What does Leeds eat, week to week?
Leeds eats like a big Yorkshire city with a large student population and long-settled South Asian communities. The 2021 census counted 811,953 people in the City of Leeds district: 3.9% Pakistani, 2.6% Indian, 1.0% Chinese and 0.7% Bangladeshi. Leeds has five universities and the fourth-largest student population in the UK, with about 31,000 students at the University of Leeds and 25,805 at Leeds Beckett. Put those together and a Leeds week often runs: a Friday chippy tea, a Saturday curry or a kebab on the way home from Headingley, a Sunday dinner with Yorkshire puddings, and a Monday shop at Kirkgate Market.
This guide takes each of those meals in turn and gives the calories and protein from the UK’s national food tables, McCance and Widdowson’s Composition of Foods Integrated Dataset (CoFID), published by Public Health England in 2021. CoFID gives values per 100 g. Where we turn them into a plate, the portion weights are our own estimates, and the arithmetic is ours. The NHS puts the average adult’s needs at about 2,000 kcal a day for a woman and 2,500 kcal for a man.
How many calories are in a Leeds chippy tea?
A Leeds fish and chip supper is about 1,200 kcal at a generous portion, and most of that is the chips, not the fish. Yorkshire chip shops have a long record here: Harry Ramsden’s began in 1928 in a wooden hut at White Cross in Guiseley, on the north-west edge of the Leeds district, and the restaurant next to it once held the world record as the largest fish and chip shop, seating 250. The Guiseley restaurant closed in 2011 and reopened in May 2012 under the Wetherby Whaler name.
| Food | kcal per 100 g | Protein per 100 g | Fat per 100 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haddock in batter, fried | 232 | 17.1 g | 14.0 g |
| Cod in batter, takeaway | 240 | 16.8 g | 14.7 g |
| Chips from a fish and chip shop | 214 | 3.5 g | 8.4 g |
| Mushy peas, canned, reheated | 81 | 5.8 g | 0.7 g |
| Haddock fillet, grilled, no batter | 98 | 23.9 g | 0.3 g |
One thing the tables settle: frying oil makes little difference to the numbers. CoFID gives chip-shop chips the same 214 kcal per 100 g whether they are fried in beef dripping, palm oil or rapeseed oil, and battered haddock the same 232 kcal in dripping or sunflower oil. The size of the portion is what moves the total.
| Plate | What’s on it | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full chippy tea | 200 g battered haddock, 300 g chips, 150 g mushy peas | About 1,230 kcal | 53 g |
| Lighter version | 200 g grilled haddock, 150 g chips, 150 g mushy peas | About 640 kcal | 62 g |
The lighter plate has nearly 600 kcal less and 9 g more protein. If your chip shop won’t grill, take the battered fish, share the chips and keep the mushy peas: at 81 kcal and 5.8 g of protein per 100 g they are one of the leanest things on the counter.
How do I fit a Sunday dinner with Yorkshire puddings into a diet?
A Leeds Sunday dinner can be a high-protein meal: the beef does the work, and the puddings and roast potatoes decide the calories. CoFID lists a homemade Yorkshire pudding made with semi-skimmed milk at 197 kcal and 6.7 g of protein per 100 g, and 211 kcal with whole milk. Lean roast topside, cooked medium-rare, is 175 kcal with 32.2 g of protein per 100 g; leave the fat on and it is 222 kcal.
| Plate | Portions | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big Sunday dinner | 150 g lean topside, 100 g Yorkshire pudding, 300 g roast potatoes, 150 g gravy | About 990 kcal | 63 g |
| Training-week Sunday dinner | 150 g lean topside, one 50 g pudding, 150 g roast potatoes, 150 g peas, 100 g gravy | About 740 kcal | 64 g |
Roast potatoes are 161 kcal per 100 g in CoFID, so halving them saves about 240 kcal. Gravy made from granules is only 30 kcal per 100 g; it isn’t the problem. Keep one pudding, add a pile of peas or carrots, and the plate still feels like Sunday.
What should I order from a Leeds curry house?
The leanest Leeds curry order is a tandoori dish with plain rice or a chapati, and the heaviest is a creamy curry with pilau and a naan. South Asian food has been part of Leeds life for generations, from the takeaways of Harehills and Hyde Park to family kitchens across the city. These CoFID values cover the dishes most people order.
| Dish | kcal per 100 g | Protein per 100 g |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken tandoori, retail | 214 | 27.4 g |
| Chicken tikka masala, retail | 156 | 12.4 g |
| Lamb rogan josh, homemade | 149 | 14.4 g |
| Chickpea dhal, homemade | 152 | 7.9 g |
| Pilau rice, plain, homemade | 134 | 2.5 g |
| Basmati rice, boiled | 117 | 2.8 g |
| Naan, retail | 285 | 7.8 g |
| Chapati made without fat | 202 | 7.3 g |
| Vegetable pakora, takeaway | 293 | 8.4 g |
| Meat samosa, takeaway | 272 | 11.4 g |
Worked through with typical takeaway portions, 350 g of tikka masala, 250 g of pilau and a 160 g naan come to about 1,340 kcal and 62 g of protein. Swap to 250 g of tandoori chicken, 200 g of boiled basmati and one chapati and it is about 860 kcal with 77 g of protein. Starters are where a curry night runs away: 100 g of pakora is 293 kcal before the main course arrives.
Doner or shish at the end of the Otley Run?
Pick the shish. The Otley Run is the Leeds pub crawl through Far Headingley, Headingley and Hyde Park towards the city centre, a rite of passage for students and a regular for stag and birthday groups, and it tends to end at a takeaway. CoFID puts a doner kebab in pitta with salad at 248 kcal per 100 g and a shish kebab in pitta with salad at 149 kcal, with almost the same protein: 14.1 g against 13.6 g.
On a 350 g wrap that is about 870 kcal for the doner and 520 kcal for the shish, with about 49 g and 48 g of protein. Doner meat on its own is 377 kcal per 100 g with 31.4 g of fat, which is why a large doner and chips can pass 1,500 kcal before you count the pints.
What’s worth buying at Kirkgate Market for a training week?
Kirkgate Market is where Leeds does a cheap, high-protein shop. It first opened in 1822, its covered halls went up between 1850 and 1875, and Marks & Spencer started there in 1884 as a penny bazaar. Today it has about 800 stalls and more than 100,000 visitors a week, with fish, butchers’ and game rows and greengrocers outside. A training-week basket from the rows covers most of a plan: chicken breast, haddock or cod fillets, eggs, oats, frozen peas and whatever is in season.
In winter, what is in season is forced rhubarb. The Rhubarb Triangle, the 9-square-mile area marked out by Wakefield, Morley and Rothwell, grows Yorkshire forced rhubarb, which won protected (PDO) status in 2010. The roots go into dark sheds in November and the harvest runs to the end of March. Stewed without sugar, rhubarb is 14 kcal per 100 g; stewed with sugar it is 48 kcal. On porridge with Greek yoghurt, it is a Leeds breakfast that costs very few calories.
| Food | kcal per 100 g | Protein per 100 g |
|---|---|---|
| Rhubarb, stewed without sugar | 14 | 1.0 g |
| Rhubarb, stewed with sugar | 48 | 0.9 g |
| Wensleydale cheese | 381 | 23.7 g |
| Black pudding, dry-fried | 297 | 10.3 g |
| Pork pie, individual | 370 | 9.9 g |
| Gingerbread, homemade (nearest CoFID match for parkin) | 371 | 5.6 g |
| Porridge made with semi-skimmed milk | 84 | 4.6 g |
Is a full Yorkshire breakfast ever a good idea before training?
A cooked breakfast in Leeds can be a 700 kcal, 60 g protein meal or a 1,300 kcal one, depending on four swaps. These figures use CoFID values and our portions: 75 g of bacon, 100 g of sausages, two eggs, 150 g of beans and one slice of bread.
| Breakfast | Swaps | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| Café full breakfast | Back bacon, pork sausages, fried eggs, fried bread, fried mushrooms, 50 g black pudding, beans | About 1,280 kcal | 64 g |
| Training-day version | Fat-trimmed back bacon, reduced-fat sausages, poached eggs, toast, grilled tomatoes, beans | About 700 kcal | 60 g |
The single biggest saving is the fried bread: 498 kcal per 100 g, against 219 kcal for a plain slice. Reduced-fat pork sausages are 160 kcal per 100 g with more protein than standard ones at 294 kcal. Have the lighter breakfast after a morning session, not before it; a full stomach makes squats miserable.
What does a fat-loss day of Leeds food look like?
This day comes to about 1,750 kcal and 161 g of protein, built from food you can buy at Kirkgate Market or order from a Leeds takeaway. It suits someone whose maintenance is near the NHS’s 2,500 kcal average for a man; a smaller woman would cut the portions at lunch and dinner.
| Meal | Food | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | 250 g porridge with semi-skimmed milk, 100 g unsweetened stewed rhubarb, 100 g Greek yoghurt | 357 kcal | 18 g |
| Lunch | 150 g grilled chicken breast in a 70 g wholemeal roll, grilled tomatoes | 410 kcal | 56 g |
| Snack | Two boiled eggs | 143 kcal | 14 g |
| Dinner | 200 g chicken tandoori, two chapatis made without fat, 150 g chickpea dhal | 838 kcal | 73 g |
| Total | About 1,750 kcal | 161 g |
How do I eat for muscle gain on a Leeds budget?
To gain muscle, eat a little above maintenance with plenty of protein and lift at least twice a week, as the NHS recommends for every adult. This Leeds day lands at about 2,600 kcal and 196 g of protein, and every meal is something the city already eats.
| Meal | Food | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Two poached eggs, 75 g fat-trimmed bacon, 200 g baked beans, two slices of toast, grilled tomatoes | 664 kcal | 50 g |
| Lunch | 200 g grilled haddock, 200 g chip-shop chips, 150 g mushy peas | 746 kcal | 64 g |
| Snack | 250 g porridge with semi-skimmed milk and 150 g Greek yoghurt | 410 kcal | 20 g |
| Dinner | 150 g lean roast topside, one 50 g Yorkshire pudding, 200 g roast potatoes, peas, gravy | 783 kcal | 63 g |
| Total | About 2,600 kcal | 196 g |
If you are a student on the meal plan at a Headingley hall, the same logic works: take the extra portion of meat or fish, skip the second pudding, and keep oats and eggs in your room for the mornings.
