Bristol personal trainers mostly set their own prices and few publish them, so the most useful anchor is a public institution. University of Bristol Sport lists a single one-hour personal training session at £36.75, for one person or two training together. We checked that page on 28 October 2026, along with every other price in this guide.

The city’s big gyms are quieter about it. PureGym’s Bristol branch pages say personal trainers are available for one-to-one work but print no fee. The Gym Group says its Bristol trainers are on hand without a price. Nuffield Health links to a page where you buy personal training, and David Lloyd in Westbury-on-Trym says only that it costs extra. In practice, a Bristol trainer quotes you in person, so the £36.75 university rate is a fair yardstick to test those quotes against.

If you train three times a week, think in blocks of 12. At the University of Bristol rate, 12 one-hour sessions come to £441. That is before any membership, and before the bus from Bedminster or the drive from Fishponds to get there.

What does a gym membership cost in Bristol?

Gym access and personal coaching are separate parts of the budget.
Gym access and personal coaching are separate parts of the budget.

Bristol gym membership splits cleanly into two price bands. Budget chains charge about £19 to £36 a month with no contract; the full-service clubs in Clifton and on the north fringe charge £71 to £104 a month on a 12-month commitment. PureGym has five gyms with Bristol in their name, and its prices barely move between them, except at Abbey Wood Retail Park near Filton.

PureGym monthly prices at four Bristol branches (checked 28 October 2026)

PureGym was showing Plus at £25.99 for the first month at the central branches when we looked, and £28.99 at Abbey Wood. All four gyms are open 24 hours a day. The joining fee is the part that changes most: £9.99 at Union Gate against £20 at Abbey Wood, for much the same gym floor.

The Gym Group: £18.99 a month at three Bristol sites

The Gym Group’s Bristol page lists three gyms: Bristol City Centre, tucked behind Quakers Friars near Castle Park; Longwell Green, just off the A4174 ring road; and Avonmeads. Membership starts at £18.99 a month with no contract, and the first payment is £28.99 because it includes a one-off £10 joining fee. The page says its Bristol gyms are open 24 hours, with a footnote that 24-hour access isn’t available everywhere, so check your branch.

University of Bristol Sport: public members welcome

The University of Bristol sells gym memberships to the public, not just to students and staff. Its Community Exercise membership is £27 a month or £230.50 a year. Active Choice is £32 a month for off-peak gym, classes or swimming, and £40.50 for anytime gym. Active Complete is £49.50 a month. Direct debit memberships run for at least two months, and the joining fee equals one monthly payment. Off-peak here means weekdays until 3:30 PM and all weekend.

Nuffield Health and David Lloyd: the full-service end

Nuffield Health’s Bristol Fitness & Wellbeing Gym on Queens Road in Clifton charges £104 a month for anytime access or £88 off-peak, both on a 12-month commitment, or £98 a month on a one-month rolling plan, with no joining fee. Its Bristol North club on Hunts Ground Road in Stoke Gifford was listing anytime access at £71 a month, reduced from £89, and off-peak at £76, limited to 11 AM to 4 PM on weekdays. David Lloyd’s Westbury-on-Trym club has a 25-metre indoor pool and a 20-metre heated outdoor pool, and asks you to enquire for prices.

What does a month of coached training cost in Bristol, all in?

The honest monthly figure for personal training in Bristol is coaching plus somewhere to train. Here are five set-ups priced from the published figures above, each with 12 coached sessions in four weeks. We used the University of Bristol’s £36.75 as the in-person rate, because no gym chain in the city prints one.

Joining fees are left out: they would add £9.99 to £20 at PureGym and £10 at The Gym Group in the first month. The gap that matters is in the coaching column. Twelve in-person hours at the university rate cost £441; twelve live sessions on video with us cost £167.

Is online personal training worth it in Bristol?

A coach joins live on video and guides each movement.
A coach joins live on video and guides each movement.

Online personal training is worth it in Bristol if what you need is coaching, not a person in the room. MakeMyFitness runs every session as a live video call: your coach watches you move and corrects your form as it happens, in your flat in Southville, your building gym at Harbourside or your own PureGym. Nothing is pre-recorded, and there are no studios or home visits.

MakeMyFitness prices in the UK, charged in GBP. Every session is live on video, and a 4-week plan is three sessions a week.

Against Bristol’s published prices, a 45-minute session at £19 is just over half the University of Bristol’s hourly rate. The 4-week plan is 12 sessions, three a week, for £167, charged in pounds on a UK card. You can move any session with 24 hours’ notice, which matters when the M32 is jammed or a nursery calls at 9 AM.

Our coaches are based in India, so our Bristol sessions run from 6 AM to 2:30 PM UK time all year, and until 3:30 PM in British Summer Time. There are no evening slots. The people who get most from us in Bristol are early risers, home workers in Redland and Bishopston, shift workers at Southmead or the BRI, and parents with a free hour after the school run.

What a video coach can’t do is take the bar off you. If your plan involves heavy bench presses to failure, keep those for a day with a training partner, or hire someone in person for them. Squat depth, knee tracking, a rounded back on a deadlift and a rushed tempo are all easy to see on a phone propped on a bench.

What should you ask a Bristol personal trainer before you pay?

Discuss your goals, qualifications and session details before choosing a coach.

Because Bristol’s trainers quote in person, the questions you ask decide what you get for your money. These apply to any trainer in the city, including us.

  1. 1

Get the price for a block, not one session

Ask what 12 sessions cost and how long the block lasts before unused sessions expire. A single-session rate is rarely what regular clients pay.

  2. 2

Ask how long a session really is

University of Bristol Sport sells a full hour. Our sessions are 45 minutes. Compare the minutes of coaching, not just the label.

  3. 3

    Check the qualification

Ask which qualification the trainer holds, who awarded it and whether it covers what you need, such as training in pregnancy or after surgery. Our qualifications are from India, and we say so up front.

  4. 4

Know who you are contracting with

At most chains the trainer sets the price and the terms. Get the cancellation rule in writing before you hand over money for a block.

  5. 5

Add the membership and the journey

A trainer at a Clifton club means a Nuffield-level membership. A trainer at Abbey Wood means a drive to the north fringe. Put both into the monthly sum.

  6. 6

Ask what happens in the first session

It should be questions about your goals, injuries and week, and a check of how you move. If it is a punishing circuit, that tells you something.

  • You want a pool, a spa and a trainer on site in Clifton or Westbury-on-Trym: Nuffield Health at £88 to £104 a month or David Lloyd suits you, with personal training charged on top.
  • You study or work near the university, or want an hourly trainer with a published price: University of Bristol Sport at £36.75 an hour, with public membership from £27 a month.
  • You train at a budget gym and only in the daytime: keep PureGym Off-Peak at £19.99 to £20.99 and add Personal Gym Training at £19 a session.
  • You won’t leave the house to train: Personal Home Training at £21 a session, in your living room, with no gym fee at all.
  • You are coming back from an injury: get cleared by your GP or physio first. After that, Rehab & Recovery is exercise coaching at £31 a session; it is not physiotherapy.
  • You like training with others and want the lowest price: Group Classes are £12 per person, or £96 for 12.
  • You can only train after work: we are the wrong fit. Our UK sessions finish at 2:30 PM in winter and 3:30 PM in summer, so look for an in-person Bristol trainer for evenings.
  • You want someone spotting heavy lifts: hire a trainer at your gym; a coach on video can’t catch the bar.
