What does a personal trainer charge in Los Angeles in 2026?

Los Angeles trainers mostly charge between $80 and $200 per hour for in-person coaching, though no official or citywide rate exists. LA chains rarely post training rates online, freelance coaches send quotes over Instagram, and the printed numbers come from pricing guides written for the fitness industry. On October 28, 2026 we gathered every LA figure we could verify into one table, alongside the cost of 12 visits, which is three per week across four weeks.

FitBudd lumps Los Angeles in with San Francisco, and that combined row is well above the $60 to $100 the same chart gives for American cities overall. Only New York, at $100 to $250-plus, ranks higher. Its sister site FitBudd Academy says the same thing in prose: coaching in New York City, Los Angeles or San Francisco lands near the top of each range and can pass $150 per visit.

Why are Los Angeles trainers more expensive than the US average?

LA coaching costs more because the price depends on the employer, the venue and the drive. A coach employed by a chain charges whatever the chain sets. A freelancer chooses a rate and builds in freeway time. A luxury club prices in its brand and its real estate. This is how those three play out across Los Angeles.

  • Coaches at chain gyms. FitBudd Academy names LA Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness as examples of mid-tier gyms, with coaching there at $50 to $90 per visit across the US. The 24 Hour Fitness membership page mentions 25- and 50-minute options, so confirm the length before comparing.
  • Luxury clubs. The Equinox club finder shows 12 locations in its Los Angeles region, spread from Downtown LA and Hollywood out to Beverly Hills, Century City, Santa Monica and Westwood, plus six more in its Valley region and one in Studio City. No dues or coaching rates appear online. FitBudd Academy's US-wide figure for luxury-club coaching is $90 to $200-plus.
  • Freelancers who visit your home. FitBudd Academy puts these at $60 to $120 per visit before travel charges. In LA, travel means freeway time and a parking space, and some freelancers bill for both.
  • Celebrity-level independents. According to Trainero, the top trainers in LA, New York and Miami charge from $150 to $300-plus per hour. That tier is for coaches with a following and a waiting list.

Bulk buying brings the rate down, but not by much. Trainero's guide says 10- and 20-visit bundles usually knock 10 to 20% off each visit. Take FitBudd's LA floor of $80, apply the full 20%, and you're paying $64, still more than twice our $25. Read the bundle's expiry terms and the rules on unused visits before you commit to 20.

What do Los Angeles gyms charge per month?

Monthly dues at the four LA-area Crunch clubs we checked on October 28, 2026 ranged from $14.99 to $127.20, and that fee sits underneath any in-person coaching bill. Crunch publishes dues on every club page, unlike most chains in the city. Van Nuys, Chatsworth and Northridge are San Fernando Valley neighborhoods inside the city of Los Angeles; Burbank is a separate city next door.

Not one of these four pages listed an enrollment or yearly fee, so ask about both before signing. Each one names personal training as an amenity without giving a rate.

Why does Crunch Burbank cost almost five times what Crunch Van Nuys does?

Burbank sells a different product. Its page lists only One Crunch at $72.25 monthly and All Crunch, good at every Crunch club, at $127.20. The three Valley clubs sell the Base, Peak and Peak Results tiers, and the dearest of those is $34.99. If you live in the east Valley, weigh up both: the difference is $57.26 monthly, which adds up to $687.12 over a year.

Gold's Gym Venice and Equinox: famous, but unpriced online

Two of LA's best-known gyms keep their prices offline. Gold's Gym Venice, at 360 Hampton Drive, bills itself as the Mecca of Body Building and dates itself to 1965; its page mentions trainers but shows no dues. Equinox shows every address but no prices on the club pages we opened. When you compare them, ask for three numbers on paper: the monthly fee, the enrollment fee and the coaching rate.

What's the total for four weeks of coaching in Los Angeles, membership and all?

Twelve in-person sessions plus a membership in Los Angeles add up to somewhere between about $1,000 and $2,500 over four weeks by the figures above. The same 12 sessions with a live video coach, plus a gym, come to $238 to $295. Real quotes vary, but the size of the gap holds.

Twelve coached sessions over four weeks in Los Angeles, plus gym dues (October 2026 prices)

Put another way, our four-week gym plan plus a Crunch Van Nuys membership costs under a quarter of the cheapest in-person scenario. The saving comes from how the coaching is delivered. Because your coach watches through your phone camera instead of standing next to you, nobody is paying for a trainer's drive, a club's cut or rented floor space.

Here's who each LA option is right for.

  • A trainer in the room, at Equinox, Gold's or a private studio, is right if you want hands-on cueing, someone spotting a heavy bench or squat, or help with a one-rep-max attempt. That isn't us: nobody on a screen can grab a falling bar.
  • A low-cost membership with no coach (Crunch Base, $14.99) is right for lifters who already run their own program and don't need their technique checked.
  • MakeMyFitness is right for Angelenos who want every set watched, three times weekly, for $223 per four weeks, and whose schedule allows 5:30 to 10 PM or 5 to 6:30 AM Pacific time.

Is it cheaper to train on the Westside, in Hollywood or in the Valley?

The San Fernando Valley had the lowest gym dues of any LA area we checked in October 2026. Crunch Base memberships were $14.99 in Van Nuys and Chatsworth and $19.99 in Northridge, while Burbank, the closest club selling Crunch's big-city tiers, started at $72.25. That makes Northridge $5 dearer per month than Van Nuys for an identical Base tier.

Premium clubs gather south of the hills. Eight of the 12 Equinox clubs in its Los Angeles region are on the Westside or in West Hollywood: Beverly Hills, Century City, Culver City, Playa Vista, two in Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Westwood. The remaining four are Downtown LA, Hollywood, Miracle Mile and one simply labeled Los Angeles. Live in Venice, Westwood or Santa Monica and your nearest gym is more likely to be a premium one.

Nobody publishes LA coaching rates by neighborhood that we could find, so this guide gives no Silver Lake or Santa Monica figure. Collect written prices from two or three coaches nearby and hold them up against the city ranges in the first table.

What extra costs hide in a Los Angeles trainer's quote?

  1. 1

    Minutes, not sessions

24 Hour Fitness offers 25- and 50-minute options, and freelancers sell 30, 45 or 60. A $60 half-hour works out at $120 per hour. Every MakeMyFitness call is 45 minutes and costs the same at any hour.

  2. 2

    Parking and freeway time

When a coach drives to your building, find out whether travel and parking go on the bill. FitBudd Academy notes that in-home coaches usually add a travel charge.

  3. 3

A membership you didn't plan for

Club coaches usually work only with members, so add dues, enrollment and any yearly fee to their quote.

  4. 4

The expiry date on a bundle

Twenty visits that lapse after 60 days mean roughly 2.3 per week. Travel, holidays and long days on set all cut into that.

  5. 5

    The late-cancel rule

Find out the notice period and whether a late cancel costs you a visit. Ours: give 24 hours and the session moves for free.

  6. 6

    The certificate behind the coach

Ask what qualification the coach holds and when it was earned. Kumar Abhishek, who leads our coaching, has a Diploma in Personal Training and a Human Performance Nutritionist qualification from K11 School of Fitness Sciences, plus TRX Suspension Training. He has no US certificate like NASM or ACE, and we tell clients that from day one.

  7. 7

    A plan you can keep

Ask for the program on paper or in an app so you can train solo between visits and hand it to any future coach.

Does online personal training make sense in Los Angeles?

For Angelenos who would rather pay $25 than $80-plus and skip another drive after work, online coaching makes sense. MakeMyFitness runs live online personal training: each session is a 45-minute video call in which a certified coach watches how you move and fixes your technique in real time. LA clients train in a living room, a building's fitness room, on a patio, or at a Crunch they already belong to. We don't run studios or send coaches to homes. Billing is in dollars, and US cards work.

MakeMyFitness prices in the US, charged in USD. Every session is live on video, and a 4-week plan is three sessions a week.

FitBudd's May 2026 chart puts live one-to-one video coaching at $30 to $80, and FitBudd Academy gives $25 to $75, so at $25 for 45 minutes we sit at the bottom of the online range as well as far below LA's in-person rates.

MakeMyFitness coaches work from India. On Pacific standard time that opens a window from 4:30 PM to 6:30 AM; during daylight saving it shifts to 5:30 PM to 7:30 AM. Year-round, 5:30 to 10 PM and 5 to 6:30 AM always work. In practice LA trains in the evening: a 6:30 PM call in Koreatown starts while the 10 freeway is still at a crawl, and wraps up before dinner.

The limits of coaching through a camera

Through a screen, a coach can't catch a failed bench rep, pass you plates or guide your hips into place with a hand. Save one-rep-max days for a training partner or an in-person coach. For learning the deadlift, building a three-day strength routine or easing back after time off, a coach who sees each rep and talks you through it delivers most of what LA trainers bill $80 and up for.
