How much is a personal trainer in Sheffield in 2026?

A personal trainer in Sheffield usually costs somewhere between £30 and £60 a session, but you won’t find that number on a Sheffield gym’s website. We checked the price pages of every big chain with a Sheffield branch on 28 October 2026: four PureGyms, two Gym Group gyms and Nuffield Health on Napier Street. None of them lists what its trainers charge. PureGym lists its trainers without prices, The Gym Group sends you to its personal trainers page, and Nuffield Health shows the price only at its online checkout.

The nearest published benchmark is national. Edge, a company that sells a coaching app, says in its 2026 UK guide that a one-to-one session typically costs £30 to £60 or more, that London is often £50 to £120, and that premium studios charge £70 to £100 or more. Treat £30 to £60 as the range to test any Sheffield quote against.

A missing price isn’t a warning sign on its own. It means the trainer sets the rate, and in Sheffield that rate moves with experience, specialism and how many sessions you buy at once. Ask any trainer for the price of one session and of a block, and for the length of each.

How much is a gym membership in Sheffield, branch by branch?

Gym membership in Sheffield starts under £20 a month, and most of the choice is budget. PureGym has four Sheffield branches: City Centre South at Sheaf Gardens near the station, Millhouses on Archer Road, Crystal Peaks in the south-east and Meadowhall Retail Park in the north-east. These were the monthly prices on each branch page on 28 October 2026.

The Gym Group has two Sheffield gyms, on The Moor in the city centre and at Brookshaw Park on Gibraltar Street in Kelham Island, a short walk from the Shalesmoor tram stop. Its Ultimate tier cost £30.99 a month at The Moor and £28.99 at Kelham Island on rolling terms, with Standard from £24.99 and £22.99. The joining fee was £10 at The Moor and £15 at Kelham Island, and both gyms open 24 hours. Day passes at The Moor were £9.99.

At the other end, Nuffield Health Sheffield on Napier Street, S11, charges £60 a month for Off-Peak and £71 for Anytime on a 12-month commitment, or £70 a month on a rolling plan, with no joining fee. That buys a pool, sauna and steam room, tennis courts and classes, and an on-site clinic with GPs and physiotherapists.

Is a gym membership cheaper for Sheffield students?

Sheffield’s two universities bring about 60,000 students to the city each year, and The Gym Group prices for them. Its student savers at The Moor were £149 for six months, £219 for nine and £279 for twelve, with no joining fee; at Kelham Island they were £129, £199 and £259. Twelve months at Kelham Island works out at about £21.58 a month with no joining fee, and you pay it once, at the start of term.

What a student membership doesn’t include is anyone watching your squat. If you share a house in Crookes or Broomhill and already pay for a saver, adding coaching is the expensive part, not the gym.

What will 12 sessions a month really cost a Sheffield gym-goer?

In Sheffield you pay twice for coaching at a gym: once for the floor space and once for the person watching you. The table adds the two, three sessions a week for four weeks, using the branch prices above and Edge’s £30 and £60 figures for an in-person trainer. Joining fees, £0 to £15 at the gyms we checked, are left out.

Swapping Crystal Peaks Core for Meadowhall Off-Peak saves £8 a month. Swapping an in-person trainer for a live video coach saves £193 a month at the bottom of the range and £553 at the top. In Sheffield, where membership is already cheap, almost all the cost of personal training is the trainer.

What should I ask a Sheffield personal trainer before I pay?

There is no legal register a Sheffield trainer has to be on, so each gym sets its own standard. The trainers on PureGym City Centre South’s profiles list Level 3 personal training, and Nuffield Health says its trainers are registered with CIMSPA, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity. These questions work for any trainer in the city, us included.

   Ask for the qualification by name. Level 3 personal training is the UK chains’ usual bar; specialist work, such as training after surgery or in pregnancy, needs more.

   How long the session is

   Nuffield Health sells 30- and 60-minute sessions, Peak Studio on Ecclesall Road prices by 55 minutes and our sessions are 45. Compare price per minute, not per session.

   When a block expires

   Nuffield Health’s 4-, 8- and 12-hour packs expire 90 days after purchase. Check the expiry on any block before you pay for it up front.

   Whether you must be a member

   Personal training at Nuffield Health is for gym members only, so the £60 to £71 membership is part of the price. Budget-gym trainers usually expect the same.

   Whether you can share

   Nuffield’s partner packs cost 150% of a one-to-one pack, so two people pay 75% each. If a friend trains at the same time, ask any trainer for a shared rate.

   Kelham Island to Mosborough is the width of the city. Count the tram or the drive, both ways, as part of every session you compare.

Is online personal training worth it in Sheffield at £19?

For most Sheffield clients, yes, provided the timing works. With MakeMyFitness your coach is live on a video call for the whole 45 minutes, watching each rep and calling out corrections, whether you’re on a mat in Hillsborough or under a rack at Meadowhall. There are no recordings, studios or visits to your door. The coaching team works from India, which sets the UK window: 6 AM to 2:30 PM through the winter months, stretching to 3:30 PM once the clocks go forward.

Set £19 against Edge’s £30 to £60 and it is under two-thirds of the low end and under a third of the high end. Twelve sessions over four weeks drop the price to £167, paid in pounds by UK card. Tell us a day ahead and any session can be rescheduled.

Video has limits worth naming. Nobody on a screen can catch a failed bench rep or change your plates, so save maximal lifts for when a friend is beside you. The faults coaches correct most, knees drifting in on a squat or a back rounding on a deadlift, are easy to see from a phone leaning on a rack.

• Pool, sauna and a GP clinic under one roof: Nuffield Health on Napier Street, £60 to £71 a month, with trainer time sold in packs of 1, 4, 8 or 12 hours.
• A student counting every pound: £259 buys a year at The Gym Group in Kelham Island; book coaching when your technique needs a second pair of eyes.
• Already a PureGym member in the city: stay on Off-Peak or Core and book Personal Gym Training at £19, with the coach on your phone between the racks.
• Halfway up a hill with no wish to walk down it: Personal Home Training, £21 a time, happens on your own carpet.
• Recovering from an injury or operation: your GP or physio clears you first. After that, Rehab & Recovery coaching is £31 a session; it does not replace physiotherapy.
• Free only after 5 PM: look elsewhere. We finish at 2:30 PM in winter and 3:30 PM in summer, so a Sheffield trainer in person is the right call for evening slots.
• Lifting near your limit and needing a spotter: book someone in the gym with you. A screen can’t catch a bar.
