Personal training in Cardiff usually costs £40 to £45 for an hour with an independent trainer. Fresha, the booking platform many Cardiff trainers take appointments through, says it costs around £45 on average to get started in the city, and the hourly sessions it listed on 28 October 2026 were priced at £40 and £45. Its full Cardiff range is much wider, from £10 to £100 a session, because the cheapest entries are add-ons such as a written programme rather than a coached hour.

Gym-floor trainers are the other half of the market. PureGym, which runs four gyms inside the city boundary, tells members that a session outside London typically costs £30 to £65 for 45 to 60 minutes, and that each trainer sets their own rate. None of Cardiff’s big chains prints a single in-house price, so the table below uses what each one does publish.

What a coached session costs in Cardiff, and what 12 of them come to (prices checked 28 October 2026)

Session length is the catch in every row. Fresha’s listings are mostly an hour, PureGym quotes anything from 45 to 60 minutes, and ours are 45. When a Cardiff trainer gives you a price, ask how long the session runs and whether the warm-up is on your time or theirs.

What do Cardiff’s gyms and clubs charge for a trainer?

Gym access and personal coaching are separate parts of the budget.
Gym access and personal coaching are separate parts of the budget.

At Cardiff’s budget gyms the trainer you meet on the floor sets their own price, in PureGym’s own words. That is good for negotiating a block of sessions and bad for comparing like with like. Here is what each operator in the city actually publishes.

PureGym: £30 to £65 a session, set by the trainer

PureGym says personal training is not included in membership, that trainers set their own rates, and that some offer cheaper online coaching or a discount for paying up front. Its Cardiff Central gym, on Wood Street opposite the Principality Stadium, listed ten trainers on 28 October 2026, with specialisms from strength and conditioning to injury prevention. No prices appear on the trainer profiles: you message the trainer and ask. PureGym also notes that qualifications vary and are shown on each profile, so read them before you book.

The Gym Group: trainers on the floor, no published rate

The Gym Group has two Cardiff sites, one inside the Capitol Shopping Centre on Queen Street and one at Avenue Retail Park on Newport Road. Both branch pages say personal trainers are available, and neither lists a price. Expect quotes in the same £30 to £65 band PureGym describes, and ask for the block rate.

Nuffield Health: £23 at the nearest Welsh clubs

Nuffield Health publishes a table of discounted personal training rates for people on its employee-benefits scheme. No Cardiff club appears on it. The two nearest Welsh clubs on the list, Bridgend and Cwmbran, are both £23 a session with a standard trainer and £25.50 with a senior trainer. If your employer offers Nuffield through a benefits scheme and you drive out of the city to train, that is a fair price; you still pay a Nuffield membership on top.

David Lloyd Cardiff: ask at the desk

David Lloyd’s Cardiff club, on Ipswich Road in Roath, is the city’s big family club, with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis and padel courts, a spa and a crèche. Its page says personal training costs extra but prints neither the training price nor the membership; both come from the club. If you want a trainer and a pool under one roof, this is the place to phone.

Independent Cardiff trainers work out of small studios, boxing gyms and their own units around the city. Fresha’s Cardiff page lists names on Penarth Road, in Leckwith, on Ocean Way in Splott, in Pengam and on Cowbridge Road East, as well as in the centre. These are the trainers on that page who showed a price on 28 October 2026.

Two patterns stand out. Short sessions cost more per minute: half an hour at £30 is a £60 hourly rate. And bundles are where the savings are, so the four-session offer on Queen Street works out at £25 an hour. Ellis Frangos Performance also lists a free one-hour first call, the kind of offer worth taking before you commit.

What should you ask a Cardiff personal trainer before paying for a block?

Discuss your goals, qualifications and session details before choosing a coach.
Discuss your goals, qualifications and session details before choosing a coach.

Anyone in Cardiff can call themselves a personal trainer, and there is no register to look them up on. PureGym puts each trainer’s qualifications on their profile; elsewhere you ask. These questions work for any trainer, ourselves included.

  1. 1

    Which qualification, from where?

Ask for the name of the course and the body that awarded it. If you are pregnant, coming back from injury or training for something specific, ask whether that is covered.

  2. 2

How many minutes is a session?

A £30 half-hour and a £45 hour are not the same purchase. Get the length in writing.

  3. 3

Who do I pay, and what if I cancel?

At PureGym and The Gym Group you contract with the trainer, not the gym. Ask how much notice you need and whether a missed session is lost.

  4. 4

    Is there a block price?

On Fresha’s Cardiff page a four-session bundle brought the hourly rate down from £40 to £25. Always ask.

  5. 5

What happens in the first meeting?

A sensible start is a conversation and a movement check, not a punishing workout. One Cardiff studio on Fresha offers a free first call; we start with a consultation too.

Is a £19 online session worth it next to a Cardiff trainer?

A coach joins live on video and guides each movement.
A coach joins live on video and guides each movement.

For most Cardiff budgets, yes. MakeMyFitness is live online personal training: a coach joins you on a video call, watches you move and corrects your form in real time, whether you are in a Grangetown terrace, a Cardiff Bay flat, the PureGym on Wood Street or a hotel room on a work trip. Nothing is pre-recorded, and there are no studios or home visits. Our coaches are based in India, which is why Cardiff sessions run from 6 AM to 2:30 PM UK time in winter and until 3:30 PM in British Summer Time.

MakeMyFitness prices in the UK, charged in GBP. Every session is live on video, and a 4-week plan is three sessions a week.

Next to Cardiff’s published prices, £19 for 45 minutes is well under half of Fresha’s £45 average and below the £23 Nuffield benefit rate. The 4-week plan is 12 sessions, three a week, for £167, charged in pounds to a UK card. Sessions move with 24 hours’ notice, which helps when a match weekend or a work trip rearranges your week.

Be clear about the limit. A coach on a screen can’t spot a heavy bench press or catch a failed squat, so save maximal lifts for days with a training partner. For the rest, from how deep you sit to whether your knees track over your toes on a lunge, a phone propped on a bench gives your coach a clear view.

Our lead coach is Kumar Abhishek. He holds a Diploma in Personal Training and is a Human Performance Nutritionist, both from K11 School of Fitness Sciences, and is TRX Suspension Training certified. We hold no UK awards such as Level 3, and we would rather you heard that from us first.

  • You want a pool, courts and a trainer in one place: call David Lloyd on Ipswich Road; it doesn’t publish prices online.
  • You already pay £19.99 to £29.99 for a Cardiff PureGym: keep it and add Personal Gym Training at £19 a session.
  • You train at home and hate the drive to Cardiff Gate or Western Avenue: Personal Home Training is £21 a session in your own front room.
  • You are recovering from an injury: see your GP or physio first. Once they have cleared you, Rehab & Recovery is £31 a session of exercise coaching, not physiotherapy.
  • You are a student in Cathays on a tight budget: Group Classes are £12 a person, or £96 for 12.
  • You can only train after work, at 5 or 6 in the evening: we can’t coach you then; an in-person Cardiff trainer at £40 to £45 an hour is the better fit.
  • You want hands-on spotting for heavy lifts: book an in-person trainer for those sessions.
