 9 km from Ranchi station | A short climb to the hilltop; rock climbers use it too | Easy |
| Dassam Falls | 34–40 km, on the Ranchi–Tata road | Paths down to a 44 m (144 ft) fall on the Kanchi | Moderate |
| Jonha (Gautamdhara) Falls | 40–45 km, off the Ranchi–Purulia road | 722 steps down to a 43 m fall, and back up | Moderate to hard |
| Hundru Falls | 45 km, or 39 km via Ormanjhi and Sikidiri | Long descent to a 98 m fall on the Subarnarekha | Moderate to hard |
| Patratu valley | About 35 km from Ranchi station | A hairpin road through the hills to Patratu dam | Viewpoint walks; best by car or cycle |
Pahari Mandir and Tagore Hill: Ranchi’s in-town climbs
Pahari Mandir is the climb most Ranchi residents know. The district administration describes it as a Shiva temple on the summit of the 2,140 ft Ranchi Hill, a bare black rock outcrop rising from flat land in the middle of the city, reached by a flight of 468 steps. It is 8 km from the railway station and 12 km from the airport. Climbed at a steady pace, it is the best free benchmark of trek fitness in Ranchi: time yourself once, then again after six weeks of training.
Tagore Hill in Morabadi is gentler. The district page notes that it was the ashram of Rabindranath Tagore’s elder brother, Jyotirindranath, and before that a rest house; the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram stands at its base. Its sunrise and sunset views draw walkers, and the district page mentions rock climbers gathering here too. It is about 9 km from Ranchi railway station and an easy early-morning outing for anyone living around Morabadi.
Waterfall trails near Ranchi: Hundru, Dassam and Jonha
The three big waterfalls south and east of Ranchi are scarp falls at the plateau’s edge, which is why each one involves a long descent and an even harder climb back up. That return climb is the real trek.
Hundru Falls
Hundru is the highest of the three. The Jharkhand government’s tourism page puts the fall at 98 m (322 ft) on the Subarnarekha River, 45 km from Ranchi off the Ranchi–Purulia road with 21 km from the main road, or about 39 km by the four-lane shortcut via Ormanjhi and Sikidiri. In the monsoon it becomes a torrent; in the dry season it is a picnic spot with a pool at the base. The walk down and back up is what makes Hundru a workout: plan for the climb out to take noticeably longer than the descent.
Dassam Falls
Dassam is a cascade on the Kanchi River, a tributary of the Subarnarekha, falling 44 m (144 ft) near Taimara village on the Ranchi–Tata road. The Ranchi district puts it 34 km from the city and the state tourism page 40 km on NH 33. The district notes that about ten streams can be seen falling at once, which gives the place its name. It is also the fall with the worst safety record: Dassam has seen many drownings, and visitors are warned not to swim because of the currents.
Jonha (Gautamdhara) Falls
Jonha, also called Gautamdhara for the Buddhist temple on Gautam Pahar nearby, falls 43 m. Reaching the base means descending 722 steps, the longest single stair climb near Ranchi and excellent trek practice on the way back up. The state tourism page puts it 40 km from Ranchi, about 32 km along the Ranchi–Purulia road and 4.8 km off it, with Jonha station 1.5 km from the falls if you’d rather come by train.
Patratu valley: hairpins and viewpoints west of Ranchi
Patratu valley, about 35 km from Ranchi railway station, is known for its road: India’s film-facilitation office describes it as cut through the hills with many S-bends and hairpin turns, leading down to Patratu dam. It is more a drive or a demanding cycle than a trek, but the viewpoints along the top make good short walks, and the climb back up the bends is a serious test for riders. Go in daylight and keep to the road.
Weekend treks from Ranchi: Parasnath, Netarhat and Dalma
For a full day on foot, Ranchi’s trekkers head to these three. Parasnath is the only one that is a genuine long trek.
| Place | Getting there | The walk | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parasnath (Shikharji), Giridih | Around 180 km from Ranchi airport, about 4.5 hours by road | Jharkhand’s highest peak at 1,365 m; the pilgrim circuit of the shrines is about 27 km | Fit walkers; train 8 weeks |
| Netarhat, Latehar | 145 km by road | Walks to Koel View Point (3 km), Upper Ghaghri Falls (4 km) and Magnolia Point (10 km) | Families and beginners |
| Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, near Jamshedpur | 10 km from Jamshedpur | Hill trails in a 195 km² sanctuary on the Dalma Hills | Day hikers |
Parasnath deserves the most respect. Its summit at 1,365 m is the highest point in Jharkhand, and the Jain pilgrimage circuit of Shikharji’s shrines covers about 27 km of paved and rough track, with the climb starting from Madhuban at the base. If you have done Jonha’s 722 steps twice without stopping, you have a fair idea of the base fitness it needs, but the distance is the bigger challenge, so build up long walks first. Near Netarhat, the state tourism page also lists Lodh Falls, the highest waterfall in Jharkhand, about 60 km from the town.
When to trek near Ranchi
Ranchi’s altitude keeps it milder than the plains, but the monsoon is heavy. IMD normals for 1991–2020 show these patterns:
| Months | Average high / low | Rain | Trekking verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov–Feb | 24–27°C / 9–14°C | Under 20 mm a month | Best: cool, dry, clear |
| Mar–May | 32–37°C / 17–23°C | 25–59 mm | Early mornings only by May |
| Jun–Sep | 30–34°C / 22–24°C | 246–331 mm, 11–16 rainy days a month | Waterfalls at full force; steps slippery, no swimming |
| Oct | 29°C / 19°C | 92 mm | Falls still strong, weather settling |
A seven-week Ranchi trek plan, from Pahari Mandir to Parasnath
This plan uses Ranchi’s own stairs and hills. It suits anyone aiming for Jonha or Hundru in four weeks, and for Parasnath’s long circuit by week seven. The general principles of trek training are in our guide on how to prepare for a trek.
| Weeks | Hill or stair day (1–2 a week) | Strength at home (2 a week) | Long walk (weekend) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Pahari Mandir once, steady pace; time it | Squats, step-ups, glute bridges, calf raises: 2 sets | 90 minutes, Morabadi or Kanke Dam |
| 3–4 | Pahari Mandir twice in a row, or Tagore Hill repeats | Add split squats and side planks: 3 sets | Jonha or Hundru: down and back up |
| 5–6 | Pahari Mandir three times, last one controlled on the way down | Slow lowering on squats and step-downs for knees | 3–4 hours with a 4–5 kg daypack |
| 7 | One easy climb | One light session | Parasnath circuit |
Walk down the steps slowly in every session: on Parasnath and the waterfall stairs, the descent is what tires the thighs and knees most. If you want a starting point for your weight and energy needs before you build mileage, our TDEE calculator helps.
