How much does a personal trainer cost in Boston in 2026?
Personal training in Boston has no published citywide rate, so the honest answer is a set of price points. The most local one comes from the YMCA of Greater Boston: its membership page, checked on October 28, 2026, says new members get two free personal training sessions worth $160. That puts one Y session at $80. National estimates sit around it. Trainero's March 2026 guide says a one-hour, in-person session in the US runs $40 to $120, and that staff trainers at large chains usually follow the club's price list, often $60 to $120 a session.
| Option | Price | What you get | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| YMCA of Greater Boston trainer | $80 a session ($160 for two) | In-person sessions at a Y branch | YMCA of Greater Boston membership page, October 2026 |
| Staff trainer at a large chain gym | $60–120 a session | In-person sessions at the club | Trainero, March 3, 2026 (national) |
| Urban trainer, national average | $60–100 a session | In-person sessions in a US city | FitBudd city table, May 27, 2026 |
| Healthworks Custom Program | $72 for one month | A written program, no live coaching | Healthworks personal training page, October 2026 |
| Healthworks Guided Program | $63 for 12 weeks | A pre-set online program, no one-on-one coaching | Healthworks personal training page, October 2026 |
| MakeMyFitness Personal Gym Training | $25 a session, or $223 for 12 | 45 minutes live on video, one-on-one | Our price list |
Where does Boston land in those ranges? FitBudd puts New York City at $100 to $250 or more a session and Chicago at $65 to $150. Trainero says premium trainers in New York, Los Angeles and Miami can charge $150 to $300 an hour. Boston isn't named in either, but a trainer at a Back Bay or Seaport luxury club is quoting into a market where the gym alone charges more than $200 a month, as the next section shows.
What does a gym membership cost in Boston?
Gym dues in Boston run from about $118 a month at Healthworks to around $235 at Equinox, and a new Life Time in the Seaport is expected to charge $369 when it opens in 2027. Most of Boston's premium clubs don't publish prices on their own sites, so the figures below come from Boston Magazine's club guide (last updated December 2023) and the Boston Globe, with the date on each row. Prices have likely moved since 2023, so use them to compare clubs, then ask for today's rate.
| Club | Boston locations | Monthly price | Published by, when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healthworks (women's gym) | Back Bay (Copley Square), Porter Square in Cambridge, Coolidge Corner in Brookline | From $118 | Boston Magazine, December 2023 |
| EverybodyFights | Seaport, Downtown | $119 gym only; $199 with unlimited classes | Boston Magazine, December 2023 |
| Republic Fitness | Downtown | From $130 | Boston Magazine, December 2023 |
| Equinox | Back Bay, two Downtown clubs, Chestnut Hill, Seaport | From around $235 | Boston Magazine, December 2023 |
| Life Time Athletic | Chestnut Hill, plus Framingham, Westwood, Burlington and Medford | From $239 | Boston Magazine, December 2023 |
| Life Time, Commonwealth Pier | Seaport, opening 2027 | Expected $369 | Boston Globe, October 7, 2026 |
The Globe's report says the Commonwealth Pier club will take 45,000 square feet, mostly on the third floor, next to Fidelity's new headquarters, with no swimming pool. At $369 a month, a year of membership would be $4,428 before a single coached session.
What does the YMCA cost in Boston?
The YMCA of Greater Boston doesn't list monthly rates on its membership page; it asks you to contact a branch's welcome center. What the page does say, as of October 28, 2026: it offers Adult (30–64), Young Adult (18–29), Teen, Family and Senior 65+ memberships, it waives the join fee on Thursdays with the code FunToSave, and new members get the two free training sessions valued at $160. Boston branches include Charlestown, Dorchester, East Boston, Huntington Avenue, Oak Square in Brighton, Parkway in West Roxbury, Roxbury, the Thomas M. Menino Y in Hyde Park and the Wang YMCA of Chinatown.
Boutique classes: priced per class, not per coach
Boston's boutique studios sell instructor-led group classes, which is a different product from one-on-one training. Boston Magazine's guide listed Barry's at $400 for 30 classes a month, about $13.33 a class, and B/Spoke at $340 for 20 classes, or $17 each. SoulCycle was $32 a drop-in class and CorePower Yoga $189 a month for unlimited classes. For comparison, a small live Group Class with MakeMyFitness is $16 a person, and the coach can see each person on the call.
What does a month of personal training cost in Boston, gym included?
A month of 12 coached sessions in Boston costs roughly $955 to $1,675 at chain-gym trainer rates with an Equinox membership, or $223 to $341 with a live online coach, using the published figures above. Twelve sessions is three a week for four weeks, the same as our 4-week plan.
| Setup | Coaching, 12 sessions | Gym, one month | Month total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain-gym trainer rate ($60–120) at Equinox | $720–1,440 | About $235 (2023) | $955–1,675 |
| Y trainer at the $80 value, at your Y branch | $960 | Y dues, not posted online | $960 plus dues |
| MakeMyFitness Personal Gym Training at Healthworks | $223 | From $118 (2023) | $341 |
| MakeMyFitness Personal Gym Training at your Y or building gym | $223 | What you already pay | $223 plus dues |
| MakeMyFitness Personal Home Training in your apartment | $255 | $0 | $255 |
The difference comes from the format, not a cheaper version of the same hour. A coach on video doesn't commute to Back Bay, doesn't pay club floor rent and doesn't need you to hold a $235 membership to coach you. Here is who each option suits:
- An in-person trainer at a Boston club suits you if you want someone physically spotting a heavy squat, adjusting you by hand or coaching a one-rep max. We can't do that: a coach on video can't catch a bar.
- A Y membership with its two free sessions suits beginners who want a couple of in-person lessons to learn the equipment, then plan to train alone.
- A boutique class pack (Barry's, B/Spoke, CorePower) suits people who want energy and a set class time more than an individual program.
- MakeMyFitness suits Bostonians who want a coach watching every set, three times a week, for $223 a month, and who can train between 5 and 9:30 AM or 8:30 PM and midnight Eastern time.
Is personal training cheaper at a Boston university gym?
Boston's university gyms sell training in packages that cut the per-session price. Boston University's FitRec, checked on October 28, 2026, offers one-hour or 30-minute sessions, sold in bundles of 1 to 10, and says buying several at once cuts the per-session cost by up to 28%. FitRec says its training is open to everyone who wants it, in person and from home, but the dollar prices sit behind its MyFitRec booking site, so ask for them before you commit. Trainero's guide gives a similar national rule: packs of 10 or 20 sessions typically cut the per-session price by 10–20%.
Two warnings for a student city. First, a 30-minute session at half the price of an hour isn't a discount; compare by the minute. Second, packages usually expire. If you're in Fenway or Allston for a semester, count the weeks to finals and spring break before you buy 10.
What should I check before I pay a Boston trainer or club?
- 1
How long is a session?
BU sells 30-minute and one-hour sessions. A $45 half-hour is a $90 hour. Ours are 45 minutes, at the same price whatever time you book.
- 2
Do I have to join the gym too?
Most club trainers only coach members. Add the dues and any join fee to the trainer's quote. At Equinox prices that's roughly $235 more each month.
- 3
When does the promotion end?
Healthworks advertised a $1 join with free dues on select plans through October 31, and the Y waives its join fee on Thursdays. Read what the rate rises to after the offer ends.
- 4
What happens on snow days?
Ask whether a session missed during a storm is lost or moved. Boston winters bring real snow (see our Boston fitness guide for the numbers). With us, 24 hours' notice moves any session.
- 5
Which qualification do you hold?
Ask for the certificate and the year it was earned. Our lead coach, Kumar Abhishek, holds a Diploma in Personal Training and a Human Performance Nutritionist qualification from K11 School of Fitness Sciences, plus TRX Suspension Training. He doesn't hold a US certificate such as NASM or ACE, and we tell you so before you book.
- 6
What happens in the first session?
It should start with questions about injuries, goals and your week, then a movement check (a squat, a hinge, a push-up) before anything heavy.
- 7
Will I get the program in writing?
A written plan lets you train on your own between sessions. Healthworks charges $72 for a one-month written program alone, which tells you what that piece is worth.
Is online personal training worth it in Boston?
Online personal training is worth it in Boston if you want a coach on most of your workouts for $25 a session rather than $80 or more. MakeMyFitness is live online personal training: each session is a 45-minute video call with a certified coach who watches your form and corrects it in real time. Bostonians use it in three places: at home in a triple-decker unit or a Back Bay walk-up, in the fitness room of a Seaport or Fenway building, and at the Y or club they already pay for. There's no studio and no home visit. Prices are in dollars and US cards are accepted.
| Program | One session | 4-week plan (12 sessions) | Per session on the plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Gym Training1:1, 45 minutes | $25 | $223 | about $19 |
| Personal Home Training1:1, 45 minutes | $28 | $255 | about $21 |
| Rehab & Recovery1:1, once a doctor or physio has cleared you | $41 | $382 | about $32 |
| Group ClassesPer person, small group | $16 | $127 | about $11 |
Our coaches are based in India, so Boston sessions run from 7:30 PM to 9:30 AM Eastern time in winter and 8:30 PM to 10:30 AM in summer. The slots that hold all year are 5 to 9:30 AM and 8:30 PM to midnight. That fits the city's early risers: a 6 AM session in Jamaica Plain is over before the Orange Line gets crowded, and a 9 PM session in Dorchester starts after the dishes are done.
When an in-person trainer is the better buy
Pick an in-person trainer if you're training for a powerlifting meet, need hands-on help after an injury that your physical therapist hasn't cleared, or simply train harder with someone standing next to you. For learning to deadlift, building strength for the Boston Marathon or getting consistent three days a week, a coach who sees you on camera covers what most people are paying a club trainer for.
