How do people in Leeds stay fit?
People in Leeds stay fit on the parks and trails that run out from the city centre, on Saturday-morning parkruns, and in a lot of budget and council gyms. The shape of the city helps. Woodhouse Moor sits beside the University of Leeds, a 7-mile trail runs north from it to Golden Acre Park, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal starts in the middle of town and heads west past Kirkstall Abbey. The Pennines are a short drive away, and Otley Chevin, at the northern edge of the district, climbs to 282 metres.
What gets in the way is the weather and the dark. Leeds sits where the dry Vale of York meets the wet Pennine valleys, and the Met Office’s numbers either side of the city differ by more than 400 mm of rain a year. The answer most people settle on is to run when it’s dry and keep strength work indoors, where the forecast doesn’t matter.
Where can I run in Leeds? Six routes, with distances
Leeds has running routes in every direction from the centre, from flat towpath to a proper hill. Here are six, with the facts that matter for a training run.
| Route | Where | Distance or size | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roundhay Park | North-east Leeds, by Oakwood | More than 700 acres; Waterloo Lake is 33 acres | Lake laps, hills, parkrun at 9 AM on Saturdays |
| Meanwood Valley Trail | Woodhouse Moor to Breary Marsh by Golden Acre Park | 7 miles (11 km) one way | A long, mostly green Sunday run |
| Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath | From River Lock in the centre, west past Kirkstall | 127 miles to Liverpool; 91 locks | Flat out-and-back runs of any length |
| Temple Newsam | East Leeds, by Halton and Whitkirk | Capability Brown parkland and a working farm | Weekly parkrun since 2013, cross-country |
| Otley Chevin | Above Otley, north-west edge of the district | Summit 282 m; Surprise View | Hill repeats, trails, Chevin Forest parkrun |
| Wellington Street to Kirkstall Abbey | City centre to Kirkstall along Kirkstall Road | The Abbey Dash 10K route | Race-pace practice on the road |
Roundhay Park: the big loop in north-east Leeds
Roundhay Park is the largest park in Leeds, with more than 700 acres of parkland, lakes, woodland and gardens, all owned by Leeds City Council. Nearly a million people visit a year. Waterloo Lake covers 33 acres, and the smaller Upper Lake about 5 acres on higher ground, so a lap of the park includes a climb. Roundhay parkrun starts at 9 AM every Saturday. If you live in Oakwood, Roundhay, Moortown or Chapel Allerton, this is your local long run.
The Meanwood Valley Trail: 7 miles of green, north from the university
The Meanwood Valley Trail starts at the statue of Henry Rowland Marsden on Woodhouse Moor, near the University of Leeds, and runs 7 miles (11 km) north to Breary Marsh nature reserve by Golden Acre Park. On the way it follows Woodhouse Ridge and Meanwood Beck, passes Meanwood Park, goes under the Outer Ring Road and through Scotland Woods, and reaches the Seven Arches aqueduct before the final stretch under the Otley Road. You can join it at any point, which makes it easy to run from Headingley, Meanwood or Adel.
The canal towpath: flat miles from the city centre
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs 127 miles (204 km) across the Pennines, and it begins in Leeds at River Lock, by Granary Wharf. Head west and you reach Kirkstall Lock, beside Kirkstall Abbey, then the Forge Three Rise staircase locks at Kirkstall Forge, and later Rodley, where the canal passes under the Ring Road. It is the flattest long run in the city, and the locks make handy markers for intervals.
Otley Chevin: the hill Leeds runners use
Otley Chevin is the ridge on the south side of Wharfedale, above the market town of Otley. Its highest point, Beacon Hill, is 283 m, and Surprise View looks out over Otley and the valley. Footpaths and bridleways cross it, the Leeds link to the Dales Way runs over it, and Chevin Forest parkrun is a free timed 5 km at 9 AM every Saturday. Do hill repeats here once a week and the flat Abbey Dash will feel easy.
What is Leeds weather like for training, season by season?
Leeds weather is mild, grey and much wetter to the west than to the east. The Met Office has 1991–2020 averages for Church Fenton, a lowland station east of the city, and for Bingley, up the Aire valley to the west. Church Fenton records 620 mm of rain over 116 rainy days a year and 1,525 hours of sunshine; Bingley records 1,057 mm over 156 days. Most of Leeds sits between the two.
| Season | Highs and lows (Church Fenton) | Rain a month (Church Fenton / Bingley) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter, Dec–Feb | 7–8°C highs, 1°C lows; about 31 frost days | 42–58 mm / 89–121 mm | Dark, icy mornings: train indoors and run at lunch |
| Spring, Mar–May | 10–16°C highs; frost fades by May | 41–43 mm / 64–77 mm | The driest season: start a race block |
| Summer, Jun–Aug | 19–21°C highs, 10–12°C lows | 52–62 mm / 75–86 mm | Long light, rarely too hot: run early or at lunch |
| Autumn, Sep–Nov | 18°C falling to 10°C | 56–59 mm / 82–109 mm | Wet and dark again: back indoors for strength |
Sunshine is what Leeds runs short of in winter. Church Fenton averages 55 hours in January and 56 in December, for the whole month, against 196 hours in July. Bingley’s January high is only 5.7°C, and it has 49 days of air frost a year. Those are the weeks when a 7 AM run on the towpath turns into a slip hazard and a 7 AM strength session in the spare room doesn’t.
Which Leeds races can I train for in 2026 and 2027?
The Leeds race calendar is run by Run For All, and its biggest dates are the Abbey Dash in November and the Leeds Marathon and Half Marathon in May. Dates below come from the organiser’s own pages, checked on 28 October 2026.
| Race | Date | Start | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leeds Abbey Dash 10K | Sunday 29 November 2026 | 9:30 AM, Wellington Street | Out along Kirkstall Road, past Kirkstall Abbey and back |
| Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon | Sunday 9 May 2027 | 9 AM, AMT Headingley Stadium | Meanwood, Golden Acre Park, Bramhope, Otley and back |
| Leeds Half Marathon | Sunday 9 May 2027 | 10 AM, AMT Headingley Stadium | University, Meanwood, Golden Acre Park, back on Leeds Road |
| parkrun: Roundhay, Temple Newsam, Chevin Forest | Every Saturday | 9 AM | 5 km, free |
The Abbey Dash is the England Athletics 10K championship race for 2026, so the front of the field is fast: elite entry needed under 30:30 for men and 36:00 for women. The Leeds Marathon is a tribute to Rob Burrow, the Leeds Rhinos player diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019, and its first edition had more than 10,000 participants. The Leeds Half was started by Jane Tomlinson in 2003.
Four weeks to the Abbey Dash
- 1
Weeks 1 and 2: build
Three runs a week: one easy, one of 5 × 1 km at goal pace on the canal towpath, one long run of 8 to 10 km on the Meanwood Valley Trail. Two short strength sessions for hips, calves and core.
- 2
Week 3: sharpen
Keep the intervals, cut the long run to 8 km, and do one run along Kirkstall Road to learn the course. Keep strength work light.
- 3
Week 4: taper
Halve the mileage, keep a few strides at race pace, and stop strength work four days out. Rest the day before.
- 4
Race morning, 29 November
Start is 9:30 AM on Wellington Street. Eat two to three hours before, arrive early for the road closures, and warm up with 10 minutes of easy jogging.
Where can I train indoors in Leeds when it’s wet?
Indoors in Leeds means a budget gym, a council leisure centre, the university, or your own front room. PureGym has eight Leeds gyms, most open 24 hours, Active Leeds runs the council’s gyms and pools from Aireborough to Morley, and The Edge at the University of Leeds has a pool and a climbing wall. Prices for all of them are in what a personal trainer costs in Leeds.
If you live in one of the newer city-centre blocks with a residents’ gym, use it at quiet times. Weekday mornings after 9 AM and the early afternoon are usually empty. Bring a towel and a phone stand, set the phone side-on 2 to 3 metres away, and plan four or five exercises that need one rack or one pair of dumbbells, so you aren’t waiting on kit.
A home set-up needs less than people think. A mat, one adjustable dumbbell or a pair of fixed ones, and a resistance band cover squats, lunges, rows, presses and hinges. In an old Hyde Park or Headingley terrace with thin floors, ask your coach for a low-impact plan with no jumping.
How does a live session fit into a Leeds day?
MakeMyFitness sessions run from 6 AM to 2:30 PM UK time all year, and to 3:30 PM in British Summer Time, because our coaches are based in India. There are no evening sessions. In Leeds that suits four kinds of day.
| When | Who it suits | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| 6:30 AM | Commuters on the train from Horsforth, Garforth or Morley | Train at home, shower, catch the train |
| 9:30 AM | Parents after the school run in Roundhay or Moortown | Home or the local gym before work starts |
| 12:30 PM | City-centre office workers | PureGym on Cloth Hall Street or an office room at lunch |
| 2 PM | Students, shift workers, freelancers | The quiet slot, while gym floors are half empty |
A sensible Leeds week for a runner is two live strength sessions, Tuesday and Thursday morning, plus parkrun at Roundhay or Temple Newsam on Saturday and a long run on the Meanwood Valley Trail on Sunday. Sessions can be moved with 24 hours’ notice, so a frosty week or a change of shift doesn’t mean a lost session.
Is online personal training worth it for staying fit in Leeds?
It is worth it if your problem is consistency rather than access. Leeds has plenty of places to train; what breaks most plans is the dark, the wet and a busy week. A live coach on video turns up at the time you booked, watches every rep and corrects your form, at home or in your gym. Personal Gym Training is £19 a session, Personal Home Training £21, Group Classes £12 per person, and Rehab & Recovery £31 once your GP or physio has cleared you.
It isn’t the right choice if you can only train after work, or if you want someone to spot a heavy lift: for that, an in-person trainer at your Leeds gym is the better fit. For the rest, see the Leeds page for session times, healthy eating in Leeds for what to eat round your training, or the UK page for the other cities we coach.
