Atlanta eats fried chicken in more forms than any other American city might admit to, and most of it isn't eaten sitting down. Chick-fil-A started here: the chain traces its origin to the Dwarf Grill that S. Truett Cathy opened in Hapeville, an Atlanta suburb, on May 23, 1946, and it is still headquartered in College Park. Every Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays, which shapes the city's weekend eating more than people notice.

Then there are the wings. Lemon pepper wings were invented in Atlanta, where people started dusting lemon pepper on wings to tone down the heat, and the sauced “lemon pepper wet” came out of the American Deli. In 2017, future mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms put it plainly: “Lemon pepper wings are Atlanta.” Wings are ordered by the piece count, from wing spots, delis and late-night counters across the city.

The rest of the city's plate comes from two directions. Soul food and the meat-and-three, a protein with three sides like collard greens, mac and cheese and yams, run through Southern home cooking and Sunday after-church lunches. And Buford Highway, the stretch of Georgia State Route 13 between Lenox Road and Jimmy Carter Boulevard through Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville and Norcross, is lined with more than 1,000 immigrant-owned businesses, with Korean, Mexican, Chinese and Vietnamese food the best known. Add the food halls in converted buildings along the BeltLine's Eastside Trail, Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market, and the 24-hour Waffle House that ends many Atlanta nights.

How many calories are in lemon pepper wings?

A plain fried, coated restaurant chicken wing has about 178 calories and 9.8 g of protein, by USDA FoodData Central's entry for a whole 55 g wing. A single drummette, 22 g, has about 71 calories and 3.9 g of protein. USDA lists those wings without sauce, so a dry lemon pepper rub adds little, while a lemon pepper wet order, tossed in a butter-based sauce, adds more than this table shows.

Wings are a real protein source, which is the good news. The catch is the fat: per 100 g, USDA's restaurant wing has 21.3 g of fat against 17.8 g of protein. For an Atlanta wing night that still fits a fat-loss week, order by the piece rather than the platter, pick dry lemon pepper over wet, skip the fries on the side and count six to ten drummettes as a full meal. If you're trying to gain muscle, a 10-piece is a respectable 39 g of protein.

What should I order at Chick-fil-A to eat healthy?

The healthiest Chick-fil-A order in Atlanta puts grilled chicken next to a vegetable or fruit side and an unsweetened drink. Chick-fil-A's own nutrition page, opened on October 28, 2026, lists every item, and the gaps between similar-looking orders are bigger than most people expect.

Two lines in that table surprise people. The Side Salad is listed at 470 calories and 42 g of fat, more than the 420-calorie Waffle Potato Fries, so read the label before assuming a salad is the light choice. And the original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich (420 calories, 29 g protein) is only 30 calories more than the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, so if you love the classic, the fries and the sweet tea are where the calories hide, not the sandwich.

Put together, a classic Atlanta lunch of a Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich, Waffle Potato Fries and a sweetened iced tea comes to 970 calories and 34 g of protein. A Grilled Chicken Sandwich, a Kale Crunch Side and unsweetened tea is 560 calories and 32 g of protein. That's 410 calories a day back, for almost the same protein, at the same drive-through.

A meat-and-three plate in Atlanta can run from about 560 calories to well over 1,000 depending on the sides, using USDA FoodData Central figures for the parts. The fried chicken is the anchor: one coated, fried restaurant chicken breast eaten with the skin and coating (175 g) has about 478 calories and 33.8 g of protein. Collard greens are the friendliest side: a cup cooked with oil (135 g) has about 82 calories and 4.2 g of protein.

What goes on an Atlanta soul food or meat-and-three plate (USDA FoodData Central and Chick-fil-A, October 2026)

Chicken and greens together come to 560 calories and 38 g of protein, a solid dinner. Add a mac and cheese the size of Chick-fil-A's 227 g serving and you're past 1,000. The Atlanta move is to make greens one of your three sides every time, take a second vegetable over a second starch, and drink the city's hometown Coca-Cola from a 140-calorie can rather than a 20-ounce bottle, which Coca-Cola lists at 240 calories. Boiled peanuts, Georgia's roadside snack, are better than chips: an ounce has 90 calories and 3.8 g of protein, though a full cup runs to 464 calories.

Is Buford Highway food good for losing weight?

Buford Highway has some of the lightest high-protein meals in metro Atlanta, if you order soups and grilled meat. Vietnamese pho with meat has about 189 calories and 14.2 g of protein per cup (245 g), by USDA FoodData Central. A restaurant bowl is usually bigger than one cup, so two cups of broth, noodles and beef come to about 378 calories and 28.4 g of protein, before you add hoisin.

  • Pho in Doraville or Chamblee: ask for extra meat and extra bean sprouts and basil, and go easy on the noodles if you're cutting.
  • Korean barbecue: grilled meat is lean protein when you lean on the lettuce wraps and banchan vegetables and pass on refills of rice.
  • Tacos: two or three grilled-meat tacos on corn tortillas with salsa make a lighter plate than a burrito, and carry the same filling.
  • Chinese: steamed dishes and stir-fries with vegetables beat anything battered and glazed; ask for sauce on the side.

Gaining muscle in Atlanta is easier than losing fat, because the food is already generous. This day reaches about 2,890 calories and 167 g of protein, with a soul food dinner and Georgia's own roadside snack in the afternoon.

The Cool Wrap is the quiet hero of both plans: Chick-fil-A lists it at 660 calories with 43 g of protein and 14 g of fiber. If 2,890 calories is more than you need, drop the Mac & Cheese and you're at about 2,440 with 147 g of protein.

Food in Atlanta is social: wing nights, Sunday plates, brunch in Inman Park, a food hall on the BeltLine after a walk. A plan that bans all of it lasts about a week. What works is training consistently and making a few repeatable swaps, like grilled over breaded, greens as a side and unsweetened tea. MakeMyFitness coaches train you live on video, 45 minutes at a time, and our lead coach, Kumar Abhishek, is a qualified Human Performance Nutritionist (K11 School of Fitness Sciences), so your sessions can include a straight talk about the week's eating.
