Houston eats out more than almost anywhere in the country. USA Today called it “the people's dining-out capital” of the United States in 1998, and that year Houstonians ate out more often than residents of any other American city. The menu is wide. Tex-Mex is everywhere, and the original Ninfa's in the Second Ward is known for tacos al carbón and fajitas. Chinatown and Little Saigon serve Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean food. The Mahatma Gandhi District is the city's Indian and Pakistani enclave, and the Bissonnet area adds Nigerian, Ethiopian and Filipino cooking.

Two Houston habits matter most for a calorie budget. The first is breakfast in a tortilla or a pastry: the breakfast taco and the kolache are what a lot of Houston eats in the car on the way to work. The second is the shared Tex-Mex plate, where chips, queso, rice and beans can add more calories than the fajitas themselves. This guide puts published numbers on both, using the nutrition charts published by two chains you'll find all over Houston: Taco Cabana's 2025 nutritional guide and Shipley Do-Nuts' nutrition sheet.

A single breakfast taco in Houston runs about 190 to 380 calories at Taco Cabana, and protein runs from 4 to 15 grams. The filling decides almost everything. Meat and egg fillings bring the protein, while potato and bean fillings bring calories with less protein per bite. Here is the chain's own chart for its most-ordered breakfast tacos, each on a flour tortilla.

Breakfast tacos at Taco Cabana, Houston: calories and protein per taco (2025 nutritional guide)

Carne guisada, the slow-stewed beef Houston orders all day, is the standout: 210 calories and 14 grams of protein, as much protein as a steak and egg taco for 40 fewer calories. Two of them make a 420-calorie breakfast with 28 grams of protein. Barbacoa has the most protein per taco at 15 grams, but at 360 calories it costs 150 more than carne guisada for one extra gram. Bean and cheese is the classic budget order and sits near the bottom on protein: 300 calories for 10 grams.

If you want breakfast in one piece, the burritos follow the same rule. Taco Cabana's carne guisada breakfast burrito has 320 calories and 28 grams of protein, and the steak and egg burrito has 410 calories and 26 grams. Both beat two potato and egg tacos (440 calories, 16 grams) on protein by a wide margin.

Kolache or doughnut: which Houston breakfast pastry fits a diet?

In Houston, the kolache you buy at the doughnut shop is usually the savory, sausage-in-dough kind, and it has more protein than any doughnut on the counter. Shipley Do-Nuts publishes a nutrition sheet for every item. The plain sausage kolache has 380 calories and 10 grams of protein. A plain glazed doughnut has 190 calories and 2 grams.

ItemCaloriesProteinSodium
Ham and cheese kolache36013 g832 mg
Sausage kolache (plain)38010 g664 mg
Sausage and cheese kolache44012 g903 mg

Apple fritter3606 g322 mg
Glazed doughnut holes, one dozen7507 g369 mg

The ham and cheese kolache is the leanest choice on the sheet: 360 calories with 13 grams of protein. The jalapeño version costs the same 440 calories as plain sausage and cheese but carries 1,161 mg of sodium, half of the FDA's daily limit of less than 2,300 mg in one pastry. And a dozen glazed holes, the office box on a Friday, is 750 calories with 7 grams of protein. If you're bringing breakfast for the team, a box of ham and cheese kolaches does more for everyone's afternoon than holes.

What you drink with it counts too. A 16-ounce Vitamin D milk at Shipley adds 150 calories and 8 grams of protein, which turns one kolache into a 20-gram breakfast. The bold black cold brew is close to zero. A 16-ounce smoothie runs 450 to 470 calories, more than the kolache.

How do you order fajitas and Tex-Mex in Houston without blowing your calories?

Read the menu information before deciding what to order.

A Tex-Mex meal in Houston usually goes over budget on the sides, not the meat. Fajita meat is mostly protein: Taco Cabana's chicken fajita soft taco has 210 calories and 18 grams of protein, and the chicken fajita meat for its salad has 190 calories and 30 grams. The plate, the chips and the drink are where the total climbs. Here's how one order adds up, using the chain's published figures.

How a Houston Tex-Mex order adds up at Taco Cabana (2025 nutritional guide)

Put those together and the difference is stark. The full plate with refried beans, chips and queso and a margarita comes to 1,890 calories with 67 grams of protein. Two street tacos and black beans give you 400 calories and 39 grams. That's 58 percent of the protein for about a fifth of the calories. You don't have to give up the plate forever; you just need to know it's a 1,000-calorie meal before the chips arrive.

  • Pick fajita chicken or steak over ground beef and shredded fillings. A chicken fajita soft taco has 18 grams of protein; a ground beef soft taco has 13 grams for 60 more calories.
  • Swap refried beans for black beans. On the small side, that's 140 calories saved and you lose only 2 grams of protein.
  • Choose corn over flour when you can. Taco Cabana's table corn tortilla is 50 calories against 120 for a 6-inch flour tortilla.
  • Split the chips. A regular order of chips alone is 680 calories; a small is 340.
  • Watch the sweet tea. A 32-ounce medium sweet tea poured without ice has 280 calories and 73 grams of sugar. Unsweet tea has none.

What about crawfish, barbecue and pho in Houston?

Houston's other signature foods are harder to count because the places that serve them don't publish nutrition charts, and we won't guess at numbers we couldn't open. What we can give you is the ordering logic, which works whatever the exact figure.

  • Viet-Cajun crawfish. Houston's Vietnamese restaurants blend Vietnamese seasoning with Louisiana Cajun boils, a style that got the name “Viet-Cajun” in the early 2010s. The tail meat itself is lean. The garlic butter sauce, the corn, the potatoes and the sausage in the bag are where most of the calories sit, so order the sauce mild and on the side and go easy on the extras.
  • Barbecue. The Houston Chronicle's barbecue writer has counted more than 100 barbecue places inside Beltway 8. Ask for lean brisket over moist, add turkey for protein, and choose pinto beans or a green side over potato salad and white bread. At Taco Cabana, a brisket street taco is 140 calories with 8 grams of protein, while the BBQ-sauced soft version is 250 with 9 grams and 9 grams of sugar.
  • Pho in Little Saigon and Chinatown. A big bowl is mostly broth, noodles and thin-sliced beef. Ask for extra meat and extra bean sprouts and herbs, and leave some of the noodles if you're cutting.
  • Gulf seafood. Houston's “you buy, we fry” fish counters, many run by Vietnamese American families, fry everything by default. Most will grill shrimp or catfish if you ask.

What does a fat-loss day look like on Houston food?

Plan meals across the day using familiar foods.
Plan meals across the day using familiar foods.

A fat-loss day in Houston can be built entirely from drive-through tacos and a kolache and still land near 1,500 calories with more than 100 grams of protein. This one uses only Taco Cabana and Shipley figures from their published charts. Adjust portions to your own target.

MealWhat to orderCaloriesProtein
BreakfastSteak and egg taco plus a carne guisada taco (Taco Cabana)46028 g
LunchHealthy Chicken Fajita Cabana Bowl (Taco Cabana)31029 g

Day total1,530109 g

Two honest caveats. This day carries about 5,080 mg of sodium by the chains' own figures, more than twice the FDA limit, so swap at least one meal for something cooked at home: grilled chicken, rice and a salad you season yourself will bring it down a long way. And a fat-loss day only works if you repeat it most days of the week, alongside training that keeps your muscle while the scale moves.

How do you eat for muscle gain in Houston?

Muscle gain in Houston means eating more of the same high-protein orders, not more chips. This day reaches about 2,960 calories and 178 grams of protein, enough for a lot of lifters training three or four days a week, again using only published chain figures.

If you train in the morning, put the two breakfast burritos after your session. If you train late, the fajita tacos make a solid post-session dinner. The kolache and milk are the easy calories that most hard-gainers skip; in Houston they're at a drive-through window on most commutes.
