Expect to pay about £24 to £30 an hour for one-to-one personal training in Liverpool, going by the one public price list we could find in the city. It belongs to Active Liverpool, the University of Liverpool’s sport and fitness centre on Bedford Street North: £30 for a single hour, £85 for three and £122 for five. Each package includes a written programme and what the centre calls a full-body MOT, covering blood pressure, body fat, waist-to-hip ratio, lung function and a fitness test.

The rest of Merseyside’s gyms are quieter about money. PureGym and The Gym Group both list personal trainers at their Liverpool branches without a price. David Lloyd’s Speke club says personal training is “available at an additional cost”. So the published Active Liverpool rates are the most useful yardstick for a Liverpool trainer quote, and we looked at every price below on 28 October 2026.

Published one-to-one training prices for Liverpool, per session (checked 28 October 2026)

One thing to notice: Active Liverpool’s sessions are an hour and ours are 45 minutes. Per minute of coaching, a single Active Liverpool hour works out at 50p, its five-pack at about 41p, a single MakeMyFitness session at about 42p and our 12-session plan at about 31p. So a five-pack at the university is roughly level with one of our single sessions, and the plan is where the saving shows.

Why do so few Liverpool gyms publish personal training prices?

Compare the cost and what each option includes.
Compare the cost and what each option includes.

Most Liverpool gym trainers set their own prices because they are self-employed, not staff. Fitness First, which has no Liverpool club but follows the same model as much of the industry, says so on its personal training page: the people coaching on its floors work for themselves, and the deal is struck with them rather than with the club. It quotes from £30 a session nationally and wants Level 3 as a minimum. In practice that means the trainer you meet on the gym floor at PureGym Liverpool Central or The Gym Group on Strand Street sets the rate, the block discount and the cancellation rules.

That isn’t a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to ask for the price in writing, ask what a block of five or ten costs, and ask what happens to sessions you don’t use. If the answer is close to the £30 an hour Active Liverpool charges, twelve sessions in a month come to about £360.

How much is a gym membership in Liverpool, branch by branch?

Gym access and personal coaching are separate parts of the budget.
Gym access and personal coaching are separate parts of the budget.

A budget gym membership in Liverpool costs £14.99 to £34.99 a month, and, unlike London, the city-centre branch is the cheapest. PureGym has four gyms in and around Liverpool, and on 28 October 2026 its Liverpool Central branch in the Lewis’s Building charged £6 a month less for Core than its retail-park gym on Edge Lane. The cheapest tier, Off-Peak, restricts when you can go in; Core lets you in at any hour; Plus throws in other branches and up to four guest visits a month.

The Plus column shows the standard monthly price; each branch was offering a lower first month of Plus, from £20.99 at Liverpool Central to £26.99 at Edge Lane. All four pages also advertise a £0 joining fee with a promotional code at “selected gyms only”, without saying which, so check at the till.

The Gym Group runs Liverpool gyms on Strand Street, by Liverpool ONE, and on Great Homer Street in Everton, both open 24 hours. At Liverpool One, Off-peak starts at £15.99 a month and Ultimate rolls at £25.99 after a £19.99 first month, plus £10 to join; a 12-month saver is £279 upfront, or £23.25 a month. Great Homer Street’s Ultimate rolls at £27.99, with a 12-month saver at £299.

Liverpool City Council runs 12 leisure centres under the Lifestyles name, from Lifestyles Garston and Lifestyles Walton to Wavertree Athletics Centre and the Liverpool Aquatics Centre. Its pay-as-you-go price list puts an adult gym session at £7.60 and a gym induction at £9.20, with a £3.80 concession rate. Twelve pay-as-you-go visits would cost £91.20, so if you train three times a week, a monthly membership almost anywhere in the city is cheaper.

Gym plus coach: what twelve sessions add up to in Liverpool

Coaching is only half the bill in Liverpool; the other half is the gym you train in. Below are six real combinations for 12 sessions over four weeks, priced from the figures above. Joining fees are left out; they are £10 at most of the branches we checked and £14.99 at Edge Lane.

The gym is the small number here. Moving from Edge Lane to Liverpool Central Off-Peak saves £12 a month. Moving the coaching from £30 an hour in person to a live video plan saves £193, which would pay for nearly 13 months of Off-Peak at Liverpool Central.

What should I ask a Liverpool trainer before I pay for a block?

Discuss your goals, qualifications and session details before choosing a coach.
Discuss your goals, qualifications and session details before choosing a coach.

There is no register a Liverpool trainer has to join before calling themselves one, so the checks are down to you. These six questions work for any trainer in the city, us included.

  1. 1

How many minutes of coaching do I get?

Active Liverpool sells an hour; ours is 45 minutes; a gym-floor trainer might sell 30 or 45. Divide the price by the minutes, as we did above, before comparing.

  2. 2

What is included besides the session?

Active Liverpool’s packages include a programme and a health check with blood pressure and body fat. Ask what a trainer gives you between sessions: a plan, food advice, or nothing.

  3. 3

Who certified you, and for what?

Fitness First, for one, insists on Level 3. Get the name of the qualification and the awarding body, and check it stretches to your situation, say a bad back or the months after having a baby.

  4. 4

Do I need a membership on top?

A trainer at PureGym needs you to be a PureGym member. Add £14.99 to £26.99 a month on Core or Off-Peak, depending on the branch.

  5. 5

What happens when I can’t make it?

Self-employed trainers set their own cancellation terms. Ask how much notice you need, and whether a missed session is lost. We need 24 hours’ notice to move one.

  6. 6

    Do unused sessions expire?

Blocks of five or ten often have a deadline. Ask for it in writing before paying £122 or more up front.

Is a £19 online session good value next to Liverpool prices?

A coach joins live on video and guides each movement.
A coach joins live on video and guides each movement.

Yes, for anyone in Liverpool whose free hours fall in the morning or just after lunch. Here is what the £19 buys: a coach on a live video call who sees you, talks you through each set and corrects the movement as it happens, whether you are in a front room in Old Swan, a block’s residents’ gym or PureGym on Ranelagh Street. No recordings, no studio, nobody knocking on your door. The coaching team works from India, so Liverpool bookings run 6 AM to 2:30 PM UK time through the winter, and to 3:30 PM after the clocks go forward.

MakeMyFitness prices in the UK, charged in GBP. Every session is live on video, and a 4-week plan is three sessions a week.

Against Liverpool’s published prices, a £19 session for 45 minutes is £11 less than a single Active Liverpool hour, and a 4-week plan of 12 sessions at £167 is £137 less than twelve university hours bought in packs. You pay in pounds with a UK card, and a day’s notice moves any session.

The catch is distance. Nobody on a screen can grab a stuck bench press, so leave true maximum attempts for a session with a partner beside you. Almost everything else, from squat depth to how your knees track on a lunge, is clear on a phone camera propped on a bench.

Kumar Abhishek leads the coaching. K11 School of Fitness Sciences awarded him a Diploma in Personal Training and his Human Performance Nutritionist qualification, and he is certified in TRX Suspension Training. None of that is a UK Level 3, and Liverpool clients who ask get that answer straight.

  • You are a student or staff member near the university: Active Liverpool’s five-pack at £122 is a fair price for an in-person hour, and the buddy five-pack at £193 is £19.30 each if you train with a friend.
  • You have a PureGym or Gym Group card in your wallet: stay where you are and bring a coach along on the phone with Personal Gym Training, £19 a session.
  • You would rather train at home in Allerton, Old Swan or the city centre: Personal Home Training at £21 a session needs no gym and no bus.
  • You are coming back from an injury: see your GP or physio first. Once they have cleared you, Rehab & Recovery is £31 a session of exercise coaching; it is not physiotherapy.
  • You want company at a lower price: Group Classes are a small live class at £12 per person, or £96 for 12.
  • Your only free time is after 5 PM: look elsewhere. Our last Liverpool slot is 2:30 PM in winter, 3:30 PM in summer, so evening trainees need someone local in person.
  • You are chasing a one-rep max on the bench: a spotter has to be in the room, so book a gym-floor trainer for those days.
