Which months are good for training outdoors in Abu Dhabi?
Abu Dhabi has about five comfortable months for outdoor training, from November to March, and five or six that push you indoors. The averages below are the National Center of Meteorology’s figures for Abu Dhabi International Airport, published by the WMO’s World Weather Information Service. The rainfall figures cover 1982 to 1991.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain | Training outdoors |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 23.8°C | 11.8°C | 3.9 mm | Any time of day |
| February | 24.6°C | 13.2°C | 42.0 mm over 3.5 days | Any time; the wettest month |
| March | 28.6°C | 15.8°C | 24.8 mm | Mornings and late afternoons |
| April | 33.4°C | 19.1°C | 7.3 mm | Early mornings |
| May | 38.4°C | 22.8°C | 0 mm | Dawn only, short sessions |
| June | 39.6°C | 24.8°C | 0 mm | Indoors |
| July | 42.0°C | 27.6°C | 0 mm | Indoors |
| August | 41.5°C | 28.7°C | 0.1 mm | Indoors |
| September | 40.1°C | 25.6°C | 0 mm | Indoors |
| October | 35.8°C | 21.8°C | 0 mm | Dawn, from late in the month |
| November | 30.6°C | 17.5°C | 1.8 mm | Mornings and late afternoons |
| December | 25.7°C | 14.1°C | 9.0 mm | Any time of day |
The hard months are July and August, when even the average overnight low stays at 27.6°C and 28.7°C. A run at first light in August starts close to 30°C. Total rainfall averages about 89 mm a year, so the weather almost never cancels a session; heat does. From May to September, keep strength work in an air-conditioned room and save the Corniche for the cooler half of the year.
Where can you run or cycle in Abu Dhabi, and how far is each route?
Abu Dhabi’s main routes are the Corniche on the main island, Al Hudayriyat Island, Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island and the long Al Wathba track inland. The distances below come from Dubizzle’s and Property Finder’s Abu Dhabi track guides, Wikipedia for the circuit lap, and the circuit’s own TrainYAS page.
| Route | Distance | Hours | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corniche, Al Khalidiyah | 8 km track, separate lanes for bikes and walkers | 24 hours | Flat runs by the sea, bike hire from AED 30 an hour |
| Al Hudayriyat Island | 5 to 10 km routes, 10 km along the beach | 5 AM to midnight daily | Early runs and rides with sea views |
| Yas Marina Circuit (TrainYAS) | 5.281 km Formula 1 lap | Set sessions, registration required | Free laps on a closed track |
| Al Wathba Cycle Track | 30 km, with 8, 16, 20 and 22 km options | 24 hours | Long rides, about 42 km from downtown |
The Corniche
The Corniche is the run most Abu Dhabi residents start with. Wikipedia puts the waterfront at about 10 km; the track along Corniche Beach is 8 km, with separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, according to Dubizzle. Bikes cost AED 30 an hour for adults and AED 20 for children, or AED 250 for a 12-hour voucher booklet. If you live in Al Khalidiyah, Al Bateen or the downtown towers, it is on your doorstep.
Al Hudayriyat Island
Al Hudayriyat Island has cycling and running routes of 5 to 10 km, Property Finder says, and Dubizzle lists a 10 km beach track open from 5 AM to midnight every day. It is quieter than the Corniche at dawn, which makes it a good place for intervals.
Al Wathba Cycle Track
Al Wathba is for long rides. The track is 30 km long, split into 8 and 16 km routes for beginners and 20, 22 and 30 km routes for experienced riders, and it is open 24 hours. It sits about 42 km from downtown Abu Dhabi, Property Finder says, and bike hire starts at AED 30. The rental shop opens at 6:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
How does TrainYAS work at Yas Marina Circuit?
TrainYAS lets anyone walk, run or cycle on the Yas Marina Circuit Formula 1 track for free, as long as they register first. The circuit has been on Yas Island since 2009, and its Grand Prix lap has been 5.281 km since the 2021 redesign. Five laps is a 26 km ride or a long run with no traffic lights.
- Entry is free, and registration on the circuit’s website is required. Children under 13 must be with an adult.
- TrainYAS Ladies is a women-only session. Property Finder’s January 2025 guide gives it as Tuesdays from 6 PM to 9 PM.
- TrainAM is the morning session, for cycling only. You bring your own bike, because none are provided.
- Public evenings are on Mondays and Wednesdays, by Property Finder’s guide. Runners go clockwise and cyclists anticlockwise.
- Kit: cyclists must wear shoes and sportswear. The circuit publishes its current timetable as a calendar, so check it before you drive out.

| Distance | Entry fee | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 42.195 km | AED 382 | Runners who already cover 30 km or more a week |
| 42.195 km, team of two | AED 592 | Two runners sharing the marathon |
| 10 km | AED 172 | A realistic six-week goal for a regular runner |
| 5 km | AED 90 | A first race, or a fast 5K target |
| 2.5 km | AED 65 | Children and families |
- 1
Weeks 1–2: build the base
Three easy runs a week on the Corniche or Hudayriyat at dawn, plus two coached strength sessions indoors for legs, hips and core.
- 2
Weeks 3–4: add one longer run
Make one run 20–30% longer each week. A Saturday-morning loop of Hudayriyat or the Corniche works well, since the weekend is free for most office workers.
- 3
Week 5: hold steady
Keep the distance, add a few faster minutes in one run, and keep the two strength sessions short and sharp.
- 4
Week 6: taper
Cut your running by about a third, keep one light strength session early in the week, and sleep more.
How does the Abu Dhabi work week change when you can train?
The UAE federal government works 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM from Monday to Thursday and 7:30 AM to noon on Friday, with Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, the government portal u.ae says. It adds that Abu Dhabi’s government has adopted a similar week. Private companies set their own hours, but many follow the same pattern.
- Weekday mornings: a 5–6 AM session before the drive from Yas, Saadiyat or Khalifa City to the main island.
- Weekday afternoons: home by about 4:15 PM after a 3:30 PM finish, which leaves room for a 4:30 PM session before dinner.
- Friday: offices close at noon, so a 1 PM or 2 PM session fits after midday prayers and lunch.
- Saturday and Sunday: the time for long outdoor runs or rides in winter, and for a longer session in your tower gym in summer.
Our session window runs from 4:30 AM to 6:30 PM UAE time, every day, because our coaches are based in India and the UAE has no clock changes. Every slot in the list above sits inside it.
Where do people in Abu Dhabi train when it’s 42°C?
In an Abu Dhabi summer, most people train in mall gyms, tower gyms or at home. GymNation’s three Abu Dhabi branches, at Khalidiyah Mall, Mushrif Mall and Al Reem Island, are open 24 hours a day, and each has a separate ladies’ facility with its own entrance and female coaches. Warehouse Gym’s Sheikha Fatima Park club in Al Bateen opens from 5 AM to 11 PM.
Many towers on Al Reem Island, Al Raha Beach and Al Maryah Island include a residents’ gym. It tends to be quietest early in the morning and in the mid-afternoon. A building gym with a bench, a cable machine and dumbbells is enough for a full programme. What it lacks is someone deciding what you do and checking how you do it.
- 1
Set the phone up once
Find a spot where the camera sees you head to toe from about two metres. A water bottle against the wall or a small tripod is enough.
- 2
Show your coach the kit
In the first session, walk the phone round the gym so your coach sees the heaviest dumbbell, the bench and the cable stack.
- 3
Book the quiet hours
Tower gyms are emptiest early in the morning and in the mid-afternoon, which matches a 5:30 AM or 3 PM slot.
How do you keep training through Ramadan in Abu Dhabi?
In Ramadan, keep training but train lighter. UAE labour law cuts working hours by two hours a day, the u.ae Ramadan page says, which frees part of the afternoon. The same page advises not to exert yourself physically while fasting and to keep activity moderate, and to drink enough water at night.
- Before iftar: a 30–40 minute mobility, core or light strength session late in the afternoon, so you eat soon after you finish.
- After suhoor: a fuller session at 5 AM, if you wake for suhoor anyway and feel strong.
- Skip the heat: when Ramadan falls in a warm month, keep every fasted session indoors.
- Move sessions freely: you can change any booking with 24 hours’ notice as the month’s rhythm shifts.
Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year and starts on the official moon-sighting announcement, so check u.ae for the dates rather than relying on a calendar printed months ahead.
Outdoors, a gym or coached at home: what suits your Abu Dhabi life?
- The Corniche, Hudayriyat and TrainYAS suit you from November to March, if you like running or cycling and can get there at dawn or on a weekend. They cost nothing, apart from bike hire.
- A 24-hour gym suits shift workers and anyone who wants to train at midnight in August. GymNation’s Abu Dhabi branches cost AED 209 a month for one gym.
- MakeMyFitness suits you if you want each session planned and watched, at home or in your tower gym, between 4:30 AM and 6:30 PM. MakeMyFitness offers live 45-minute online personal training in Abu Dhabi from AED 92 a session. It doesn’t suit you if you want someone in the room to spot heavy lifts.
