What does Boston actually eat in a week?

Boston food is seafood, Dunkin' and the cooking of the neighborhoods' immigrant communities. Dunkin' started in Quincy, just south of the city: Bill Rosenberg opened the Open Kettle there in 1948 and renamed it Dunkin' Donuts in 1950, and the company is now headquartered in Canton, Massachusetts, with about 14,200 locations in 39 countries. Clam chowder and lobster rolls are on menus from Logan Airport to the waterfront, and Boston cream pie, the custard-filled cake with a chocolate top, is named for the city.

The rest of the week comes from the neighborhoods. Boston's Chinatown, beside Downtown Crossing, is one of the largest Chinatowns outside New York City, and its large Fujianese population means Fuzhou cooking is easy to find, along with Hong Kong and Taiwanese bakeries. Fields Corner in Dorchester is known across the city for its Vietnamese restaurants and pho. The North End is lined with Italian restaurants and cafés, and East Boston mixes Italian pizzerias with food from Latin America. On Fridays and Saturdays, Haymarket's open-air stalls near the North End sell fruit, vegetables and seafood at very low prices.

None of that is a diet problem by itself. The calories hide in portion size, cream, butter, fried batter and sugar in the coffee. The tables below put numbers on the Boston food you actually order, so you can keep eating it.

How many calories are in clam chowder and a lobster roll?

A cup of New England clam chowder has about 161 calories and 9.3 g of protein, by FatSecret's generic entry, and a lobster roll from Luke's Lobster is listed at 300 calories and 27 g of protein. Restaurant versions vary with the cream and butter, so read these as a starting point, not a promise about the bowl in front of you.

Portion size matters more than the recipe. Legal Sea Foods, a Boston seafood chain, sells its New England clam chowder as a cup for $10 or a bowl for $12, and its lobster roll in a quarter-pound size for $35 or a signature half-pound for $53, on its October 2026 Copley Place menu. Sandwiches there come with French fries and coleslaw. A half-pound roll with fries is a different meal from a quarter-pound roll with a side salad, even though both are “a lobster roll”.

What should I order at Dunkin' if I'm trying to lose fat or build muscle?

At Dunkin', the order that fits fat loss is a black iced coffee and two Egg White & Veggie Omelet Bites: about 185 calories and 13 g of protein together. The order that undoes a morning workout is a cream-and-sugar coffee with a donut. Dunkin' is a Massachusetts company, and for many Bostonians it's a daily stop, so the numbers are worth knowing by heart.

Common Dunkin' orders in Boston, calories and protein (FatSecret's Dunkin' listings, checked October 28, 2026)

FatSecret lists two entries for the medium iced coffee with cream and sugar, one at 190 calories and one at 250, so we show the range. Either way, one a day is 1,330 to 1,750 calories a week from coffee alone. Switching to black, or to cream without sugar, is the single easiest change most Boston commuters can make.

Which Boston fast-casual meals give 40 g of protein?

b.good, a burger-and-bowl chain with a restaurant in Kendall Square, Cambridge, and counters in Logan Airport's Terminals A and B, publishes full nutrition for its menu, and several of its chicken dishes pass 40 g of protein for under 600 calories. These figures are from its nutrition document updated in October 2024.

Look at the Classic burger: with beef it's 612 calories and 23 g of protein, but with grilled chicken it's 572 calories and 39 g. Same bun, same sauce, 16 g more protein. That kind of swap, repeated at lunch five days a week, matters more than any single “healthy” meal.

How do I eat well across Boston's neighborhoods?

  • Chinatown: order steamed or soup dishes alongside the fried ones, and ask for rice on the side. Fuzhou-style soups and fish balls give protein without a deep fryer. Bakery buns are the dessert.
  • Fields Corner, Dorchester: a bowl of pho is lean beef or chicken in broth with rice noodles. Add the herbs and bean sprouts, go easy on hoisin, and ask for extra meat if you trained that day.
  • The North End: split the pasta and order the fish or chicken second course for yourself. Save the cannoli for the walk home along Hanover Street, one of them, not a box.
  • East Boston: grilled meats with rice and beans make a solid post-workout plate. Fried sides and sweet drinks are where the calories climb.
  • Haymarket on Friday and Saturday: this is where Boston buys cheap produce and seafood. A weekend haul of fruit, greens and fish covers the home-cooked half of your week.

What does a fat-loss day of Boston food look like?

Here is a fat-loss day in Boston built only from the figures above, at about 1,110 calories and 91 g of protein before fruit and vegetables. Add Haymarket fruit, a big salad or roasted vegetables at dinner, and most adults land in a sensible range. Your own target depends on your size, activity and goal, so treat this as a template.

How does a MakeMyFitness coach help with Boston food?

A MakeMyFitness coach helps with food by looking at what you already eat in Boston and suggesting swaps, not by handing you a meal plan you'll drop by Friday. Our lead coach, Kumar Abhishek, holds a Human Performance Nutritionist qualification from K11 School of Fitness Sciences alongside his Diploma in Personal Training. In practice that means a coach who asks what your usual Dunkin' order is, where you get lunch near Kendall or the Financial District, and what Sunday dinner looks like, then adjusts training and food together. We don't diagnose or treat medical conditions: if you have diabetes, a heart condition or a history of disordered eating, talk to your doctor first.

Sessions are live 45-minute video calls with a coach watching your form. Because our coaches are based in India, Boston sessions run 7:30 PM to 9:30 AM Eastern time in winter and 8:30 PM to 10:30 AM in summer, and the safe slots all year are 5 to 9:30 AM and 8:30 PM to midnight.
