Gurugram sits right against the Aravalli range, so it has more wild ground on its doorstep than most of the National Capital Region. The catch is that most of it is not built for visitors: few marked trails, little signage and patchy legal protection. The table below sorts the hikes and treks near Gurgaon by distance, from a walk you can fit in before work to a trek that needs a Friday night bus. Distances are from the sources listed at the end and are approximate (checked October 2026).

Aravalli Biodiversity Park: the hiking trail inside Gurugram

Aravalli Biodiversity Park is the easiest hike in Gurgaon to reach, because it is in the city, on the Mehrauli–Gurugram road near Guru Dronacharya metro station. It covers about 392 acres of land that was mined for stone and sand in the 1980s and 1990s, with eight stone crushers working on the site until a Supreme Court ban took effect. Restoration began in 2010, the park opened on World Environment Day that year, and in 2022 it became India’s first OECM site, an international tag for land that is not formally protected but supports rich biodiversity.

The park has several trails, a native plant nursery and displays at the entrance, and over 185 bird species have been recorded there. Published hours are seasonal: 5:30–11 AM and 3–6:30 PM in summer, and 6 AM–5:30 PM in winter. The summer gap in the middle of the day tells you everything about Gurugram’s heat. The terrain is rocky and broken, which is useful practice for uneven mountain trails, but there is little sustained climbing, so pair it with stair work if you are training for a Himalayan trek.

Mangar Bani and Dhauj: the wilder Aravallis towards Faridabad

Mangar Bani is a sacred grove on the Southern Delhi Ridge, next to Mangar village on the Delhi–Haryana border in Faridabad district. It is about 19 km east of DLF Phase I and about 24 km north-east of Damdama Lake. Locals have protected it for generations around the Gudariya Das Baba temple, and about 95% of its forest is dhau, a native Aravalli tree. It is part of the Northern Aravalli leopard corridor that runs from Sariska towards Delhi.

There are no official trails, and as of July 2021 Mangar Bani was still not protected under forest or archaeology law, with a state proposal to notify it awaiting a gazette notice. In practice, that means you go with someone who knows the paths, stay on them, and leave nothing behind. Nearby Dhauj, also near Mangar village, is where Camp Wild runs zip-lining and outdoor activities on the Aravalli rock.

Damdama Lake and the Sohna hills

Damdama Lake, near Sohna in Gurugram district, sits at the foot of the Aravallis and fills with the monsoon, rising to 50–70 ft of water against about 20 ft at its low point. More than 190 bird species have been recorded there. It is better known for adventure activities than for long hikes: Incredible India lists rock climbing on natural rock with beginner, intermediate and advanced routes, plus kayaking and boating. The surrounding hills are good for short, steep nature walks.

Summer is the problem. Damdama’s summer temperatures reach 45–47 °C, so from April to June go at first light and be off the rocks by mid-morning. Like Mangar Bani, Damdama is part of the leopard corridor.

Sultanpur: a flat winter walk 15 km from Gurgaon

Sultanpur National Park, about 15 km from Gurgaon on the Gurgaon–Farukh Nagar road, is not a trek, but it is a useful easy-day walk. Incredible India says around 90 migratory bird species arrive each winter, and the park has four watch towers. Use it for a relaxed recovery walk between harder Aravalli sessions from November to February.

Rules in the Gurugram Aravallis: what you should know

Plan the route, check conditions and prepare what you need before heading out.
Plan the route, check conditions and prepare what you need before heading out.
  • Commercial adventure activity is restricted. On 29 February 2024, Gurugram’s Deputy Commissioner ordered a halt to commercial adventure activities such as paragliding in the Raisina area of the Aravallis and flagged off-roading for review. Much of this land is classed as “Gair Mumkin Pahar”, where commercial activity isn’t allowed. Walking is not banned, but organised events on private Aravalli land may not be legal.
  • Leopards live here. The Mangar Bani and Damdama hills are part of a leopard corridor. Hike in daylight, in a group, and keep children and dogs close.
  • Protection is patchy. Mangar Bani had no forest or archaeological protection as of July 2021, and Aravalli Biodiversity Park is an OECM, not a notified forest. Respect any gates, fences or village rules you meet.
  • Opening hours apply in the park. Aravalli Biodiversity Park follows its published seasonal hours; there is no night access.

Short treks near Gurgaon in the Shivaliks: Morni Hills and Karoh Peak

If you want an actual summit without going into the Himalaya, Haryana has one. Karoh Peak in the Morni Hills, Panchkula district, is the highest point in the state at 1,467 m. Morni is about 260 km from New Delhi and 45 km from Chandigarh, so from Gurugram it is a long day or, better, a one-night trip. A travel guide puts the walk at about an hour up to the peak and 40 minutes back down, and recommends September to March. It is a good dress rehearsal for a first Himalayan trek: a real climb, cooler air and a drive that tests how you travel.

Weekend Himalayan treks from Gurgaon

For the Himalaya, Gurugram residents have one advantage over the rest of Delhi NCR: overnight buses to Dharamshala also leave from Dhaula Kuan, on the Gurugram side of Delhi, as well as from ISBT Kashmere Gate. The journey is about 475 km and 10–12 hours to Lower Dharamshala, with HRTC’s Himsuta Volvos at ₹1,250–1,550 (checked October 2026). Uttarakhand treks start from Dehradun.

Nag Tibba, from PantwariAbout 3,020 m (9,910 ft); about 20 km over 2 daysDehradun, then 99 km and 3–4 hours by roadSeptember to March
Two weekend Himalayan treks from Gurgaon

Nag Tibba climbs well above 2,500 m, the height at which the NHS says altitude sickness usually starts, with headache, nausea, tiredness and poor sleep 6–10 hours after arrival. For a two-day trek the key rules are simple: don’t go from under 1,200 m to over 3,500 m in one day, drink enough water, skip alcohol, and if symptoms don’t ease after a day, go down 300–1,000 m. Confusion or breathlessness at rest means descend at once and get help.

An eight-week plan from Aravalli hikes to a Himalayan summit

Most people in Gurugram have two things that make trek training easy: a society gym and a tower full of stairs. This plan uses both on weekdays and the Aravallis at weekends. It assumes you can walk 5 km comfortably now. For the exercises in detail, see our national guide on how to prepare for a trek.

WeeksWeekdaysWeekend
1–22 strength sessions: step-ups, split squats, Romanian deadlifts, calf raises, planks60–90 minutes in Aravalli Biodiversity Park
3–43 strength sessions; 20 minutes of tower stairs once a weekA guided Mangar Bani morning, 2–3 hours
5–6Add a 5–8 kg pack to step-ups; stairs up to 30–40 minutesDamdama hills or a Morni Hills day with Karoh Peak
7Normal strength week; one long stair session with your trek pack3–4 hour Aravalli hike carrying your full pack
8Two short sessions, extra sleep, pack earlyTrek weekend
Eight weeks to Triund or Nag Tibba, Gurugram version

In summer, do weekend hikes at dawn and keep stair work indoors. From late October, when smog settles over the NCR, check the AQI before outdoor sessions and swap the hike for a longer indoor session on bad days rather than skipping the week.
