Where do people run in Atlanta?
Most Atlanta runners in the city itself use the BeltLine, Piedmont Park or both, because they connect. The BeltLine is a planned 22-mile (35 km) loop of trails, parks and future transit on old railroad lines around the city's core; as of June 2026, 16.7 miles (26.9 km) of continuous mainline trail were complete in a “U” shape. The Atlanta BeltLine's own site says the loop connects 45 neighborhoods. The trail is paved, and in summer the runners who use it go early.
| Route | Distance | Where it runs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BeltLine mainline trail | 16.7 miles complete (22-mile loop planned) | A “U” around the city core | Long runs, bike commutes |
| BeltLine Eastside Trail | Not published as one figure | Piedmont Park to Inman Park and Old Fourth Ward | Busy social runs past Ponce City Market |
| BeltLine Westside Trail | 3.2 miles (5.1 km) | West Marietta Street to I-20 | Quieter runs, opened September 2017 |
| Piedmont Park | 189 acres, several miles of paths | Between Midtown and Virginia-Highland | Loops, the dirt path around the Active Oval |
| Silver Comet Trail | 61.5 miles (99 km) | Smyrna to the Alabama line | Flat long runs and rides |
Piedmont Park is Atlanta's central green space at 189 acres, with the 11.5-acre Lake Clara Meer and an Active Oval of sports fields circled by a dirt running path that's kinder on the knees than pavement. It's also where the Peachtree Road Race finishes. In June 2026, two new segments of the BeltLine's Southside Trail opened, adding a 1.9-mile paved link from McDaniel Street to Boulevard Southeast, which helps runners in Grant Park and Summerhill reach the loop.
For a really long, flat run, the Silver Comet Trail starts in Smyrna and runs 61.5 miles west to the Alabama state line, where it continues as Alabama's Chief Ladiga Trail for one continuous 94-mile route to Anniston.
Where can I hike near Atlanta for a real workout?
The best-known hill workouts near Atlanta are Kennesaw Mountain to the northwest and Stone Mountain to the east, and both are short enough for a weekend morning. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park has more than 25 miles of trails, according to the National Park Service. The Kennesaw Mountain Trail to the summit is 2.2 miles out and back from the visitor center, about an hour, rated moderate.
| Hike | Distance | What it involves | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kennesaw Mountain Trail to the summit | 2.2 miles out and back | Moderate, about 1 hour | NPS |
| Kennesaw Mountain Loop (red) | 5.8 miles | Moderate to hard, 2.5–3 hours | NPS |
| Kennesaw full park loop (green) | 16 miles | Hard, 6+ hours | NPS |
| Stone Mountain Walk-Up Trail | 1.3 miles (2.1 km) to the top | Climb to a 1,686 ft summit, 825 ft above the land around it | Wikipedia |
Stone Mountain sits about 15 miles (24 km) east of Atlanta, and its 1.3-mile Walk-Up Trail climbs bare granite to a summit 825 feet above the surrounding area. Run it twice and you've done a serious hill session. Kennesaw's trails follow the park's grounds hours: 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM in standard time (November to March) and 6:30 AM to 8:30 PM in daylight time.
North of the city, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area takes in 48 miles of river across 15 separate land units, with riverside trails close to Sandy Springs, Roswell and Vinings. You need an entrance pass: $5 for the day or $40 for a year, and the park doesn't accept cash, so buy it on your phone before you arrive.
What is Atlanta's weather like for training, season by season?
Atlanta's weather is hot and humid in summer, mild in winter and wet all year, by NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The city averages 50.4 inches (1,281 mm) of rain a year, spread fairly evenly, and just 2.2 inches (5.6 cm) of snow.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 54.0°F (12°C) | 35.6°F (2°C) | 4.59 in |
| April | 73.8°F (23°C) | 52.5°F (11°C) | 3.81 in |
| July | 90.1°F (32°C) | 71.8°F (22°C) | 4.75 in |
| October | 74.4°F (24°C) | 54.9°F (13°C) | 3.28 in |
| Year | 47 days at 90°F or more | 36 nights at 32°F or less | 50.43 in |
- Summer (June to August): highs of 87–90°F and nights that only fall to about 72°F in July. With 47 days a year at 90°F or hotter, the cool part of the day is before 7 AM. Run early, carry water and move hard sessions indoors on the hottest afternoons.
- Fall (September to November): the kindest training season. October is the driest month at 3.28 inches of rain, with highs around 74°F (24°C). It's when Atlanta runners build toward the Thanksgiving half marathon.
- Winter (December to February): January averages 54°F by day and 35.6°F at night, with about 36 freezing nights a year. Snow is rare, about an inch in an average January, but a single ice morning can close roads across the metro.
- Spring (March to May): highs climb from 66°F in March to 81°F in May, and rain runs 3.6 to 4.7 inches a month. Good running weather, with thunderstorms to plan around.
Which Atlanta races should I train for?
Atlanta's racing calendar is run largely by Atlanta Track Club, and its biggest event is the Peachtree Road Race on July 4. The club calls the Peachtree “the world's largest 10K”; the 2026 race, the 57th running, drew more than 55,000 runners and walkers from Lenox Square in Buckhead to Piedmont Park. Two club races fall within a month of this guide's date.
| Race | Date | Distances | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz Stadium Move with MADD 5K | November 7, 2026 | 5K, mile, kids' dash | Mercedes-Benz Stadium |
| Thanksgiving Day Half Marathon | November 26, 2026 | Half marathon, 5K, mile, dash | Atlanta |
| Atlanta Marathon Weekend | March 6–7, 2027 | Marathon and half marathon | Atlanta |
| Peachtree Road Race | July 4, 2027 | 10K | Lenox Square to Piedmont Park |
If the Peachtree is your goal, plan ahead: early registration for 2027 ran July 4–11, 2026, and is closed, and the general lottery and member registration open in spring 2027. July 4 is also mid-summer in Atlanta, with the average July night only cooling to 71.8°F, so train through June in the early morning to get used to it. The Thanksgiving Day Half Marathon on November 26, 2026 is the cooler alternative.
How do busy Atlantans fit exercise around traffic and work?
Atlanta is a driving city, and the drive decides when people can train. An OCity guide for Atlanta trainers warns that a 10-mile commute here can take 45 minutes, and anyone crossing between Buckhead, Decatur and West Midtown knows the I-75/85 Downtown Connector at rush hour. That's why so many Atlantans either train before work, train at home, or don't train at all.
The other Atlanta answer is the building gym. Midtown and Buckhead apartment towers often have a fitness room on the amenity floor, and suburban townhome communities in Smyrna, Brookhaven and Sandy Springs often have a clubhouse gym. They are usually underused and under-planned. Here's how to make one work:
- 1
List what's actually there
Dumbbell range, a bench, a cable machine, a treadmill. Photograph the rack so your coach can build around the real weights.
- 2
Go when it's empty
Tower gyms are quiet at 6 AM and after 9 PM, which is exactly when Atlanta sessions with us run.
- 3
Set up your phone
Prop it on a bench or the window ledge, landscape, about 8 to 10 feet away, so your coach can see your whole body for squats and presses.
- 4
Use the heat as a cue
When it's 90°F outside, the air-conditioned gym is the plan, not the backup. Swap the run for intervals on the treadmill or bike.
What does a fit week in Atlanta look like?
A realistic fit week in Atlanta mixes two or three coached strength sessions with the city's outdoor routes, timed around heat and traffic. Here's one built for someone working in Midtown and living in Decatur, with sessions inside the window our India-based coaches cover for Eastern time.
| Day | When | What |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 6:00 AM | Live strength session at home with your coach, 45 minutes |
| Tuesday | Early morning | Easy run on the BeltLine Eastside Trail into Piedmont Park |
| Wednesday | 9:00 PM | Live session in the building gym after the kids are asleep |
| Thursday | Rest | Walk at lunch; no workout |
| Friday | 6:00 AM | Live session: lower body and core, done before the Connector fills |
| Saturday | Morning | Kennesaw Mountain Trail to the summit, 2.2 miles out and back |
| Sunday | Rest | Rest, or an easy walk around Lake Clara Meer |
MakeMyFitness fits the Atlanta parts of that week that weather and traffic usually break. Every session is a live 45-minute video call with a certified coach who watches your form and corrects it as you go, at home, in your tower gym or at your own gym. Our coaches are based in India, so Atlanta sessions run 7:30 PM to 9:30 AM Eastern time in winter and 8:30 PM to 10:30 AM in summer; the slots that work all year are 5 to 9:30 AM and 8:30 PM to midnight. Sessions move with 24 hours' notice, and you can take one from a hotel room when work flies you out of Hartsfield-Jackson.
