People in Sheffield stay fit outdoors more than most English cities allow. Roughly a third of Sheffield lies inside the Peak District National Park, about 61% of the city is green space, and it has over 170 woodlands, 78 public parks and an estimated 4.5 million trees. Five rivers meet here, the Don, Sheaf, Rivelin, Loxley and Porter Brook, and their valleys carry most of the city’s running paths.

The same geography makes a routine harder. Sheffield runs from 29 m above sea level near Blackburn Meadows to 548 m near High Stones, and 79% of its homes sit between 100 and 200 m. Green space is plentiful but not evenly spread: about 64% of householders live more than 300 m from their nearest green space. So most Sheffielders mix the two: a run or walk in a valley park when the weather allows, and strength work at home or in a gym when it doesn’t.

The classic Sheffield run starts at Hunters Bar and heads west up the Porter Valley. Endcliffe Park, 19 acres on the Porter Brook, is the first in a chain of green spaces that continues into Bingham Park and on towards Whiteley Woods. From there the paths climb towards Ringinglow and the moors. These are the routes and parks worth knowing, with the figures their own records give.

If you want flat, use the parks. Graves Park and the city-centre Botanical Gardens, a 19-acre site dating from 1836, are gentle by Sheffield standards. If you want hills, almost any road west of the centre will do.

How do Sheffield’s hills change the way you train?

Match your training setting to the conditions outside.
Match your training setting to the conditions outside.

Sheffield’s hills turn an easy run into interval training whether you plan it or not. Blake Street in Walkley is the third-steepest residential street in England, at 16.6°. Redmires Lane, the city’s highest residential street, sits at 302 m.

  • Run the climbs easy. On a 16° street, effort climbs faster than pace drops. Walk the steepest sections and keep the run conversational.
  • Train your legs for the descents. Running back down Ecclesall Road loads the front of the thighs. Squats, split squats and step-downs prepare them.
  • Strengthen your ankles and calves. Wet cobbles and steep pavements punish weak ankles. Calf raises and single-leg balance work take ten minutes.
  • Count hill walks as training. A brisk walk up from the city centre to Broomhill or Crookes is moderate activity by the NHS definition.

What is Sheffield’s weather like for training, season by season?

Sheffield’s weather is cool and wet rather than extreme. The Met Office’s Sheffield station, at Weston Park and 131 m above sea level, has recorded weather since 1882. Its 1991–2020 averages give 831.6 mm of rain a year, 133 days with at least 1 mm, about 28 days of air frost and 1,485 hours of sunshine. The record high there is 39.4°C, set on 19 July 2022.

The month that breaks Sheffield routines is December: 86.9 mm of rain over 13.7 wet days and only 48 hours of sunshine in the whole month. The months that reward them are May to August, when sunshine passes 180 hours a month and highs sit near 20°C.

Sheffield’s race calendar is built around its hills. The next big one is the Percy Pud 10K in the Loxley Valley, on Sunday 6 December 2026. These are the events worth training for, with dates from the organisers where they publish them.

Percy Pud entries have already sold out for 2026; transfers run from 18 November to 2 December. If you have a place, the five weeks from now are enough to sharpen a 10K: one hill session, one steady run and two strength sessions a week.

How do work, the tram and university terms shape a Sheffield week?

A Sheffield week is shaped by the hills, the Supertram and the university calendar. The tram has 51 stops on four routes: the Blue route runs from Malin Bridge through Hillsborough to Halfway, the Yellow from Middlewood to Meadowhall, the Purple to Herdings Park, and a tram-train runs on to Rotherham. It carried about 8.5 million passengers in 2025/26, down from a peak of about 15 million in 2010/11.

Sheffield’s two universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam, bring about 60,000 students each year. Lectures, shifts and school runs break the day into pieces, and the pieces are mostly daytime. For students between lectures, anyone on hospital shifts or freelance hours, and parents after the school run, a session at 9:30 AM or 1 PM is often easier to keep than one after work.

Can I climb, swim or train indoors in Sheffield?

Match your training setting to the conditions outside.

Sheffield has more indoor options than its size suggests. The city has six indoor climbing centres and a significant community of professional climbers, and Stanage Edge, whose northern end forms part of the city’s boundary, is the nearest big crag. Ponds Forge in the city centre was built for the 1991 World Student Games, and the English Institute of Sport has a Sheffield centre. For everyday strength work, there are four PureGym branches, two Gym Group gyms and a Nuffield Health club with a pool on Napier Street; see the Sheffield personal trainer cost guide for their prices.

If you live in one of the newer flats in Kelham Island or the city centre, check whether your block has a residents’ gym. Even a small room with a rack of dumbbells is enough for a coached session.

A Sheffield week that meets the NHS guidelines needs three strength sessions and two or three outings outdoors, with the outdoor ones moved to dry days. Here is one that works from October to March, when mornings are dark and the rain is heaviest.

  1. 1

Monday, 6:30 AM: strength at home

A 45-minute live session before work: squats, lunges and presses with a pair of dumbbells, finished before the Blue tram reaches Hillsborough.

  2. 2

Tuesday, lunch: a Porter Valley run

Thirty minutes easy from Hunters Bar along the Porter Brook and back. Walk the climbs.

  3. 3

Wednesday, 12:30 PM: strength at the gym

A coached session on the floor of your PureGym or Gym Group branch, inside Off-Peak hours.

  4. 4

Friday, 9:30 AM or 1 PM: strength at home or the gym

The third coached session of the week: pulling work, core and the single-leg strength that the descents need.

  5. 5

    Saturday, 9:00 am: Endcliffe parkrun

A free timed 5K, then breakfast on Ecclesall Road.

  6. 6

Sunday: a section of the Round Walk

Ecclesall Woods to Graves Park is a steady hike with enough climbing to count as moderate activity.

MakeMyFitness is live online personal training: a certified coach on a video call who watches every rep and corrects your form in real time. Our coaches are based in India, so Sheffield sessions run from 6 AM to 2:30 PM UK time all year, and until 3:30 PM in British Summer Time. There are no evening sessions. In Sheffield that suits early starts, lunch breaks, work-from-home days, the time after the school run, the gaps between lectures and the hours before a late shift.

You need a phone or laptop and a mat’s worth of floor. Personal Home Training is £21 a session, Personal Gym Training at your own gym is £19, and a 4-week plan of 12 sessions is £191 or £167. You can move any session with 24 hours’ notice, which helps on a morning when ice makes the hills hard going.

For what to eat around your training, see healthy eating in Sheffield. The Sheffield page has our session times, and the UK page lists every city we coach, from Sheffield to London.
