What do people in Fujairah actually eat?

Fujairah eats from the Gulf of Oman. The emirate’s capital is a fishing town as much as a port city, and one of its best-known food addresses is the Fujairah Fish Market on Al Gurfah Road, near the Corniche in Al ’Uwaid. Property Finder’s guide to the market, dated 4 October 2025, lists what comes in: hammour (grouper), kingfish, safi (rabbitfish), red snapper, shrimp and prawns, crab, lobster, cuttlefish, squid, goatfish and sea bream. The selection changes every day with the boats.

Around that sit three other food cultures. Emirati home cooking brings machboos, harees, margoogat and grilled fish to the family table. The large South Asian workforce at the port and the oil terminals keeps biryani, paratha and karak tea on menus all over the city. And the malls, City Centre Fujairah, LuLu and Fujairah Mall among them, add the shawarma counters, juice bars and chain burgers you find across the UAE.

For anyone training, this is good news. A high-protein, low-fat meal here takes three steps: buy a fish in the morning, have it cleaned on the spot, and have it grilled at one of the small restaurants nearby.

How do you buy and cook fish at the Fujairah Fish Market?

The Fujairah Fish Market opens 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM from Saturday to Thursday, and 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM on Fridays, according to Property Finder’s October 2025 guide. Fish is sold by weight and prices can be negotiated; the guide lists no fixed prices. The catch is freshest early in the morning, and the market is busiest in the evening.

  1. 1

    Go early

The boats land in the morning. Arrive soon after opening for the widest choice of hammour, kingfish and safi.

  2. 2

Pick a whole fish and check it

Clear eyes, red gills and firm flesh. Ask the seller to weigh it in front of you and agree the price before cleaning.

  3. 3

    Have it cleaned

The market’s cleaning stations charge about AED 1–1.5 a kilo. Ask for fillets or steaks if you plan to cook at home.

  4. 4

    Have it grilled, not fried

Many small restaurants near the market will grill, fry or bake your fish for a fee. Grilled with lemon and spice keeps the oil, and the calories, down.

  5. 5

    Freeze the rest in portions

Bag fillets in 150–200 g portions, which is one meal’s protein, so the week’s lunches are ready.

How many calories and how much protein are in Fujairah’s favourite foods?

These figures come from USDA FoodData Central, the US government’s food composition database, using the closest matching entry for each dish. No Fujairah or UAE authority publishes lab-tested values for these dishes, so treat them as good estimates: a restaurant’s oil, ghee and portion size will move the numbers.

Two things stand out. Grilled hammour gives 24.8 g of protein per 100 g for 118 kcal, so a whole fillet covers half a day’s protein for most people. Kingfish is oilier, 6.3 g of fat per 100 g against hammour’s 1.3 g, which makes it more filling and still lean. By contrast, a plate of luqaimat, the syrup-soaked dumplings served at weddings and iftar, carries more calories than a grilled fillet and almost no protein.

Is biryani or shawarma a better lunch in Fujairah?

For protein per calorie, a cup of chicken biryani and a shawarma are close: about 6.9 g of protein per 100 kcal for biryani and 6.1 g for shawarma, from the USDA entries above. The difference is portion. A 400 g restaurant plate of biryani is 416 kcal before raita or a fried side, and many people eat more than that after a physical shift.

  • Ask for extra chicken and half the rice. A biryani with more meat and less rice moves the protein up without adding much energy.
  • Pick the plate over the wrap for shawarma. A shawarma plate with salad lets you leave the fries and choose how much garlic sauce goes on.
  • Go easy on garlic sauce and tahini. Both are mostly oil. One spoonful is enough for flavour.
  • Add the salad and the laban. Cucumber, tomato and a glass of laban make a biryani lunch more filling.

How do you lighten Emirati dishes at a Fujairah family table?

Emirati family meals in Fujairah lean on rice, meat, ghee and dates, and each dish has an easy lighter version. These come from the DHA dietitians Gulf News interviewed in November 2020.

DishWhat it isThe lighter version
MachboosSpiced rice with chicken, lamb or fishLess ghee, skinless chicken or lean lamb, grilled rather than fried chicken
HareesSlow-cooked wheat and meatCut or skip the ghee, remove chicken skin, use lean lamb
MargoogatTomato and meat stew with breadSwap red meat for chicken, add vegetables
BalaleetSweet vermicelli, often with eggBoil the vermicelli instead of frying, use less butter and sugar
RangeenaDate cakeWhole wheat or oat flour, olive oil, no added sugar

A fish machboos with east-coast kingfish already does most of this. Ask for the fish grilled on top rather than fried, and for a smaller scoop of rice.

What does a fat-loss day of Fujairah food look like?

A fat-loss day in Fujairah can be built almost entirely around the fish market. This day uses the USDA figures above. The counted foods give about 1,024 kcal and 105 g of protein, which leaves room for vegetables, fruit, a piece of bread and the oil the fish is cooked in.

What does a muscle-gain day look like in Fujairah?

A muscle-gain day adds a shawarma and a full plate of biryani to the same base. The counted foods give about 1,604 kcal and 142 g of protein, before bread, fruit, laban and cooking oil, which take most people well past that.

How should you eat and train during Ramadan in Fujairah?

In Ramadan, many Fujairah restaurants change their hours or close in the day and reopen fully at iftar, according to u.ae, the UAE government portal. The same page advises people who are fasting to keep physical activity moderate. Working hours fall by two hours a day under UAE labour law, which frees part of the afternoon.

  • Break the fast with two or three dates and water, about 133–199 kcal of quick energy, then eat the main meal after prayer.
  • Put protein in the iftar meal: grilled fish, chicken machboos or harees with lean meat.
  • Keep luqaimat to a few pieces. Six are about 383 kcal on the closest USDA match.
  • Train lightly. A short session in the hour before iftar or one after suhoor works best; move sessions with 24 hours’ notice as the month changes.

Can a coach help with food, not just training?

Yes. Food comes up in every MakeMyFitness programme, because training without eating enough protein wastes much of the work. Our lead coach Kumar Abhishek is qualified as a Human Performance Nutritionist at K11 School of Fitness Sciences, alongside his Diploma in Personal Training. Your coach will talk through what you eat in a week of Fujairah meals, not hand you a meal plan of foods you can’t buy here.
