How much should a personal trainer cost in Edinburgh this year?
Personal training in Edinburgh mostly sits between £40 and £65 a session, with boutique studios charging up to £80. The clearest city breakdown we found is a June 2025 cost guide by Bruce Millar, a personal trainer based in the Scottish Borders, which puts the typical Edinburgh range at £45–£65 a session. We checked it, and every other price on this page, on 28 October 2026.
Edinburgh has no city-wide price index for trainers. The two marketplaces that publish averages for English cities either wouldn’t load for us or listed only one Edinburgh trainer with a price, so this guide leans on what Edinburgh trainers and gyms publish themselves, and says where a figure comes from.
| Type of training | Edinburgh price | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 with a trainer on a gym floor | £40–£55 an hour | PureGym, Gym Group or similar; you also pay the membership |
| 1:1 in a boutique or private studio | £60–£80 a session | Small studio, kit included, no membership |
| Mobile trainer who comes to you | £45–£60 a session | Home, park or office visits |
| Semi-private (two to four people) | £20–£35 per person | One trainer shared between a small group |
| Hybrid or online coaching | £100–£200 a month | A programme and check-ins, often without live sessions |
Millar’s guide gives one worked example that matters for Edinburgh readers: a Level 3 trainer at PureGym in Edinburgh Park might charge £45 an hour, and a boutique coach £65 a session or £480 a month for three sessions a week. Across Scotland as a whole, his guide puts personal training at £35–£65 a session.
How much do independent trainers in Edinburgh charge?
Independent Edinburgh trainers who print a price tend to sell blocks, with the single session as the most expensive way in. Here are three that publish figures, from Leith to the West End.
Leith: £50 an hour, £40 on a block of eight
Lean Bodies trains clients at Hanuman Muay Thai on Jane Street in Leith, a private space just off Leith Walk rather than a commercial gym floor. Its published prices are £50 for a single 60-minute session, £180 for a block of four (£45 each) and £320 for a block of eight (£40 each). It also sells online coaching at £120 a month on a rolling contract.
Charlotte Square: a private New Town studio
A S Personal Training works from Gym on the Square, a private studio at 18a Charlotte Square in the New Town. Its site doesn’t print its own rates, but its FAQ says the average personal trainer in Edinburgh charges £35 to £80 an hour and recommends sessions of at least 45 minutes.
G2G Coaching: small-group coaching from £139 a month
G2G Coaching sells coached gym membership rather than single sessions: £139 a month for its General plan with no minimum term, or £258 a month for Performance with a four-month minimum, and no joining fee. Its own page puts a typical Edinburgh personal trainer at £40 to £60 a session and up to £80 or more.
| Trainer | Rate | Cost of 12 | Extra costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trainer at the bottom of the typical range | £45 a session | £540 | A gym, if they work in one |
| Trainer at the top of the typical range | £65 a session | £780 | A gym, if they work in one |
| Lean Bodies, Leith (8-block plus 4-block) | £40–£45 a session | £500 | Nothing; studio included |
| Boutique studio at the top of Millar’s range | £80 a session | £960 | Nothing; studio included |
| MakeMyFitness coach on video, in your gym (45 min) | £19 each | £167 as a 4-week plan | Whatever gym you already belong to |
| MakeMyFitness small live group | £12 each per head | £96 a head | None |
Minutes matter as much as pounds here. Lean Bodies sells 60, PureGym says its trainers usually run 45 to 60, and ours last 45. Divide any Edinburgh quote by its length, and ask whether ten of those minutes are a jog on the treadmill you could manage alone.
Do PureGym, The Gym Group or Nuffield publish trainer prices in Edinburgh?
Not one of the chains with Edinburgh branches lists a local trainer rate. Budget-gym trainers are freelancers who agree a fee with you; premium clubs keep prices for members. Here is what each one does put in writing.
- PureGym (six Edinburgh gyms): trainers set their own rates, you pay them directly, and PureGym says a session typically costs £30 to £65 for 45 to 60 minutes across the UK. Its Fort Kinnaird gym alone listed 16 trainers on 28 October 2026, with no prices on their profiles.
- The Gym Group (five Edinburgh gyms, including Edinburgh City at Waverley Gate): each trainer “is freelance and sets their own rates”, and new members can get one free PT taster session at their home gym, though not every gym offers it.
- Nuffield Health Edinburgh Omni (Leith Street): personal training is for members only, in 30 or 60-minute sessions, sold in packs of 1, 4, 8 or 12 hours that are valid for 90 days. Its trainers are registered with CIMSPA. The page gives no actual pack price for Edinburgh.
- David Lloyd Edinburgh Shawfair (Danderhall): personal training is “available at an additional cost”, with no figure on the club page. The club has a 20 m indoor pool, a 25 m outdoor pool and three indoor tennis courts.
Gym membership prices in Edinburgh, from Gorgie to Fort Kinnaird
Edinburgh gym fees vary less than London’s but still differ by neighbourhood. PureGym runs six gyms in the city, and the gap between its cheapest and dearest Core price is £6 a month. These are the regular monthly prices on each branch page on 28 October 2026; several were running a cheaper first month.
| Branch and area | Off-Peak | Core | Plus | To join |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh West, Gorgie Road | £20.99 | £25.99 | £31.99 | £0 on the current offer |
| Ocean Terminal, Leith | Not listed | £27.99 | £35.99 | £15 |
| Craigleith Retail Park | £23.99 | £29.99 | £37.99 | £15 |
| Exchange Crescent, West End | Not listed | £29.99 | £38.99 | £15 |
| Fort Kinnaird | £25.99 | £31.99 | £39.99 | £15 |
| Quartermile, Lauriston Place | £26.99 | £31.99 | £39.99 | £20 |
The Gym Group’s Edinburgh City gym, in the Waverley Gate building on Waterloo Place, charged £20.99 a month for Off-peak and from £26.99 for Standard, with a £15 joining fee, and is open 24 hours. Its 12-month Ultimate saver was £369 paid up front. At the other end, Nuffield Health’s Edinburgh Omni gym charged £76 a month off-peak and £89 anytime on a 12-month commitment, with a pool, sauna, steam room and classes included and no joining fee.
Gym plus coach: five Edinburgh monthly bills compared
Your real Edinburgh bill is coaching added to a gym fee. Each line below prices 12 sessions over four weeks from the rates quoted earlier, with joining fees left out.
| Combination | Gym fee | Coach | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gym Group Edinburgh City Standard and a trainer at £50 an hour | £26.99 | £600 | £626.99 |
| No gym: Lean Bodies blocks in Leith | £0 | £500 | £500 |
| Nuffield Health Omni Anytime, coached by MakeMyFitness on video | £89 | £167 | £256 |
| PureGym Edinburgh West Off-Peak, coached by MakeMyFitness on video | £20.99 | £167 | £187.99 |
| Home workouts only, coached by MakeMyFitness | None | £191 | £191 |
The gym is the smaller line. Moving from Quartermile Core to Gorgie Off-Peak cuts £11 a month; replacing a £50-an-hour trainer with coaching on video cuts over £400.
Six questions for an Edinburgh trainer before you buy a block
No law in Scotland stops anyone using the title personal trainer, so vetting falls to you. Put these to anybody you consider in Edinburgh, including us.
- 1
Which qualification, and is it on a register?
Nuffield Health says its trainers are registered with CIMSPA, the UK body for sport and physical activity workers. Bruce Millar’s Edinburgh example is a Level 3 trainer. Ask for the certificate and whether it extends to your situation, pregnancy or a dodgy knee for instance.
- 2
How long is a session, really?
Nuffield sells 30 and 60-minute sessions, Lean Bodies sells 60, and PureGym quotes 45 to 60. Price per minute is the fair comparison.
- 3
When does the block expire?
Nuffield’s packs are valid for 90 days. A block of eight that has to be used in eight weeks is a different deal from one that waits for you over the Fringe or Christmas.
- 4
Who is the contract with?
At PureGym and The Gym Group you pay the trainer, not the gym. Get the cancellation rules in writing before you buy.
- 5
What does it cost to get there?
A trainer at Fort Kinnaird is an easy drive from Portobello and a long bus ride from Corstorphine. Add the travel time to the price.
- 6
What happens in the first session?
Expect questions, a movement check and a plan, not an exhausting workout. We start the same way.
Is online personal training worth it in Edinburgh?
For most Edinburgh budgets, yes, as long as daytime suits you. With MakeMyFitness, a qualified coach joins a video call, sees each rep and adjusts your technique in real time, whether you’re in a Stockbridge flat, your gym in Leith or Gorgie, or a hotel on a work trip. Nothing is recorded in advance, and we run no studios or home visits. Our coaches work from India, which is why Edinburgh bookings fall between 6 AM and 2:30 PM, stretching to 3:30 PM from late March to late October.
| Program | One session | 4-week plan (12 sessions) | Per session on the plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Gym Training1:1, 45 minutes | £19 | £167 | about £14 |
| Personal Home Training1:1, 45 minutes | £21 | £191 | about £16 |
| Rehab & Recovery1:1, once a doctor or physio has cleared you | £31 | £287 | about £24 |
| Group ClassesPer person, small group | £12 | £96 | about £8 |
Set against Edinburgh rates, £19 for 45 minutes is less than half of £45, the floor of Millar’s usual range, and less than half of Lean Bodies’ £40 block price. Three sessions weekly for four weeks costs £167, billed in sterling to a UK card, and a day’s warning lets you shift any booking.
The trade-off is physical presence. Nobody on a screen can catch a failed bench rep or strip plates for you, so save true one-rep maxes for a session with a gym buddy. Knee tracking, squat depth and a rounding spine on deadlifts all show up clearly through a phone camera.
Kumar Abhishek leads our coaching. K11 School of Fitness Sciences awarded him a Diploma in Personal Training and a Human Performance Nutritionist qualification, and he is certified in TRX Suspension Training. Neither he nor we hold a UK Level 3 award or CIMSPA registration, and Edinburgh clients hear that before paying.
Who should pick which Edinburgh option, including when not to pick us
- Pool, sauna and classes matter to you: Nuffield Health Omni on Leith Street at £89 a month anytime, adding its own trainers, or David Lloyd Shawfair if you have a car.
- A budget membership is already in your wallet: stay on PureGym or Gym Group off-peak from £20.99 and bring in Personal Gym Training, £19 per session.
- Crossing the city to train is the deal-breaker: Personal Home Training brings the coach to your living room for £21.
- An old injury is flaring: your GP or physio comes first. After they sign you off, Rehab & Recovery offers coached exercise at £31; it does not replace physiotherapy.
- Training alone bores you: Group Classes put a few people with one live coach, £12 each or £96 for 12.
- Evenings are your only free time: look elsewhere. Our last Edinburgh slot is 2:30 PM in winter and 3:30 PM in summer, so a local in-person trainer fits after-work hours.
- Heavy lifting needs a spotter: book someone on your gym floor; a phone can’t catch a bar.
